In the final version, you'll be able to drop down to explorer whenever you want ( ill find link when I'm not on my phome ). So you'll be able to do desktop mode if you want.

Like on the surface, you have metro mode for yoyr touch based stuff, and your kb and trackpad for your desktop mode. Win

What do you mean by dropping down to explorer at any time? There are fundamental issues with windows 8. Practically everyone acknowledges this, apart from MS and the hard core apologists. If you like the ms kool aid, that's fine.

I run linux, apple, and windows machines, I don't drink kool aid.

It means, that in the final release, not the preview, that you will be able to turn off metro and go back to explorer, its not some hidden easter egg. Do you reallt think they'd put all that time and money into updating explorer ( which is what the windows gui is called btw ). Then not let anyone use it?

Windows 8 is also not even in its final version yet

And... apologist.
Win 8 is supreme kludge right now. If they can get human interactivity managed they may save it but MS has never been good at knowing how humans actually work. It is 2 parts OS right now and any meeting of the parts is total failure of motion. But Apple fails similarly with LaunchPad and other iOS mergers. I'd be happier if they just included velcro and I'd just stick my phone on my display. Now I have phone OS and desktop "interwoven". At least then they would both continue to work appropriately.

That's odd since MS has specifically stated that you won't be able to do this and has specifically disabled hacking the registry to be able to do this. You seem to have information that MS shills masquerading as journalists do not have. Where do you get this information that somehow the final release will be so much different to the release preview

What work? You mean how they've basically destroyed the UI completely by adding a non-sensical ribbon to windows explorer and other silly changes that has the windows fans up in arms? You don't need to tell me about windows processes and what they do by the way - I've been using MS DOS since version 5 and Windows since version 3.

Launchpad is indeed the worst thing they could have added. I don't see the advantage of it when compared to just having a folder of all the apps on the right side of the dock. It works beautifully so I never use Launchpad at all.

I guess there is no point buying Mac Pro at this point. Of course it you need a professional machine and want Mac it it the only option but right now it is relatively outdated.

If someone is looking to spend few thousand for Mac Pro I strongly suggest to configure similar Windows Machine and then install hackintosh if you really want a Mac.

This informational helped me a lot: http://printscreenmac.info/how-to-do-print-screen-on-mac/

Nope, I just bought a new GPU (GTX 680) and will keep my 2008 until a real update is made. The 2012 is a joke and a ripoff

Nope. 2008 MP chugging along nicely. The 2012 "spec bump" Apple insulted world + dog with is outdated technology. And it also carries the same 5,1 designation as the 2010 Mac Pro, which in reality it is.

If Apple half-asses their "promised" 2013 refresh, I suspect they can kiss the remaining holdouts goodbye for good.

Well, it looks as though I was right about what MS is planning for the new interface and how they see the desktop. As I said, all of these hacks are being actively blocked by MS.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/Windows-8-Metro-RTM-Server-2012-Release-Preview,news-39360.html

CNET reports that users of the recently-leaked RTM builds of Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 have discovered that one of the tweaks Microsoft has made since the launch of the last public test build, Windows 8 Release Preview, centers on the boot process. Microsoft is reportedly now blocking users from bypassing the boxy Start screen, preventing them from booting straight into Desktop mode.

Previous test builds allowed Windows 8 users to create a shortcut that switches to the Windows 8 desktop. If the user didn't want to boot their machine into the tiled desktop UI (formerly known as Metro), they could simply schedule this shortcut to be activated immediately after logging into the user's account.

Rafael Rivera, coauthor of the forthcoming Windows 8 Secrets, has reportedly verified with RTM downloaders that Microsoft's block of the boot bypass is indeed in place. He also believes that Microsoft has blocked the ability for administrators to use Group Policy to allow users to bypass the tiled startup screen. That said, it seems that Microsoft is trying to keep the desktop of old out of sight, hoping users will simply grow accustomed to the new blocky era of Windows.

As CNET points out, there are a number of shortcuts in Windows 8 that are designed to help users that are resistant to change, allowing them to slip in and out of Desktop mode more quickly and easily. These include Windows + D, Windows + B, and Windows + M. But as we reported last week, Microsoft is getting ready to launch Windows 8-specific peripherals that will make the tiled touch aspect a bit easier to navigate for those without actual touchscreens.

Nope.

My 2010 Hex has plenty of room to improve with upgrades. Looking to double my RAM from 24 to 48GB. Adding more SSDs, maybe a 2x512GB RAID0 or an Accelsior card from OWC if their prices improve relative to an equivalent pair of SSDs. And a CUDA-compliant card to speed up Adobe Premiere Pro if I can figure out which one to get (running Adobe Creative Suite in Mac OS).

I'm on about a 4-year replacement cycle anyway, so wasn't likely that the 2012's would have made me bite without some huge improvement. Curious to see what Apple ends up releasing in 2013. Given the trends, I'm not all that hopeful. Mainly doing high-def video work, just looking for a Mac truck to do the job.

MS not knowing how humans actually work? That explains why when I walk into any major corp the hundreds of Macs... Oh wait;)

For anybody interested: seems like Apple adjusted their refurb-prices. At least here in Germany.

I'm torn between the Hex (2500€) and the 2.66 12-core (4000€)..ahhhrg!

Well that has been the trend hasn't it:p Less PC tech's needed as 90% if given the choice choose Apple over PC. Most business does not give users a choice but if they did the landscape would definitely change.
I meant as individual homo sapiens not as voucher stubs for reduced prices on hackable mono environments. MS has that covered in spades. Think Visio, Project, Sharepoint, and whatever other "me too" tech they decide to roll out.

Toyota Corolla is the world's best selling car. Does that mean it's the best car?

Sorry, but MS has had to pay too many court ordered and out of court settlements for anti-competitive actions to former competitors to make that argument. A large part of MS's success is not due to the merits of it's products but to the duplicity of it's marketing department. They settled with IBM alone for a billion dollars.

I was so hopeful about the 2012.
Definite NO.

I can wait until 2013.
That is the cutoff for me.

I can't understand why Apple doesn't want to cash in on the high visibility of the folks who do sound for movies.
Many of the LA pros are die hard Mac people.
Many of these people are jumping ship. BUMPEACWLAP

I think Steve would have wanted to support the pro user.
Seems like a "state of the art" Mac Pro would be something he would brag about.

Maybe Mr. Cook has something insanely great up his sleeve.
Or maybe I'm insane to trust his word.

He did give his word.

Or, it looks as though you are wrong. Do you actually use W8?
Here is a link to some screen shots of the W8 desttop:

Here is a link to the RTM version that you can downlod so you will have acurate information, the actual version that will ship in October.

Yes, I have used it extensively. What am I wrong about? Are you suggesting that the info in the links from tomshardware is incorrect?
