Would you pay the tax during the 'no tax days' or no tax week that some states offer? From the store perspective or is that something one writes off later?

Online, yes, in store, no.

And to whomever was asking, some states do tax free weekends in the back to school season to boost waning retail sales, in which they waive the sales tax on items up to a certain dollar amount.

where I live in VT, sales tax is 6% or 7% depending on which town you're shopping in. 5% state and 1 or 2% local.

I've never seen a no-tax-holiday in any state I've lived in... Is this a British thing???

I was pretty sad, I live in Wisconsin and the sales tax is 5.x% but I bought my MBP in NewJersey where the sales tax is 7.x% and on a purchase this large, it really hurt.

We have no tax holiday here in Georgia. It is usually the first weekend of August. You pay no tax on any educational item, which includes computers.

No... 'no tax days' equals no sales tax on various items. The store handles that later with their bookkeeping. but the consumer gets the benefit.

For example, next weekend here in TN there is no sales tax on many items, but specifically computers under $1500. There are restirctions, such as software not pre-installed, components bought separately such as ram, etc... but its pretty slick. I'm going to pick up a macbook online and will get the free iPod nano and pay no shipping and sales tax and have the student discount on top of that. Each state is a bit different, I'm sure you can google your state and sales tax free day or weekend.

Find and Apple reseller like MacZone, MacWarehouse, MacMall, MacConnection, JR Music World, B&H PhotoVideo, that is NOT based in New Jersey and they won't charge you sales tax. If the sales tax savings buying from an out-of-state Apple reseller is greater than your student discount buying from an Apple Store, then go for it.

Note that you'll get a little better deal buying from an online reseller - they usually throw in some value-added deal, like some free RAM, free software, free case, free printer, etc etc. Each store is different.

Macmall

I used Macmall.com to order my Blackbook. I paid no tax, $100 dollar rebate and a great bag for 10 bucks (after mail in rebate) if you will fill out the rebate forms you will save a lot at Macmall. If your really trying to save money you might want to get your ram at a 3rd party seller. I paid for 5 to 7 day shipping and received it in 2 days. I also got Windows XP for a discounted price. Very easy no pain solution to buying a computer.

Anybody about to buy a computer i would go with Macmall.

Hope this helps even though you've probably already bought your computer.

Well, I have to pay 7% and I'm getting mine in 3 weeks from the store in Marlton! My parents said they'll pay for whatever I'm short of! This includes accesories and other stuff! Probably gonna get a case also! I can't wait! Its gonna feel like forever!

I ordered my macbook pro online and I was very happy with what I received. Product was in perfect condition. If you can wait order online, if your antsy about getting the lappy asap then go to the store. Don't forget that awesome student discount deal!

Not only that, but many of them offer rebates.

Actually, even with a student discount from Apple it works out cheaper to buy from a reseller. Example: the base level Macbook Pro has a rebate of $150 right now. Add the amount you save by not paying sales tax, and you end up spending less money with the reseller.

Come to think of it... as long as the resellers are offering the rebates, why would anyone buy directly from Apple? What am I missing??
