I'll tell you what: just pay me $250 and I'll buy the correct type of RAM for you and install it. I'll even ship it back to you for free. :D

it wasn't the installing part I was concerned about. I was worried about the non apple ram.
geez... sorry I mentioned anything!

By the way, apple charges $400 for 16gb of ram by itself so I'm getting a deal.

Flatfoot, I am the general manager of a few independent electronic stores (read: not bestbuy or some other big box) so I feel I have a unique insight when it comes to these situations. Do not let these yahoos tell you how to handle your own equipment. Yes could you install the RAM? sure, do you want to? No. Its that simple. This is why I am in the line of work I am, 95% of our customers dont care to know why or how we do what we do, but they can rest assured its done right the first time.

I used to wrench on cars quite a bit, I've done more in-depth upgrades/repairs then most mechanics, I can change out a clutch/flywheel in an afternoon, but did I pay someone to do it last time? You bet. People fail to consider what your time is worth, not to mention your comfort level. I'd bet anyone on here that is suggesting you do the upgrades yourself could fix a wax seal on their toilet, but I'm sure most of them would bring out a plumber anyway. Same philosophy.

Enjoy your new mini!

Finally, some insight!

I can assure you, I'm no yahoo, dear. I have a Masters in CS.

Undoing 2 clips and slotting in some RAM is in no way comparable to mechanics or plumbing and well you know it. I do appreciate that electrical retailers are in the business of making money by offering additional services to customers. However, charging hundreds of dollars (or pounds) for 16gb of RAM is scandalous. Fitting it is in no way difficult. At all.

Finally, some insight!

You are kidding, right?

Installing RAM in a Mac Mini is not analogous to replacing a clutch/flywheel or reseating a toilet. Not Even Close...

My earlier comparison to screwing in a lightbulb is much closer to reality. Now, maybe 10-15 years ago I would look at things differently... The user had to partially dismantle the computer case and RAM slots could be a notoriously tight fit. The first time I did it I thought that I might break the darn thing because I had to press down so hard!

But in recent years the RAM slots that I have dealt with have offered a reasonable amount of resistance when installing the chips. And accessing the inside of the Mini is as simple as removing the bottom cover; you don't even need a screwdriver. As long as you are able to see the tiny slot in the RAM so you can line it up correctly and you follow the directions in order to avoid a static electricity discharge, you should be good to go in 5 or maybe 10 minutes if it is your first time installing RAM.

No I'm not kidding and yes you missed my point. He or she was giving good advice to somebody who wasn't comfortable in doing it. Analogies are a perfect way to get your point across.
This has nothing to do with me, I will be installing my own memory.

I appreciate the point of his advice... it's the analogy that I disagree with. Yes, analogies are often a good way to make a point. But if you want to be taken seriously it is best to use an analogy that makes some sense. Or avoid using an analogy altogether and use some other means to support your opinion.

I know it's hard for some people to understand this but there are MILLIONS of people who WON'T or CAN'T install memory in a computer, my wife would be one of them. I sell cars for a living, guess how many people bring their new cars back to have their license plates installed because they don't have the tools or are just too lazy. That's not an analogy, just pure fact.

I know... I know... everyone here says how easy it is. But after reading all the posts about buyers being confused as to what brand, type, model etc.. and posting about high failure rates. I'm seriously considering letting apple do the install. Anyone else go this route?

Cancel your order
Order from Crucial
Take Ram to Apple Store
Let them install

You Don't Have To Be Insulting...

Like I previously wrote: I understand the point that you and KyleAwesome are attempting to make. And I agree that if someone just doesn't feel comfortable attempting to install RAM then they shouldn't try (if they don't have a friend who can do it for them).

But KyleAwesome's analogy is simply ridiculous; installing RAM in a Mac Mini isn't close to being as difficult as the automobile and plumbing repairs that he refers to. Someone reading that may be dissuaded from even trying, even though there are step-by-step written instructions and videos available online.

I will be getting the 2.3GHz Intel Core i7 Mac mini (€895) and have been looking at the RAM install videos on YouTube; it's so easy to do! I will be going from 4 to 8GB RAM and the price Apple charge for extra RAM is ridiculous! DIY RAM install is the way to go. Thanks to the above links to Crucial's site, you really save a fortune on RAM!

Taken out of context just a bit there dont you think?

No where did I compare those activities directly against installing RAM in a mini. What I was illustrating, and I believe you underscored, was the idea that this procedure, is as foreign to some users as the repairs I mentioned. I never once said, or insinuated that they are the same level of difficulty. The fact is that the insides of a computer (especially a brand new, still under warranty system) are not always what the average joe wants to mess with. That does not speak to the ability of the person in question.

In addition to that, I also made the case that even if this imaginary person was fully capable to perform the install, that it is their choice to pay a professional to do in a few minutes, what may after reading, ordering parts, performing the install take more time than they care to spend.

As is the case with any luxury goods, sometimes its just easier/safer/what-have-you to pay someone else to do it.

Whatever...

This debate has become rather pointless. The Mini has been ordered; the deed is done. It isn't my money being spent, so why should I care?

I just finished installing 16GB. It took under five minutes. $218 for five minutes work isn't too shabby!

There is nothing special about the RAM that Apple sells. Companies like Crucial (Micron) are the ones who actually manufacture RAM. All you're getting from Apple is ripped off. I hope you remember this next time.
