I just logged into my ATT account on the website and my bill is something like $116. I got the $60 service plan and the activation is around $36 (or so I thought), which leaves about $20 for taxes and other fees. That seems a little high doesn't it? I haven't gone over any of my primetime minutes, weekend minutes or sms messages. Unfortunately the website won't let me see a cost breakdown and the ATT cust. service reps aren't in the office until Monday. Has anybody else checked their first bill yet?

Mine is over $100 too. But it's because my billing cycle apparently will start on the 6th of each month, and since I activated the phone on 6/29, I have nearly $10 in additional charges for the partial month. In other words, this first bill is extra high because it's for service for the period from 6/29 - 8/5, plus the one time $36 activation fee is on there as well.

I started thinking about that too after I posted. Didn't even consider the fact that I activated on the 29th as well. Guess I need to check out my billing cycle dates. My mom activated hers about an hour before I did so I'm also going to ask her what her bill is showing for comparison's sake.

Ok, so my ATT account says next billing cycle starts 8/4.

My bill is $146.90.... :)

They pro-rate you based on when you started the service; nothing is free. I have the 900/rollover plan.

Mine is like 98-99.00 It will be 90.00 every month kind of expensive. What iam hoping is that apple updates really make this phone worthwhile. If it wasnt for amazon.com giving me 175 in rebates to switch there company with a sony ericksonn I would be really feeling sick right now. I love the IPHONE but it does have its flaws I hope they correct sooner then later.

Thanks for reminding me. Ah, here's mine:

Monthly Service Charges $65.99
Usage Charges $0.00
Credits/Adjustments/Other Charges $40.23
Government Fees & Taxes $5.61
Total amount due $111.83

Next Bill Cycle
08/02/2007

Payment Due: 07/27/2007

Anytime Minutes Used 59 of 450
Night/Weekend Minutes Used 146 of 5,000
Mobile to Mobile Minutes Used 49 of Unlimited

So, without much talk, I've done 59 minutes of non-mobile-to-mobile, prime-time calling. Great. I'm coming from my Nextel free incoming calls plan, so I'm a bit curious how this "rollover" and "free mobile-to-mobile" is going to do for me.

I activated on the 29th, at night, so its interesting that even though I was getting service for the weekend, my plan only officially began the following Monday when someone got in to process it. I might be crazy, but I think I got an entire weekend for free (not likely), or they've somehow bundled the charge in somewhere. Not sure what the $40.23 is, other than the $35 activation. Somewhat difficult for me to not shrug my shoulders on this first bill however.

And since they are pro-rating the monthly charges, are they also going to give us pro-rated roll-over minutes?
Fantastic question. My initial thought is no, but if they charge us, we should get what we paid for. Then again, they will say it is prorated for your actual usage, which would mean no rollover minutes would accumulate. Tricky just like their mis-leading unlimited M2M voice and text messages being part of all plans.

According to the brochure, billing period 1 doesn't roll over. Billing period 2+ do.

I am also currenty with Nextel free incoming plan for around $100 a month and I usually have around 5000-7000 incoming minutes. I do not think iPhone can be my main phone, it is just not make sense cost wise. That sucks big time. Does AT&T have a free incoming anytime minutes plan at all?

Billing period 1 doesn't roll over? What kind of crap is that?

Also, when do nights and weekends start and end?

Actually, I'm on the lowest plan, and my Nextel plan was $59/mo. too. If you have 5000-7000 incoming minutes, you'd likely want a better plan than the base iPhone plan I have. The plan lists are here:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/rateplans.html
You'd get unlimited nights and weekends (9pm-6am, +$8.99 for 7pm-7am) in any case (on my base plan I only get 5000). If most of your calls are coming in from AT&T subscribers, that's completely free whether you call them or they call you. Again, I'm interested to see how it works out for myself, but so far so good.

To my knowledge, Nextel is the ONLY provider offering "free incoming calls" (although T-Mobile has opened a convenient "hole" with its "my Fave 5" feature). I certainly got spoiled on it, but not really using it THAT much, I don't think it matter that much in the end for me.

I will have to think about the $120 plan. May be that will fit. My phone number is served by a non-mobile carrier who will find me whereever I am, meaning they try a few different numbers until I answer. Given the free incoming minutes of Nextel, I always pick up the call on my cell so I have more mobility. Sometimes these calls last for more than hour. Couple of such calls a day for 22 days a month, I am already pushing past 2500 minutes.

Having gotten used to free incoming, it is a bit of a shock that I have to pay for that with AT&T. I hear that people use their cell phone as their only phone. That is quite an expensive proposition if incoming minutes are counted. May be I should buy the stock of these cell phone carriers :) It is quite obnoxious.

My bill is normal, I just called and got out of the activation fee. Usually they will take if off if you just ask nicely.

First bill is always really high. They pro-rate from the day you started and for the next month, so it gets pricey. Then, since they pro-rate text messaging too, you only get a percentage of the 200 text messages for the first month. If you text a lot then you can easily go over and get screwed paying extra fees.

Trust me, I have experience with stuff like this. My first AT&T bill was $264 and I didn't even have an iPhone. :)
