Thanks for the phone number tip. I just called 611 and it was giving me "technical difficulty" this time. I noticed it was still trying to forward me to small business. I then called 1-866-907-3484 number and heard "welcomed to new AT&T". Spoke to ATT rep who says there seems to be an unresolved issue with my account and will contact me when it's resolved (and gave me a big range of est 4 to 48 hours). By now, I spent total about 10 hours in Apple store yesterday and today, not to mention 3 round trips of 25 miles distance. I will try one more time tomorrow if ATT resolves this IRU error issue...

Ok. just called the above number and the claim my BMG indicator was removed and I should be good to go.

I just called again to check. And my BMG indicator is still there. They told me about 4 hours to take care of it. It's been about 20 hours already argghhhh. I'm hard to piss off, but I'm getting there with AT&T...

Seems like if you call 611 and you don't get business services, but a message saying "the new ATT" or the customer service is closed, you are in the clear. I went and finally got my phone last night at 8pm with no more IRU errors, and then received a call at 945pm from ATT saying that I'm in the clear and I can go and purchase the phone from apple. Another friend of mine received the same call at 9PM. So it looks like 2 things

1) they are actually calling people (although late)
2) it may be fixed before they even call you

I'd just saying keep trying 611 and once you are not sent to business services you are clear.

Yay finally got my iPhone. White is so nice :)

So I was in the city having lunch. Afterwards since I was close by to the SoHo store I called 611 and I DIDN'T get redirected to small business customer care, I was actually surprised LOL. Thought it was a glitch. Gave 611 another call and it went right to the menu, no mention of business at all.

Went to the Apple Store with my iPhone "pickup" card (I was already on line before!). And good thing I had that card or I would had to stand in that long line out in the hot NYC sun again, there was a lot of people online today. Crossed my finger during the account check process, and I was so happy when the IRU error didn't come up, I was literally grinning with glee. Got my iPhone and was out the store in 10 minutes flat!

lalala ~ good luck to the rest of you with IRU error.

PS: I also got a call from AT&T last night. The message said I should be able to pick up and iPhone at the Apple Store, but should wait at least 6 hours before I go.

Awesome! I'm glad to see some of you are starting to get your phones and that ATT worked out the issue.

I still think ATT should give some sort of compensation for this mess. At least the activation or re-activation charges should be waived. Another person I know who had the same problem called and asked about that and they said:

"we're not offering any compensation for iPhone problems." The AT&T rep also blamed Apple for all problems and said I should have bought from the AT&T store"

What a crock. I called Thursday night and they said I can buy it at either store. I'll wait till the smoke clears in the middle of the week to talk with a CSR about at least getting the activation charge waived. Till then, I'll just enjoy my new phone and forget about ATT.

Best of luck and enjoy the iPhone!

Wish I could report good luck like the rest of you guys. I can't even check if it'll work at this point.

Stopped by the Apple store today, and unsurprisingly they were out of stock on all models. Talked to the rep, who went in back to check with the manager, and they basically gave me their version of "our hands are tied/there's nothing we can do". There is, according to the manager, NO WAY I can keep my current iPhone. It must be COMPLETELY returned (which will incur a restocking fee...I didn't bother to ask if it could be waived as they had none), and then I have to go through the whole purchase fiasco all over again. And with still no guarantee the problem is solved.

I'd go to another store, but the only one's that might have stock are at least a 1.5 to 2 hour drive, one way....

hard-case, I don't know if I completely follow your situation, but I have a friend who went to an Apple store and got IRU'd, so they threw a fit and decided to open a completely new account so they could get the phone.

Well yesterday they took that new account (new phone number and all) to an ATT store and was able to cancel that account, then take that cancelled phone and replace it with their existing ATT iPhone that they wanted to upgrade in the first place. No extra charges or anything. So they slipped through the system. I'm not sure everyone could do this, but if you go to the right ATT store, they might do this switch for you.

Interesting. That contradicts what I've been told by two managers and three service reps on both the corporate and personal business side of AT&T by phone AND by the manager of an AT&T store. Each of them specifically said that what your friend was able to do, swapping phones between accounts, was "impossible". The new account was tied to the iPhone, and that any way of closing it without returning of the iPhone would hit me with a $400 charge to get to the unsubsidized price of the phone.

I just spent two hours earlier on the phone with AppleCare, who contacted AT&T for me. According the the rep I spoke to, this can be taken care of. I've got a new sim for my old account in my iPhone and everything is running fine just for being able to access my old line. The only issue now is getting the old account cancelled. Apparently I need to speak to someone in the Customer Relations Team and they can handle it. I guess I'll just have to see, but the warm and fuzzies I had for AT&T are dead and gone....

Having the same issues. Got to the apple store at 730am yesterday, waited til 330pm to get in. Got the IRU error, called and removed the FAN removed right away. Within minutes the FAN # didn't show up on my online account. Tried to go through the process a few times for 2 hours, and no luck. Finally the apple rep called some private ATT line and the person said they will take care of everything in a few hours. When back at 9pm, and it failed again. Called ATT again and they said they would submit the request again, but nothing can be done now since it's automatically done.

Woke up this morning, called and ATT said it has no clue where it is in the process. Called at 2pm and got the same thing.

The only difference since removing fan is, when I call 611 I am now directed to a normal ATT line. Yesterday I was directed to a small business line. I asked an ATT rep about that yesterday and she said, they were probably just directing some calls to the business lines as overflow. The rep at 2pm said they could have fixed my line, but not called me. She said she has no clue what the status is. And by fixed she said "fix the problem that's not allowing me to buy the phone at Apple". They really are being pretty vague.

Luckily the nice apple reps have a phone and accessories on hold for me, but say I should wait for a call from ATT first before I come back in. Any advice would be great. And keep sharing your stories.

Good god. Why not just waste all that time getting an iPhone from an ATT store? Sounds much easier to me. (even IF u have to wait in line)

That's exactly what I did. Knowing full well Apple wasn't going to be able to help me ('cause i have a FAN) I just went straight to ATT store. Twas easy.
