It's just a phenomenon of a large screen. If I tilt the screen up to far, it looks slightly purple at the top. If I tilt it down, it looks slightly yellow at the bottom. If I look at it absolutely straight on from a distance, it looks (nearly) uniform. The fact that the screen is so large means that it's impossible to look at close up without a perspective shift from one end to the other. If you notice in the threads about yellow tinting. The photographs of the "good" screens are all angled higher (photographed from a lower perspective) than the "bad" screens.

If you get a chance to test this. When you are looking at a yellow tinted screen, physically move your head down to the tinted section and look at it straight on. The tint disappears.

It's similar to the colour shift of TN panels, but a much more subtle change.
Someone obviously needs to mount a 27" iMac upsidedown to fully test this idea. :p

Well, I picked up my iMac this afernoon and as suggested, I got them to set it up in the store beforehand so I could check it out. After inspection in store and on getting home, I'm happy to say there's certainly no yellowing which I can see. Based on my experience so far, everything seems great! Phew :)

Are there more 27" iMacs affacted than 21,5" ones?
I heard once that IPS panels of this size got a way higher quota of displays with flaws than regular TN displays.

...everybody seems to desperately looking for some flaws or downsides??? ...don't get the reason though, unless it's because missing funds...which could be of course frustrating and I would probably also would try to find a reason why it's a great idea not to buy one...just ordered my BTO iMac though

Darn, I really hope this doesn't happen to me. For every one who's seen the yellow tinting: How would you recommend I tested an iMac before buying it so I could see if it has the problem? How obvious should it be? Is there a certain color I should have on screen that would let me notice the yellow better?

Display

Doesn't the current crop of iMac have a panel in System Prefs in which Displays can be detected-resized & the color profile [re]calibrated? does this not offer some tint correction? just a thought. . ..

I have tried it out and the answer is no. The display of my 21.5" 2010 had been changed 5 or 6 times until they mounted a good one. I don't say it's perfect but at least it does not irritate me when I look at it. The iMac is a fantastic machine. I wish I had money for the 27"

It's a design feature that I doubt Apple is likely to change anytime soon. If an iMac arrives with a lot of yellow tinting that means that it endured shock beyond specification during transit (i.e., it was roughly handled during shipping).

What is the best way to check if the display is "clean"? I have just switched from Windows and not sure how to change the default wallpaper to the one that would show whether or not the display is defective.

A few people complaining on a forum wont convince Apple to change something that most people dont notice.

Complaining on a forum doesn't serve any purpose in regards to getting an ongoing issue addressed.

The complaints need to be directed to APPLE, I believe like most companies they respond to feedback they receive from customer who actually bought their product.

Of course, if you did not actually buy one and just want to complain about the 'problem' then this is the place to do that! :D

There are also some obviously faulty dim backlight, yellowish screens, but this is a rarer and separate issue. The trouble is, many people are confusing the two factors.

Bingo!! If I look at it straight on the yellow tint disappears. It's a viewing angle issue on mine.

There do not exist any 27" TN displays with this resolution, so your source is wrong, as far as I know.

Apple menu -> System preferences -> Desktop & Screen Saver -> Desktop and find a uniform colour, grey is a good choice. check its uniform. you can choose to repeat the test with different colours.

As for the discoloring, i thought i read somewhere it was due to the glue used during manufacture and the yellowing faded after a few weeks.
