I never understood the appeal of Iphone 8 (may be insurance policy last year against an expensive Iphone X). It is a tired design offering nothing meaningful above Iphone 7.

To each his own I suppose...

The only appeal the iPhone 8 has it still retains touch ID. There really wasn’t that many upgrades in terms over the iPhone 7 aside from true tone, wireless charging and I believe the stereo speakers were also increased to be 25% louder. And of course, it is discounted substantially with a more attractive price point, but still it’s fairly relative in terms of some of the technology offered with the A11 Bionic processor.

Arent you afraid of the inferior resolution of Xr compared to 8 Plus? For me is a terrible point in the new phone...

Afraid? Not at all. It’s a trade off that I’m very happy to make, especially as the lower resolution display will use less RAM and will tax the GPU to a lesser extant than a higher resolution display would. The display is still pixel doubled which to me is perfectly fine.

Let me guess, you had an iPhone 7.

Likewise, the 7 offered nothing meaningful above the iPhone 6S.

The reality is that the 8 is a better phone than the 7 was, which was a better phone than the 6S was.

I do. I am torn between 8 Plus, X and Xr.

8 Plus
+ standard 16:9 display
+ the certainty of the classic model (no hardware issues of the 1st gen products)
+ faster log-in with Touch ID
+ battery
- BIG
- second lens without OIS

X
+ smallest of the three (but still cannot use it one handed)
+ OIS on both lenses
+ deep black and with dark mode coming in the future very good battery life
+ new form factor (iOS will be evolving in favor of a new bezel-less construction)
- awful aspect ratio
- slower Face ID than Xr
- OLED is too bright

Xr
+ best Camera of the three (even with one lens there is portrait mode)
+ a good compromise in size between Plus and X
+ new form factor (iOS will be evolving in favor of a new bezel-less construction)
+ LCD instead of OLED
+ battery
- new display therefore there could be 1st gen issues
- still bigger than X

Good comparison. I'm trying to make the same choice. I've been upgrading every 2 years since the iPhone 4 - like clockwork - and I've got a 7 now. This is the first time I can remember actually struggling with my decision. I've never considered a year-old model before, but I guess the X seemed a little ahead of its time. So, it's still in the running. 8+ has the advantage of being the most inexpensive option available to me (I mean, of the models I'm interested in), so I have to at least consider it.

I'm leaning towards the Xr, because it seems to have the best combination of features/tradeoffs (at least, for my purposes). I'd really like to have the new camera and associated features (Smart HDR), and the latest processor. Battery life is important to me too. The negatives (i.e. thicker bezels, LCD vs OLED, lower resolution, single camera) aren't deal breakers to me. But I think I have to see the Xr in person before making a final decision.

The Max is not worth it's expensive price.
The OLED screen (in my opinion) is inferior to the 8 plus screen.
Touch ID is nicer (in my opinion) than Face ID.
The 8 Plus (or refurb 7 Plus) is the best phone to get this year (in my opinion).

But personally I'm sticking it out another year or longer. My 6 Plus on iOS 9.3.5 still runs like new. I have zero reason to upgrade it except for the sometimes irritating RAM issue these phones have.

My sentiments exactly. Just got my 8 plus to replace my 6 plus this week. Could not be happier. Between face ID and OLED, I didn't want to risk my eye sight.

So many people have bought them that they’re back-ordered with Verizon. There are none in stock anywhere around me either.

On iphone 7 plus :)
My point is apple could have easily offered Xr and Xs last year (with 7 as backup for touch id fans).. Instead, for fourth year in a row they released the same design..
In terms of incremental design, 7 to 8 is the worst!

I had this dilemma last week order a 8 plus or wait and order 2 xs maxes...I chose to order the 8 plus red and one xs max...the discount I got for the 8 plus was way too good to pass up and it's miles better than the 6 plus that was on the account. Ppl are putting the 8 plus down when it's still a perfectly capable iPhone..it has the same internals of a X after all..just not the weird aspect ratio of the X screen camera and in some instances faceid has been an annoyance on the X I had before the xs max
