Yeah it would be nice.

A worksation doesn't HAVE to me rack mountable. My workstation weighs almost 80 pounds, I would hate to have to try to rackmount something like that lol

No problem its done with Power amps all the time

I would bet money that the case will be revamped, either majorly for design/engineering reasons, or a minor tweak for psychological reasons. On a product design so perfect, minor subtle changes (changes in vent hole sizing and placement) can really put it over the top.

I bet this thing will look amazing. Functionally I don't care either, but the designer in me likes to speculate. It will be sleek, streamlined, subtly updated, dope. It should ooze perfection, and all it needs is a subtle nudge.

Oh I know that for sure lol.

I don't mind my huge workstation chilling on the backside of my massive desk.

But it being rack mountable wouldn't hurt.

Mine weighs about 80lbs, its a bitch to lift around lol, esp when I Have to carry it up 4 flights of stairs, then across the whole building ( yes, it happened on the 3 days that they were swapping out the pullys/cables/motor in the elevator...joy ).

Ouch! Hump hump & hump. It almost sounds like a dare, like they way the Scots started the caber toss. "Listen here you! I bet you can't carry the fully loaded MacPro up those 4 flights of stair...." j/k

still waiting

I'v been waiting for 3 years to buy a new Mac Pro, the design plays very little in my buying decision. its all about the hardware, with that said I have been operating using a Hackintosh i7-950 with 5870, 24gigs of ram and a SSD. this system has been solid for me to get my work done day in and day out so I am hoping the new Mac Pro has power and graphics abilities comparably. With money tight these days its hard to shell out big bucks on a workstation with 3 to 4 year old graphics technology.

I REALLY hope there is no redesign of the case - purelu because it would make it so much easier to use the new box to sell my 2008 Mac Pro in!

A redesign would mean I would need to scout around for a large box and padding.

But more internal storage would be nice ...

I only care about a case redesign inasmuch as it improves upon the machines expandability or other capabilities.

What would I like to see?

1) Internal, removable dust filters (probably not, but one can dream)
2) Improved support for 2.5" drives; perhaps sleds which can accommodate both
3) Built-in support for more drives somehow
4) IO improvements (TB, USB3, the basics)
5) Quieter fans; perhaps some improved sound dampening in the case
6) Second dual-slot PCIe expansion slot, but keep all four lanes (not sure how if the case remains more-or-less the same, but if anyone can do it, it's Apple)

As a fellow designer, it's hard for me to believe that Jony Ive would be ok with Apple selling a 2012 MacPro with an almost 10 year old design. I'm pretty confident that we are going to get a new box, and with Sir Jonathan Ive at the helms its going to be nothing short of impressive. That being said they could wrap up those parts in just about anything and I'd still buy one.

<dream>It would be great if it was rack-mountable - Head shake </dream>

Seems like the rack mount is not going to be part of the deal http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/06/ru...detailed-ahead-of-possible-wwdc-announcement/.

I am kinda betting that we are going to get the same case. I would not mind if they yank the dvd drives and get it 3o punds lighter and 25% smaller. I use dvd and blu ray, and would not mind going external.

There is something to be said for the aesthetics - if i can point to the box and tell my client "look, i have the latest and the greatest" it is definitely worth an upgrade

It's hard to believe anything that says:

Apple will not be using Ivy Bridge processors for the Mac Pros since apparently they “handle voltage far worse than their 32nm Sandy bridge brethren.”

I don't even know where to start with this because it's wrong on every level.

Oh come on everyone who says the case doesn't matter,

If a super sexy new case came out--you'd be all over it. Aesthetics matter, even for pro users.

Oh, it would be nice. But again, I care about what's on the inside more. If it doesn't help me work better, it's just extra.

It's nice if these things look pretty, but I'm not buying these things as art pieces.

I wan't a new case. Bad. But am I going to have a piss and not buy a 2012 mac pro because of that. No. It's whats inside that matters and for being an almost 10 year old design, the current case is still one of the most beautiful towers money can buy. But I really REALLY have a feeling that we will see some Jony Ive magic come monday. I'll be ECSTATIC for a 2012 mac pro in a 2003 case. But if I'm right and we get a re-design. Get ready for this. Straight from the floor of my office.

Oh it matters, but I don't think it would make me go from not-buying to buying on the case alone.

I posted in another thread, comparisons of some Apple products in 2003. They look incredibly outdated. So I reasoned that the 2003 design of the Mac Pro has to go.

On the other hand, unlike the 2003 iPod or the 2003 iMac, the current Mac Pro actually looks reasonably modern. There really haven't been too many advances in case designs since 2003, so it wouldn't be out of the question for the new Mac Pro to have a similar case. I wouldn't be surprised if there's only 1 optical bay, though.

Exactly.... My Mac Pro sits proudly on my desk.

I can't imagine it sitting on the floor where I might accidentally bump it with my foot!

Amen. It sits under my desk. I prop my legs up on it. It's nice that it looks nice, but the fact that it's quiet and powerful is orders of magnitude more important. (to be fair, it's somewhat of a fail as a footrest, the dell next to it with the nice flat top gets much more leg-on-top action :p)

I buy each & every one of my Macs to use, since they are the tools I use to make a good living. If my MBP's are styled to my liking; that's nice but nothing more. I only care what they're capable of doing.

In the case of the Mac Pro, it's appearance makes absolutely no difference to me.

I think they're built sturdy enough to easily withstand a foot bump. :p

(But I'm pretty sure that's sarcasm.)

I think the real issue is, can the foot survive a bump with a MP? I'm pretty sure many of us know the answer to question from first hand experience. :D

How much would you pay me for my '08 Box?
