I've learned over the years. With Apple it's best to preorder now. Then return if you don't like. I always preorder. I never return.
I don't know, I seemed to know what I was getting prior to ordering, aside from the portfolio, but that looks pretty simple to me. These iPad's have 4GB of RAM, the extra 2 is just to help manage the TB option. They will all functionally be the same though.
Why, how long is the wait normally
Same. They dropped the weight, thinner, and reduced the size going edge to edge. Winning all the way around. Please do the same with the phones!
^^^this^^^I think the issue got to do with some important details not being fleshed out properly unlike in previous iPad Pro launches?
It wasn’t rushed in the sense of it finally being announced that it existed, but the keynote felt like the wanted to breeze right through, and part of me feels they could have used 5 more minutes to explain stuff about accessories and the relocation of the smart connect for instance, talk about the video HEVC and talk about better HDR content or something more than “it’s our best Liquid Retina display ever,” that was all they said, then they moved on super fast. Even though apple doesn’t talk RAM with iPads, I feel in this instance they should have cleared up the 1TB or something, just a little... wishful thinking on the last one, but still.I don’t understand how you think the release is Rushed based on marketing material. There is nothing rushed about the hardware and its features (based on what we know so far) or the main accessory ecosystem around it (eg New Apple Pen).
Apple works in cycles, its only weird if you can't see their pattern.
Physical Update = 4 years
Major Update =2 years
Mid Update =1 year
This iPad Pro is the 4 year Major Update. We scrapped the old Air 2 body finally.
And yes just like the 9.7" iPad Pro 2016 had only 2GB RAM when the 12.9" had 4GB RAM
This year. The larger models possibly all 12.9 will have 6GB RAM and the 11" just 4GB RAM
They did say directly they want more people buying the larger sizes.
So you aren't shocked
Next years iPad Pros will have OLED Displays Amazing Colors HDR10 and Dolby Vision support. Which was taken from the 2018 models only to be hyped up for next years. Because the Mid cycle 1 year refresh is always in the history of iPad features 1 major thing and thats a new Display.
Last years 10.5" was an odd jump because Samsung Makes a 10.5" OLED Display they wanted to use but could not get everything like 120Hz to work in time.
Also it will cost $200 More so everyone who think $799 is high next years OLED model will be an extra $150 ish on top of $799.
I’m starting to question if they really actually did have it. I think the 10.5” had software that helped achieve an HDR experience, but not HDR10, but now that iOS 12 is out Apple removed any mention of HDR on the old 10.5” and the new iPads... but their mentioning of HEVC or H.265 means 4K playback is possible.Darn, I I didn’t realize that the new iPad Pros lost HDR10 and Dolby Vision support! I love that feature with my 10.5 inch iPad Pro.
Holy crap—YES! I was so thankful ordering was the day of. I was also thankful I jumped on it right away, because none of them have launch day availability anymore. What I liked best is being able to order the iPad Pro of my choice during the day and not at 3am.
Other than that is was a great soft release.
That was so annoying but they kind of screwed up the iPad 3. Internals couldn’t power that Retina display properly. It ran hot and did not age well. iPad 4 should have been iPad 3.The only thing that has come to mind for me is this weird feeling they release an updated iPad Pro in 6 months. Happened with the iPad 3 to 4 I think. It was many years ago. People were pretty upset about that. Not saying this will happen with the new iPad 2018, just a weird feeling.
I agree. I think the next iteration will give iPad Air2 vibes. I think we’re in for a ram increase and a 20-30% processor speed jump next model.I’m getting iPad Air 1 vibes
I know it’s beastly A12X but it just feels hollow for what it offers that *i* would care about, a cosmetic release, especially for the price.
Magnetic Apple Pencil cool but don’t use my pencil much anyways
Folio style
Smart Keyboard cool but I use silicone back on my 2nd gen 12.9 and don’t wanna shell out for another Smart Keyboard
Slimmer bezels cool and needed but still same screen size and my particular panel is a beaut.
USB-c genuinely don’t care I have a million lightning cables and a few fast chargers with usb-c to lightning. Nice direction but usb-c is a stiff cable not as good as lightning for using while charging Imo. More
Practical on a laptop that moves around less
No headphone jack genuinely not a fan. Don’t care on iPhones but on tablets and computers sometimes I just wanna pop headphones in for a quick video and back to business. Don’t particularly enjoy syncing AirPods for a quick listen.
Faceid On a tablet. I feel similar to headphone jack. Don’t think it’s gonna bode real well for a tablet or make as much sense. Even being able
To scan horizontal or vertical

Again, HDR is cool to have, and I’m not happy it isn’t talked about or may be missing now, but HDR is truly enjoyed with a bigger and brighter display.
You honestly need 1000+ nits brightness and high end LCD or OLED displays to really notice it. But theoretically a software update could allow some HDR-like features.
The biggest thing to remember is Apple advertised HDR last year, but did not say HDR10 or Dolby Vision (HDR10 is different and way better than just HDR.) There are 8-bit HDR panels v 10-bit. The 8-bit are not very different than standard displays at all.
*I only know this as I worked selling TVs for the past few years, and folks on here helped correct me on certain tech, so I did some research. lol
I learn a lot here TBH. lol
Kallum.
When I placed my order finally after work. I am a teacher, and it is frowned upon for teachers to do personal business during school time. The date had slipped to 13-16th for delivery. But I am now having second thoughts about it and wondering about canceling. I currently have a first generation 12.9 iPad Pro and have enjoyed it. It is having some trouble lately, which is why I initially wanted to get this new one. I don’t know, just the longer wait is giving me more time to reconsider it. Apple said they could give me a $50 discount, but I would have to cancel my current order and place a new one which would be even later. Not a good idea in my opinion. Just wondering if there is anyone else having second thoughts. Why, how long is the wait normally
I actually hate that now it’s forced on you. It makes using the dock a pita. Should have just left it with extended swip up brings up cc and home button stays as app switcher/home.Even with ios 12 having swipe up gestures?
The original iPad was the worst. It lost support after 2 iOS updates and ran like crap.iPad Air 1 vibes? Lol, no.
Air 1, along with the 6 Plus, were the worst iOS devices I’ve ever owned. They ran poorly out of the gate due to being 64bit and starved of ram. Funny how the 32bit iPad 3 gets a lot of (justifiable) flack, yet it was a LOT more stable than the Air 1. It was slow and the GPU wasn’t up to snuff, but it worked and didn’t constantly flush things out of memory. Air 1 and 6 Plus, pausing a podcast, doing a couple of things, then resuming from the CC equivalent (can’t remember the name) often defaulted back to MUSIC playback as podcasts had been flushed. Terrible experience, never mind the constant Safari tab refreshes. None of this happened with the iPad 3.
Anyway, 4gb is mid life ram wise, be a couple of years before that isn’t the standard.
Saying that, I’m buying the 6gb ram 1TB version. I skip multiple iPads these days and being in at the start of a new highest RAM allotment = maximum longevity in iOS devices.

True, but the iPhone 4 launched only 2 months later and both ran A4 but the iPhone 4 had twice the ram. I think that’s kinda sad. Also the only new features in the iPad 2 was the thinner body, cameras, A5, and gyroscope. The original iPad had cut outs in its body when opened up that showed front camera and gyroscope slots that weren’t used. Kinda felt like Apple did it on purpose.Fair point re iPad 1, but in my mind I give them a pass for that as it was the first version. iPad Air 1 was the fifth iPad, by which point there’s no excuse. 64bit & 1gb RAM should never have happened, period.
I mean, my 6 Plus was better than my 3G by any metric you apply, but that’s not saying a great deal, and for Apple to release such a gimped device in its EIGHTH iteration was unforgivable.
Yes yes, I’m sure there’ll be replies saying their 6 Plus and Air 1 is still running like a dream(!) but that was categorically not the case for a lot of people. There is some extremely whiney nitpicking about everything Apple, or indeed everything else, but in these cases it was justified imo. When something is fundamentally less stable than its predecessor due to hardware, something has gone wrong.

They probably did it to get to the $500 price point. Since other slates cost more than $1K (I had a Windows convertible that was $1.5K), I think it was a good call to drive mass adoption.True, but the iPhone 4 launched only 2 months later and both ran A4 but the iPhone 4 had twice the ram. Same here.iPad Pro this year finally has me interested in upgrading from my iPad Air 2.
This is how I feel going from an Air2.
