Anyone else feel this iPad release is the oddest?...

I mean, the 2015 Pro was announced in detail and specifics and really shined...
Then the 2017 Pros were highlighted a bit, with most features pretty much talked about up front or on the Apple website, **no hidden crap, no exception models with more RAM than the others, no confusion on IF the iPad has HDR support, portrait mode camera abilities, or if OIS is actually gone, plus they had leather and polyurethane colorful Smart Covers which rocked and allowed more personalization.
But now we have these really strange smart folio cases that we don’t even know how they connect, if they’re lined with microfiber, how the keyboard really works, etc, etc.
While watching the keynote I was pumped by the features shown and it seemed like Apple was super excited and knocked it out of the park... but it still felt kind of rushed.
And to top off the oddness, all these weird geekbench scores show 4gb and 6GB options (But no confirmation on what anything really means except 1TB models were the ones tested.) of course we don’t know much
But the lack of info on the speaker volume increase, screen tech, and the lack of info about the new “revolutionary” cases made this particular release feel fragmented and half-baked almost.
*I may be the only one who thinks this, but I thought I’d check. lol

From my understand the back connector is what the folio case connects to. So it doesnt add bulk by using the usb-c port.
I feel like this iPad is the first real decent iPad in a long long time.

I don’t understand how you think the release is Rushed based on marketing material. There is nothing rushed about the hardware and its features (based on what we know so far) or the main accessory ecosystem around it (eg New Apple Pen).

I’m in a similar boat in that I really dig the new hotness, but I just picked up an iPad Pro 10.5 256GB w/cellular used with ASK and pencil for $500 at the end of August and it totally fills my current needs.

I do want to see if the MBP’s USB-C to USB-A, power and HDMI adapter will work with the new iPad Pro though.

If I was still on the 9.7" iPP then I'd deffo be going for the new 11". However, I have a 10.5" and TBH the jump from 9.7 to 10.5 was very significant last year, along with ProMotion and all the other improvements, therefore I'm staying put this year.

And if you want to remove the smart cover you lose the back protection, which you are forced to have if you want the Apple KB/Covers this time round.

I don't know, I seemed to know what I was getting prior to ordering, aside from the portfolio, but that looks pretty simple to me. These iPad's have 4GB of RAM, the extra 2 is just to help manage the TB option. They will all functionally be the same though.

This is exactly how I feel. So I would get Face ID. Both my 10.5 and second gen 12.9 are both insanely fast so the only reason to upgrade would be to keep up with the Jones’s. If Verizon would start a yearly iPad program like they do with the iPhone that may be a different story..

I get that there are some weird questions and gotchas. HDR was highlighted on the last iPP but now all mention of it is removed. The difference in RAM in confusing because Apple refuses to really talk about memory in iOS devices. But I think it is a very solid release (we'll see when they start arriving). I'm not very interested in the keyboard or stock cases so I can't comment there. I do think the full back cover is kind of nice. Wondering what third parties will do with the moved smart connector.

I’m getting iPad Air 1 vibes

I know it’s beastly A12X but it just feels hollow for what it offers that *i* would care about, a cosmetic release, especially for the price.

Magnetic Apple Pencil cool but don’t use my pencil much anyways

Folio style
Smart Keyboard cool but I use silicone back on my 2nd gen 12.9 and don’t wanna shell out for another Smart Keyboard

Slimmer bezels cool and needed but still same screen size and my particular panel is a beaut.


USB-c genuinely don’t care I have a million lightning cables and a few fast chargers with usb-c to lightning. Nice direction but usb-c is a stiff cable not as good as lightning for using while charging Imo. More
Practical on a laptop that moves around less

No headphone jack genuinely not a fan. Don’t care on iPhones but on tablets and computers sometimes I just wanna pop headphones in for a quick video and back to business. Don’t particularly enjoy syncing AirPods for a quick listen.

Physical Update = 4 years
Major Update =2 years
Mid Update =1 year
This iPad Pro is the 4 year Major Update. We scrapped the old Air 2 body finally.
And yes just like the 9.7" iPad Pro 2016 had only 2GB RAM when the 12.9" had 4GB RAM
This year. The larger models possibly all 12.9 will have 6GB RAM and the 11" just 4GB RAM
They did say directly they want more people buying the larger sizes.
So you aren't shocked
Next years iPad Pros will have OLED Displays Amazing Colors HDR10 and Dolby Vision support. Which was taken from the 2018 models only to be hyped up for next years. Because the Mid cycle 1 year refresh is always in the history of iPad features 1 major thing and thats a new Display.
Last years 10.5" was an odd jump because Samsung Makes a 10.5" OLED Display they wanted to use but could not get everything like 120Hz to work in time.
Also it will cost $200 More so everyone who think $799 is high next years OLED model will be an extra $150 ish on top of $799.

I'm pretty sure all of the new Pro's have 4GB of RAM. The extra 2 in the TB models is just to help manage the additional storage. At the least, just the TB models have 6GB of RAM, 11 or 12.9 doesn't matter in this respect.

I agree I thought it was a great soft release... and I'm not enticed in the least by these new iPad Pros.

i think the root cause for a lot of stirrings around this release is simply pricing. If the pricing were the same as the 2nd gen Pro devices and accessories, there would only be the "standard" grumbling that accompanies every update/release.

But the expanded and increased pricing structure is causing some people to have to THINK (or at least think more) about their purchases this time around. That's causing some angst. They're having to think a bit longer and harder about what they actually use their iPads for (compared to what the device is capable of).

Having some on the sidelines claiming, "you don't like the prices because you are poor!" simply adds to that.

Meh, Apple rarely gives details on accessories unless they’re something brand new. And they never disclose how much RAM are in iOS devices.

I read it's something to do with management of the controller or moving around all of that data. I am no expert, but just going off what some of Steve Troughton Smith has said on Twitter.
