How was the experience?

Did you bring the iPad to the lab/restroom or did you just leave it on your seat? :D

I flew from Detroit to Oklahoma city yesterday on Delta. Only a 2 hour flight so no bathroom breaks for me. I left my MBP at home, and it was a nice change to not have to pull my laptop out of my backpack to pass security. I watched a tv show on the plane and played a little Harbor Master HD... Of course when i got to the hotel they only had wired internet in the room so i was hosed. Figures.

LOL, I've actually thought and worried about this. I'll be taking it with me on a 14+ hour flight to Seoul in mid-May. I've already convinced myself I need to take it with me to the rest room. Don't dare leave it alone with all those jealous people.

You might even forget your in the bathroom if you get involved in a good game of harbor master.

No plane travel yet with it for me but i will be going on an 8 day cruise in two weeks. Can't wait to chill on my balcony overlooking the water and reading a book on my iPad.

Air travel

I simply put mine in the magazine holder part of the seat in front of me. Another option would be to stow it again in the carryon under the seat, I doubt your neighbors would miss someone swiping your entire carry on.

Of course, I could be wrong!

Airport Express is a handy travel companion for situations like this. Of course, there is no Airport Utility for the iPad...but I think if it's already set up correctly you should be able to just plug it in.

This is where MyWi on a jailbroken iPhone comes in. :)

I'm considering picking up a travel router just for this purpose. It looks like they are the size of a pack of cards, and sell for $50. Apple's airport express is double that, and cN't be configured via wifi as far as i know.

I would prefer to not be a pioneer however, so is anyone else using one right now? Any recommendations?

I just finished a business trip from Houston to San Jose and back..Love leaving my laptop at home.. A few observations:

- I have this sleeve case for my Ipad http://sfbags.com/products/ipad-cases/sleevecases-ipad.php. Did not need to remove it from the sleeve to go through security (did place it in a separate bin). Sleeve travels well and fits in the seat pocket infront of you.

- Started reading 1 ibook, listened to podcasts, music etc.. Still had over 75% of battery life left after 4 hours..

- This device begs to be connected all the time.. Wifi at the airports appears to be touch and go.. I've not had any issues with wifi at home..Only 9 of my 36 total apps (includes stock apps) can be used off line- like notepad etc..

- I found myself taking this with me to the hotel lounge/bar were normally I would never take a laptop..The sleeve makes this easy to do..

- Lot's of questions from aircrew members, passengers etc..

- I'm an iphone 3GS owner and have not done anything with the iphone except make calls and text over the last few days...

Bottom line- Unless I have to take my laptop on a trip it will stay home.. Goodreader makes it easy to take work docs etc...Wanting to be connected all the time I may pass this model on to my wife and get the 3G model when it comes out..I already had to instances on this trip (once in a cab) and once at the airport (spotty wifi) that 3G connectivity would have been golden...

I do also want to point out that the iPad is considered a mobile device, so it qualifies for the cheaper $8 rate with gogo inflight Internet. I enjoyed using mobile internet on two flights a week ago, and it might be because I didn't change planes, but I only was charged once vs for each segment.:)

I have a similar Waterfield sleeve for my old (circa-2000) IBM Thinkpad. It's well-designed and well-padded. But I'd think it would be a bit of overkill for the iPad. I mean the material and padding is THICK. I would think it would at LEAST double the thickness of the iPad. And they haven't changed the appearance since 2000.

It's appropriate for my chunky old Thinkpad. But I think I'd prefer something like the thin, form-fitting Tucano sleeve I have for my MacBook. Not the very thinnest one on the market, as it does have some padding.

I plan to bring the 32GB iPad with me for a week long trip to Hong Kong. Will bring the AirPort Express, so that I can utilize the hotel internet for both my iPad and iPhone 3GS.

How will you configure it on site? I also have an old AEX that I would like to use for travel with the iPad but it seems unlikely it would just work with no configuration (and would be frustrating if it required it).

We have a nice long trip to San Juan next week and both the wife and I will be bringing along the IPads. I will report back as to how it goes. We plan to watch some movies, listen to some music, read some books and lastly, surf the web at the stop overs.

I also have an older sleeve for 13" laptop. Seems like this one for the Ipad is not as thick but provides excellent protection.. This week I stowed it with my one carry-on bag which contained clothing, shoes etc.. It was nice not having to carry two bags for a change and not having to worry about the device in the larger bag because of the protection afforded by the sleeve...

Joking Right

Can someone explain further how this works?

I took this as a joke but further explanation would be:
Step 1: setup your airport on you Mac or PC at home, make sure the Ethernet port uses DHCP to connect to the internet, then proceed to make your wifi settings.
Step 2: Unplug take with you on your next trip if no wifi but wired simply plug in the airport to the ethernet jack in your hotel room, pulg it in to power and bam connect your ipad to your wifi network.
Step 3: as you travel and experience a hotel with only wired ethernet repeat step 2

Technical note you can skip step one if you don't want security as the airport will work straight out of the box.

There really isn't nothing to it. you could also use any other wifi router nothing special with the airport.

If you were joking very funny, I you were serious I hope this helps if you need more detail just ask.

Haven't been on a flight with it yet but will be in a few weeks. You know, just 3 months ago I thought how awesome and convenient it was to be able to watch movies on my iPhone on a plane. I just put it up on a little stand and sit back and enjoy the show. But now that I have the iPad, I can't imagine going back to that. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad experience but the iPad is just so, so much better.

Yup

Flew cross country. The iPad travels great. Sips battery (had 75% left after five hours of watching video). Didn't use the facilities on board so didn't face the "take it or leave it" question.

Will be moving to the 3G when it arrives, don't like worrying about wifi spots.

Flight from atl to NYC...

14.95 30 day on delta bc it's considered the smart phone plan. Not bad at all considering I'll be flying 3 more times in next 30 days 4+ hours each way

Probably one of the first iPads in flight

I flew home from Jacksonville to Seattle on April 4th and got lots of looks from other passengers. I bought the apple case and went through security taking it out of my bag and it worked just fine. I might try leaving it in my carry-on bag for my next trip.

Used it all day with two stops on the way home - connected to my sprint overdrive or the delta wifi (got a 24 hour pass for $12.95). I watched two movies, did my online grocery shopping and caught up on email. End of the very long day...still 55% battery left.

My MBP will stay home for sure now!!

Sandy

thanks--
It's exactly what I was looking for. I'll be on the road in Europe at several hotels that have ethernet but not wifi. Coupled with a VPN setup It should be just like being home.

try the apple cover and secure it with a rubber band. It should be fine.

I did mucho travel with a kindle and amazon cover. no problems

I flew to Tucson from Boston last week, with a change of planes. No Macbook Air this time, just the iPad.

I used Boingo wifi credits at the airports -- worked fine in one airport, couldn't connect in the other.

Delta in flight wifi worked great -- except Netflix streaming wouldn't work, and neither would ABC TV -- ABC said it thought I was International!

At destination, no Wifi -- but I did use my Airport Express and it worked flawlessly.

Watched a movie, read books and a magazine, played Scrabble and Plants vs Zombies, emails, general surfing, etc. iPad was amazing!

AND best of all: No need to take iPad out of carryon bag!!!!! Goes through security no questions asked, inside its sleeve, no need to take it out!!!

BTW Waterfield fans -- try the Slip Case. Thinner and lighter than their sleeves -- just the ticket!!! But on airplanes, go with the Apple case. Great stand for watching video!!!

And a great conversation starter on airplanes too -- EVERYONE around me asked me about it -- including airline workers! But no I didn't worry about it being stolen while I was out of my seat.

Will never fly with a laptop again.
