Any place but here or there....
Just bought an HP Spectre 360 last night to replace my iMac. I hope to set this up tonight. It is for mobility in the house, but not on the go.

Almost bought a Surface Pro 6 -and still might- if on sale despite my not quite feeling the Surface Pen. For portability, it is very light and packs a lot of power. I finally got to fiddle around with a properly set up one and was really impressed save for the Pen.

@GrumpyMom the 2018 iPad may not be a solid choice. If it had more RAM, I’d say keep it for PDF mark up and art. Notability is particularly buggy when trying to write and mark up more than one pdf in a row. Safari crashes a lot, and you have to be patient with Procreate. If your daughter is just using it for doodles and note taking it will be fine.

It sounds like I’d have to agree. Well I guess we will keep it for a family device since all of us sketch, there is a sufficient return period via Amazon for her to evaluate it. She will likely appreciate it for FaceTime with a large display if nothing else.

Goodness what’s happening with Apple that Safari crashes so much? That’s a rhetorical question of course.

I guess I’m going to start bringing myself up to speed so I can do a proper shopping for the best device before high school starts.

Really my tower pc in my office is likely now to become the de facto family computer.

For some reason pages constantly reload and or crash on the 2018 iPad. I did not notice that on the 2017 iPP. That makes me think it’s low RAM.

If you can use the 2018 iPad, it’s a decent device as a family sketch / consumption / FaceTime machine.

I’ll be curious to hear what you choose as far as a device.

Well the ultimate purchase for high school will be several months from now.

I did get the iPad Pro heavily discounted via use of rewards points and a discount price offer from Amazon itself that this forum posted a week or so ago. So I guess I don’t feel too much buyers remorse yet, but it does help to know I can return it.

So much of the news on Apple quality throughout this forum is shockingly discouraging. I’ve just learned about the white dot defect showing up on iPads.

My phone Xr is overall very nice but has some vexing iOS issues in daily use. I encountered them on my 8 Plus as well and on my Mini 4, which is why I’m not sweating a Genius Bar appointment. Features have never been nicer but quality sure has taken a hit.

Oh. If you have a 10.5 iPad Pro, the Safari reloads shouldn’t be a problem due to more ram.

The Apple QC has been rough for almost a decade, but it’s taken a severe decline in the past 3 years and is getting worse. Ditto for AppleCare. After 22 years, and the last 3 being particularly bad for me, I am bailing Apple. The bending iPad Pros comment were the last straw for me. It doesn’t surprise me how negative these forums have become.

So thank you for the great phone reviews/conversations you post. Learning a lot about Android.

While I don't regret my past iPad purchases, I think the odds of me buying a new one in the near future is probably low.
I'm pretty satisfied with my Surface Book 2 these days.
My iPad mini 4, however (which makes a good in-bed reader) has a dying battery. Not sure what I'll do when it finally goes. May look at a Kindle 7" or 8" Android as a replacement.
The smaller Kindles have poor screens compared to iPads, and they're slower - while they're easy to get the Play Services on to, so the software is OK, you'll probably be annoyed by how clunky they seem. The more expensive 10" is in a different league, much faster, and a much better screen - it's worth the extra money. As it's 16:9, the size is misleading, and it isn't as big as you'd expect.

I agree. I'm a big fan of the Fire HD 10 (as if the regulars here couldn't tell. ;) ) The Fire 7 is only worth getting, IMO, when they go on sale for $29.

With only sideloading 3-4 .apks to get Google Services, one can get a highly functional tablet that can do a surprising amount of things, many of which are NOT possible on the iPad Pro.

I've been following the issues you've experienced with the 2018 iPad and I'm sorry to hear of the difficulties. I think that your device might be an anomaly. I'm using my 2018 iPad heavily as a digital notebook for work, home, church, and brainstorming. I'm using GoodNotes instead of Notability (GoodNotes supports hyperlinks in PDFs) on large PDFs without any issues. I often have multiple PDFs open as I have separate PDF-based notebooks/organizers for work, home, and church. I haven't had Safari crash, ProCreate is fine. The only issue I've experienced is with Affinity Designer which is a hog. For vector-based art I use "Graphic for iPad" which is highly functional and super responsive.

Glad to hear yours is behaving.:) For me,
Procreate is a hog*, but perhaps Notability is too. I’ve reset the DFU more than once.

*I always have photo reference open in iPhoto when drawing in Procreate. I am sadly used to iDevices being subpar at this point, which is unfortunate. I’ll DFU and remove Notability when I give it back to mom.

Thanks for addressing this. :)

I got a 7" fire free with some shopping miles and never gave it a thought as it replaced my wife's older kindle paperwhite

However as my wife likes reading in the pool. You know the scenario I'm cleaning gutters she's bobbing along with Fire in one hand and a glass of wine in the other

My concern was if she flipped of the floating chair I know what she would save first and it would not be the fire :(:rolleyes:

So I replaced it with the newer waterproof Kindle, wish I played with the fire now as we just gave it away to a relative
