For most people who bought the 3G when it came out, their actual contracts last until July 11, 2010. However, the upgrade eligibility date is different from the contract expiration date. AT&T allows people paying a certain amount per month to upgrade a few months early. In this case, December 12, 2009 is the early upgrade date (18 months).

Pretty much nailed it there. Except they told me in store that the Primary account holder and secondary account holder if spending over a certain amount can upgrade only after 1 year. Pretty sure i am already eligible.

i sold my 3g in like new condition for $520 about 1 month after the 3gs release... i expect to sell my 32gig 3gs in like new condition for the same amount....your price of $250 is way off

$520 for a 1 year old used 3G?!

Maybe my $250 is way off then. If they drop the 16GB 3GS price to $99 and continue to sell it after the 4G comes out (like they did with the 3G), who would buy one used on eBay for $500?? I would think $300 max for the 16GB and $350-400 max for the 32GB. What do other people think?

12/12 is a very common upgrade eligibility date for people who bought the 3G the first day it was available. I know I am upgrading to the 3GS tomorrow! I'm guessing there won't be any lines, but it could be a pretty busy day at some stores.

I'm really sorry to hear you say that. But I'm with the majority of the iPhone 3G users that don't see the 3GS as a big enough upgrade and am waiting until june. I think once you see the new iPhones features you're going to be kicking yourself that you didn't hold off until then. If you want a new phone jailbreak your iPhone 3G

look on ebay for 16gig 3g they are still going for over $500 used

My upgrade date was 12/12.
I plan on waiting until after the holidays and will upgrade to the 3G(S) in January
Then sell the 3G jailbroken and unlocked.
???
PROFIT!

I've been debating this for a while, wait for the next iPhone or get the 3Gs, which I know I'll be happy with. If only the 3Gs had 64 GB, I probably would have paid the early upgrade price and bought it when it came out. My 3G has a couple cracks on it that are getting bigger (my fault from dropping it, will use a case from now on!)

I've been checking and was upgrade eligible on 12/12, but I just checked AT&T's website and Apple's, and both list the price of a 32GB 3Gs at $299, so it looks like I'm eligible today! I think I'll stop by my nearest Apple Store after work and hopefully I will get one for $299 tonight. Everyone else may want to check their upgrade eligibility, I'll let you know what happens later tonight.

I was indeed eligible on the 11th as well, so I picked up my new white 32 GB at the mall on Friday night. It rocks! It only took like 10 minutes to do the upgrade. It took me a while to figure out how to get all of my Apps and App data onto the new phone, but I eventually figured it out.

My wife is enjoying my old 3G and using it as an iPod touch.

Why do people insist on waiting on something that is at least SEVEN months away?!?!?! In the worse case scenario you can always sell your 3GS next June, and if it is in good condition you'll get enough to almost cover AT&T's early upgrade price!

Maybe because that person, my self included, doesn't feel the need to upgrade to every single model that comes out? Frankly, I've played around with a 3GS vs my 3G, and for the hassle\cost of upgrading, it's just not worth it. The 3G does everything I need and then some. I'm waiting for June, and unless there is some stellar reason to upgrade at that point, will probably wait a while as well.

Someone who doesn't want a 2-year contract with AT&T?

By next summer I expect 1-year old 3GSes to be far more valuable on Craigslist than new ones, since they will be capable of an untethered jailbreak and unlock, while the new ones may not.

i won mine sept of 2008 but i can upgrade to the 3gs feb 10th 2010...

not even going to bother...ill have the upper hand come next june or whatever the release date is for the next one...

I'm also eligible as of the 12th. I plan to get the 3GS in white this week as soon as I get paid. I've been wanting to get a new phone since Xmas eve last year when I dropped my phone and the screen cracked. It works fine, but every time I look at it...Ugh. Also, I wanted the white one when the 3G came out, but they ran out, and I after waiting in line I just wanted a phone already, so I got the black. This will also be a memory upgrade for me, as my current phone is just 8g and I can't fit everything on it.

original iphone?

I am waiting until june 2010 to upgrade as well....and I have a 16bg ORIGINAL iphone!!! : D

After playing around with both iphones 3G and 3GS, I didn't think an upgrade was necessary for me, however, I am definitely upgrading this summer!

Where should I sell my original iphone (craigslist, ebay??) and how much do you think I can get for it, come summer 2010? I know probably not much, but I spent $500 plus termination fee from Sprint to change to iphone in March 2008! Want to get some money back out of it. It is in pristine condition, absolutely no scratches, been in Otterbox defender case the entire life of the phone, works absolutely great.

Also, I am currently eligible for an iphone reduced price upgrade...does this upgrade expire or will I still be eligible for the reduced price upgrade once the new phone comes out summer 2010?

thanks for answering my questions! Love yall!!! :)

Maybe because some people don't have a sickness where they need to upgrade everything in their lives continually and are perfectly content with their 3G model which is 95% as good?

I wouldn't take advantage of the 3GS improvements at all. I have several friends with 3GS models and I've played with them plenty. I can wait the extra 1/4 second for my SMS or email apps to open, and I can wait until June/July to upgrade despite being eligible today.

Let's say Apple does with the 3GS what it did with the 3G come this summer, meaning the 16GB 3GS model will still be available for sale at a reduced price of $99. If one buys a 3GS today for $199, they could probably sell it for $250 once the flood of 3GS models hit eBay when the new 4G phone comes out next summer - particularly if Apple still sells the 3GS for a reduced price. Now let's say the early upgrade price for the lower capacity 4G model will be $399. That's still an additional $150 expenditure 7 months from now and that's not worth it for everyone. I can personally wait.

-200 for 3GS now
+250 to sell it used in summer 2010 if Apple continues to sell it for a reduced price of $99
---------
= +50
-400 for early upgrade
---------
= -350 poorer than I am today.

I would personally rather only be $200 poorer instead of $350 poorer if I get no real benefit in the 3G>3GS upgrade. The 4G should hopefully be a much bigger upgrade than the 3GS was. Maybe not, but I won't feel compelled to upgrade then either just because I can.

not like AT&T will give you a break on the monthly fee for keeping your old phone

I bought my 3G on launch but for some reason I'm not eligible until March. Oh well, I planned on waiting for the next iPhone anyways.

To each their own. I upgraded mine on the 13th and haven't looked back. The speed is amazing, I used to get so frustrated, it would take like 20 seconds to check my yahoo mail, now it's like 5 seconds.

Then there are the other benefits:

-I love to run, and the built in Nike Plus just rocks
-I love the voice activated ipod control!!! Even if it doesn't always recognize what i tell it to do
-When I am in NYC in 2 weeks I am going to love having that compas when the maps can't pick up the GPS between the tall buildings
-Video recording - probably won't use it very often, but man when I do use it, it's going to be a lot of fun!

do you have the 450 minute plan or the 900 minute? text plan? what is your average monthly bill? I think that determines eligibility, if you're around $100 a month you were eligible. I think some who were at like $120 a month got to upgrade the day after 3GS came out! ;)

btw, the total has to be PER LINE, not for the whole account.

Also on the day you go to do the upgrade your AT&T bill must be paid in full, if you have a balance on the account they will not do the upgrade.

I can't speak from experience as the 3GS is my first iPhone. But I'll apply the same logic/scenario I just experienced when contemplating upgrading the iMac I bought mid last year.

I didn't upgrade. It's not that important to me and my iMac does everything I need it to do for now. And the investment I put into the computer + time to load software, etc just isn't worth the hassle of re-doing it until perhaps the NEXT upgrade.

But note in my above - it's not a money thing. There are two (at least) aspects to upgrading. Cost vs. Usage.

If cost is an issue and you like to have the latest (at the moment) - then one should wait until June to "maximize" their investment.

If usage is important - then there's no reason to wait. You can enjoy 6 months (or more if you don't immediately upgrade to the newer phone) with the 3GS.

There is always going to be something newer/better coming out. The question you need to ask yourself is - will you enjoy using the device enough to warrant the expense.

Perhaps a bad analogy - but, for example, when I go (rarely) to Vegas and gamble. I set aside how much I'm willing to lose. Yes lose. If I win - GREAT - if I lose, I'm already OK with it going into the scenario. I look at the time gambling as money spent on entertainment. Much like spending $125 for a broadway show for 2 hours. If I spend a couple of hours gambling and I lose it all I don't see it as a full on "loss." I see it as paying for the entertainment time. Winning is gravy. (and don't get me wrong, I love to win and have never walked away having spent what my "allotment" was)

Anyway - my .02. To buy or not to buy is really about whether or not you don't mind spending the month and whether or not you'll get to enjoy using it for as long as you own it.

I have the minimum plan (450 mins, no text plan, 15% work discount) and I was eligible for the upgrade. My monthly bill is around $65. Some people who have expensive plans were actually eligible way back in July. Maybe it's because I am a light user?? I only average about 100 minutes and 300 MBytes per month. Or maybe it has something to do with the work discount.

I have the 450 minute and 200 text plan. My bill is not close to $100. AT&T is still adding some discount that was suppose to be dropped when I got the 3G. That is probably why I am not eligible. I autopay my bill every month, so that would not be an issue. Thanks for the info.

@Wack4alanis - I have similar plan (work discount) but with text messages. I am not eligible.
