I'm not holding out but when that does happen I will certainly purchase another one. The current model works great and I have no complaints however if a better one is released I will be very happy to upgrade.

I feel the same way. I want 2, but I'll wait until an upgrade comes to get the second one.

I like the idea of some form of smaller SSD. I mostly just keep my common playlists on the aTV and stream movies, so I have no need for a huge hard drive. I don't use the remote, I have a Harmony and an iPhone. Mine has been reasonably stable. I do really hope the new one supports 1080p. The ultimate would include a BluRay drive, but that seems unlikely at best.

I loved it the day I got it, and the software updates have only made it better. I always tinkered around with PC's for media players on my TV and never got anything close to aTV, which is exactly what I always wanted.

I need to stop now before I stop and pick up another one on my way home today!

Honestly, i think a SSD makes very little sense for a stationary device like the appleTV, Though i concede that a hybrid could work, have about 4-8 gigs of flash memory as a network cache that might improve streaming, combined with a traditional hard drive for local storage

Me either, except adding storage would be nice without having to hack the unit.

A dedicated server would make far more sense, But really, apple has no (technical) reason for not being able to make the airport base stations operate as servers for itunes.

Umm... air vents so it runs cooler, an 'off' switch or some sort of standby mode, volume controls on the remote...

I second that. Better energy management and cooler unit is a must. I refuse to buy one till has a low energy power savings mode / off button. Its crazy having all these devices drawing so much power in standby mode. Also, what's the deal with this 40GB hard drive nonsense? Can you even buy a 40GB hard drive anymore?

Since it's still PATA, sure...

yeah... the SSD wouldn't make sense, and would most likely raise the price too high. Apple already has trouble selling the ATV.

i think it would be great if we didn't have to purchase something like the ATV Flash - and for Apple to provide actual programs to use... just having a web browser would mean so much!

also the ultimate setup would be an app on the iPhone to fully control the ATV (kindof like Remote for iTunes, but way sicker) - and not have the drawbacks of current 'remote' apps.

Get a better router it will make a world of difference. I was having the same issues as you. Just about ready to give up. Finally dumped the Linksys and got the new Airport Extreme. Apple TV has been perfect every since. No drops outs, no freezing......no problems at all

I already have the Airport Extreme (gigabit). I think my issues are either due to the large size of the library (1.1TB), hardware fault with my Apple TV (though diagnostics never report a problem), or some sort of compatibility issue with my TV (Toshiba LCD TV via HDMI).

I've had all sorts of graphics issues with my Apple TV - when playing podcasts I've had the artwork getting stuck while the animated flip from side to side takes place. I've had movies play with audio but no video (yet going back to the menu the graphics appear, and after a restart the same video plays properly). Recently I've even had the outline of the main menu (the lines that surround the menu) appearing without any words. I have from time to time done Factory Restores, and re-updated to the latest software.

I hope it is that my unit is faulty - as I do plan to buy an updated model as soon as something becomes available. If I knew there wasn't going to be new hardware for sometime, and if I knew that a new unit would solve my problems then I would buy the current 160GB model. But because a new model seems long overdue, I'll keep waiting.

I would LOVE a consumer-oriented, scalable, energy-efficient NAS solution from Apple.

If you're putting the Apple TV to good use, then you will eventually need TB's of storage space for all the video you download.

While internal disks are getting large, a product with multiple bays for expanded storage is the ideal solution, first for scalability, second for redundancy and third for energy-efficiency because such a device would typically use less power than leaving your computer on all the time.

Picture four 1-TB drives in as many hard drive bays, backing up your computers via Time Capsule and serving as the primary location of your home computers' iTunes libraries (backing up content on seperate disks and serving content to your Apple TV without a computer being turned on).

That said, I don't see how such a media server would make sense combining with Apple TV. I think it's more likely that the media server would either stand alone, or serve as a substitute for today's "Time Machine", with the Apple TV being completely separate.

Have you guys checked out the Hp MediaSmart Server? It's fantastic, save for it's weak iTunes features. The hardware design (4 hot-swappable HD bays, external ports for external drives, etc.) and NAS/backup capabilities are impressive!

I actually have one setup to serve all my ATV's needs. Yes, out of the box it has weak iTunes features, but after installing the full iTunes for Windows on it, it does a NICE job when linked up to my ATV. After all it's basically a pared-down headless PC with Windows Server 2003 on it. I just wish I could load TB2 on it, so I could control it via my Mac (instead of using a PC go-between).

Such as life.

This, and the fact that is forces you to use the Windows version of Itunes is what keeps me from getting one. From my experience, the windows version of Itunes is pretty much a complete mess. I use a dell slim line as my itunes server, serving the ATVs in the house. It constantly has buggy issues, freezes, needs to be restarted...etc. Itunes, running on my Macbook works practically flawlessly. Its not hard to fix the problems on the Dell, but with the HP, It would be pain to be performing "Itunes" maintenance on it all the time...

...other than that...I love the idea of the HP MSS

I'd rather that Apple let me re-download purchased content from the iTunes Store. That way I could delete the HD purchases that I'm not going to re-watch for a while and free up disk space to buy new content.

Nintendo has worked out this model quite flawlessly with the Wii. My guess, for Apple, it's not a hardware or software issue, its a licensing issue. In fact, almost all of the "issues" that holds back the Apple TV, I bet are licensing issues with the studios. That has to drive Apple nuts...

Tuesday... of March

Is there an update tomorrow?
Every Tuesday there has been an update on some product.
Apple TV's turn tomorrow.

Streaming content to iPhone or iPod Touch would be killer.

I agree. I could stream wirelessly from my PS3 to my PSP 18 months ago, why can't I stream from my Apple TV/Laptop to my iPhone ? All of a sudden you would have your entire video library at your fingertips when you are away from home, which would be a big selling point.
