Most iPhone users ( including myself ) touch the ?123 softkey at the bottom left corner, then we touch the desired punctuation mark and the bottom left corner key again to return to QWERTY. I learnt how to do it in a faster way. ( Hopefully ) When you touch the bottom left key, do not release it but slide your finger over to your desired punctuation mark to select. Then as soon as your finger breaks contact, the keyboard reverts immediately to QWERTY! Try it!

Thoughts?

This is little-known but it is indeed shared among certain podcast and forums. ;)

Its something I didnt know

But pressing space after choosing your puncuation automatically switches it back to the letters screen anyway.

And I cant think of a time when you would put in punctuation without following it by a space.... unless its the end of the message.

Don't forget about other punctuation marks such as ( which may be followed directly by text.

Mine automatically puts in any apostrophe's.... eg. Don't.

I wasnt knocking this thread... its a useful tip... I was just saying that pushing space is something I find easier and have got used to :)

Very useful tip. It will a little to make it a habit.
Just used it.

It's nice to finally see a thread discussing useful iPhone info instead of the bantering and it's the iPhone so it's perfect.

When typing in something like ".com" and not in "email mode" for the keyboard. It would also happen if you're entering in a floating point number like 1.23. Of course for the number, you don't want it to switch back to letters...

Not just punctuation, though...

This also works for other keys. For example, where you have the ".com" key, if you hold it you get the other usual suspects, such as ".co.uk", etc. and can select them in the same way. And if you want a letter with an accent, keep your finger on the letter and get the options displayed...

Not well advertised, but useful.

Tiptopp

I usually dont do this, but...

That wasnt irony.

I typed that sentence on a keyboard on my PC. I never use proper punctuation when posting on a messageboard.

If I typed that on an iphone, I guess at a stretch you would, maybe, have a bit of a point, because then that would have been bad punctuation typed on an iphone, in a thread about the iphone keypad.

It wasnt though.

So it wasnt irony, it was an observation by you, that I didnt use the correct punctuation, in a thread about iphone keypad shortcuts.

Anyhow, lets draw a line under this, and congratulate the OP on creating a thread thats, positive, useful and hasnt been done once a week for the last few years.
