I am wondering if to buy my macbook in the store or get it online. My question is, is there tax if I order online I live in New Jersey. I am wondering becuase I read online they do! My mom is also wondering becuase when I want to get it should I order online or go right to the apple store (30 mins away) and get it right there with my student discount and free nano. What do you think I should do?

There is tax online if there is a store in your state/province, as there is.

Since there is an Apple store in New Jersey you have to pay tax online and off.

But this is just a third opinion.
I would seek a fourth.

well, if the store has it you dont have to pay shipping, and you get it right away, so thats kinda a no brainer, plus if theres any problems you can bring it right back to the store

I didn't know thats how it worked. I just ordered a MBP and I had to pay tax and theres no store in my state yet (opening next month -Kentucky-). Since there's no store should I have not had to pay tax?

WHAT!!!!!! KENTUCKY IS FINALLY GETTING AN APPLE STORE!!!!!!! This is great news, now I don't have to drive to Cincinnati. Do you happen to know which city? Ah, and I would imagine you'd have to pay sales tax anywhere that has it, no matter what method of purchase, unless it's a tax free holiday or something.

You won't pay anything for shipping even if you do order it online. As other people have said, you will pay tax either way you buy it (online or retail). I bought my iMac and did the free printer and iPod online when I bought mine with the student back to college promotion.

It is GREAT news I agree....it's gonna be in Louisville about a mile from my house! in Oxmoor Mall. I'm pretty sure it's set to open in August but i'm not 100% sure. google Louisville Apple store and you can find more info

buy it at the store, waiting for it to arrive via shipping sucks! a 30 minute drive is nothing, i do that to work every day.

we bought both online using fatwallet.com as a ref. and got around $60 cashback from each laptop.

edit : yea, we still had to pay tax. But id rather buy from apple and pay tax than some other company i'll have to fight with incase the laptops needed to be returned/exchanged.

Yeah I made my decision! I'm gonna go with my parents and get it instead of waiting to get it shipping. I'm getting the black macbook and I can't wait! Can I get a student dicount in the store? Just wondering!

Yes, just bring your student ID, that's all they need. Sometimes, they don't even ask for it, but have it just in case.

Make sure they give you an education discount, and make sure the discount can be seen on the receipt. There are other discounts that they could give you by accident and it can screw up the iPod rebate. Apple needs to see the education discount on the receipt to get the rebate. (a user in another thread had this problem)

Sales tax is leveled at a purely state level (ever noticed most states have different rates?), and Delaware, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon and Montana have no sales tax.

well, i know county by county has diffrent rates, but i thought it was all based on a 5% nation wide then the states add a penny, and then the county can add whatever...i didnt realize there were states that didnt have it at all. i guess its the state thats 5% then the county adds whatever. neato

anywhere a retailer has a "retail presence" they charge tax, and since every state has a kabillion places that sell iPods, apple charges tax in every state that has a state sales tax. there doesn't have to be an apple branded store, just a reseller of apple products.

Would you pay the tax during the 'no tax days' or no tax week that some states offer? From the store perspective or is that something one writes off later?

I've never seen a no-tax-holiday in any state I've lived in... Is this a British thing???

I was pretty sad, I live in Wisconsin and the sales tax is 5.x% but I bought my MBP in NewJersey where the sales tax is 7.x% and on a purchase this large, it really hurt.

Here in Texas..I believe our sales tax is 8.25%
