Warranty is void either way because he has to solder a bigger EEPROM on the card.

Why is that necessary? Can't you use a mini 6-pin to 8-pin adapter to plug directly into the card without modding the card? Seems modding the card would void the warranty.

Because you can use the two normal 6 Pin cables from the Mac Pro. With a mini 6-pin to 8-pin adapter you still have to organize power for the other 6 Pin connector of the card (for example from internal SATA drive ports).

What's the difference between putting a jumper on the back of a video card's 8-pin power connector and using a cable like this:

Wholesale-PCI-E-Mac-Pro-G5-8pin-6-pin-to-8-pin-Mac-video-card-power.jpg_350x350.jpg

Also, how does this guarantee that a video card won't attempt to pull 150W from the 8-pin connector?

Thanks.

I assume he shorts both connectors, so the load will be symmetrically balanced between both 6pin connectors.

Doesn't the cable do the same? It's just shorting from the cable end rather than the connector end, no?

The benefit of doing it from the cable side is that you won't void the warranty of the video card.

I assume that he shorts the 6pin and 8pin connector so that the load is shared symmetrically. I don't know if that's what he really does, but that's what I would do.

If you don't see the value in MVC's posts, just put him on ignore list.
BTW, what GPU do you have in your Mac Pro (If you use a Mac Pro at all), if you don't mind asking?

Putting him on ignore doesn't solve the issue.

In my old 2009 mac pro I have the original gt120 and an unflashed Diamond HD 6800. nMP has D500.

This can also be done on the cable end to preserve the warranty on the video card.
Sure, beside the fact that no such cable is available (I least I have not seen a cable like this before) and would have to be custom made.

There's a surprise! Can be very argumentative and gruff. Plus, he uses this forum as a marketing tool for hacked hardware, which I think diminishes this forum's value.

These forums are filled with people, including MVC, who argue about everything. However, unlike most people making noise here, MVC has contributed enormous value to the Mac Pro community, both through his business and for free. He adds a lot more to this forum, and the community as a whole, than you or I ever will.

Yes, this is true, but shall we keep apples and oranges separate here:
1) Community support, hacking and soldering that MVC doing is amazing and greatly appreciated. He gets lots of kudos from everyone here (me included). I bought the card after all. I am wondering why OWC as a company still didn't poach him and make him work for them... Maybe because of illegality or other potential problems.
2) When your hobby turns into a business then maybe you should start handling it more professionally because you deal with clients in a first place, not your buddies or forum readers. At least if you want it to grow :)

What issue are we talking about?

lemonade-maker thinks MVC is a big meanie and uses this place to sell cards which devalues the forum. So folks told him to ignore him but he takes the high view and that doesn't solve the problem of devaluing the forum.

What I read is MVC doesn't spoon feed us info cheerfully and expects to actually research and he doesn't like the nMP darn him.

I think he's got a day job and this is more hobby and some side funding to continue the hobby. I think in the 10 years or so he's been hacking on cards for Mac's he'd have grown the business if that was his desire.

Thanks lowerendlinux. I guess I should have been a little more wordy. It was a rhetorical question.

Exactly where is the issue (since one has an ignore list, one has a report button, since one has the choice to not read or not, and buy or not). Where Is The Issue?

I choose to read his comments and I enjoy the benefits of his products. That's my choice and I'm glad I have the option. Don't infringe on my choice. I don't need another forum user trying to project his/her choice onto me.

I don't appreciate someone trying to govern my personal choice just because he doesn't personally agree with having a choice.

If you don't like it, use the choices you have... Don't try to take mine away.

I guess I was looking to hard for a segue into the thread once the complaining started.

Take what away? Lots of people hack hardware. Mvc rides their coat tails and sells it here. Glad you like it

Lots of people hack hardware.
Lots? There are exactly 2 people working on Mac EFIs for new PC GPUs, netkas and MVC.

Then there are people (like me) trying to improve their work, e.g. expanding support to non-reference versions or removing certain restrictions.

The big lot of people you're talking about does nothing but sell the work from above 2 groups on ebay.

There was at least one person who modified the GTX 680 Mac Edition firmware to support 4GB.

In regards to claims of all sellers on Ebay are just selling their work, I have no idea on the validity of those claims.

I believe I saw the GTX 980 Ti with EFI firmware available on Ebay before MVC started selling it.
