Based on the AW 4 beta, still no new watch faces (kaleidoscope doesn't count). Anyone else frustrated that Apple refuses to include some nice looking watch faces like their competitors? Some of us have been waiting a long time for these, and it's really too bad that this seemingly simple request isn't honored.

Well there is a Siri watch face and Toy Story watch face ...

Most people are probably good and comfortable with the watch faces they have set up already. Siri, IMO, is by far the best watch face.

Others might be comfortable with the Watch face that are currently offered, but many would like to see expanded Watch faces offering more diversity. The current Watches face are great, but toy story, numerals, Minnie Mouse are not exactly fitting for most wanting to see elegant Watch faces or mature Watch faces if you will.

I have said it before, I think Apple really needs to allow developers to have access to expand the watch faces and/or develop an Apple Watch face store. That would be a monumental leap for the Watch if possible.

I’m going to assume that Apple doesn’t trust developers to come up with good watch face designs.

IMO, the Apple Watch is a beautifully designed product, and maybe one of Apple’s best ever designs, so why ruin that with a bad watch face? Sure, there could be a some great designs, but the average consumer probably doesn’t really know what a good watch face looks like.

Some of, in fact a lot of, the Gear S3 third-party face offerings are just putrid. I agree that they should open it up, but it would likely be heavily monitored. I doubt Apple wants a customer giving the Apple Watch advertisement on their wrist to other potential customers while rocking an ugly watch face that does not represent what Apple would want.

Lol, all of those Rolex watch faces I see on those Gear watches

If this truly was Apple's attitude towards developers, then this would be a poor practice. Apple has commented on how important there relationship is pivotal with developers to enhance the Operating System through out many of their products, (i.e iPad, Touchbar on MacBook Pro, applications, iPhone, etc. )

At one point or another, Apple should expand to allow developers to further the potential of the Watch. I do believe Apple wants the Watch to have a positive emphasis On keeping it classy and sophisticated. And not all Watch faces would likely be in line with Apple's preferences. I do think some Watch faces that are explicit should be reviewed before releasing for obvious reasons.

As for the current Watch faces, they are excellent. Solar, time lapse, jelly fish/butterflies are brilliantly executed. But they are limited and more elegant Watch faces would be much appreciated.

I think the ratio of good delevoper watch faces to bad developer watch faces would be about 10/90 ... I’d also think it would be really tough to create unique face without the advantage of material and textures.

To reference the Gear watch faces again, part of why they look so bad is because of the faux material, textures and shadowing that are being used. You can’t really recreate a true mechanical watch face digitally without it looking bad. That’s why I think Apple provides likely the best alternative, and it’d be hard for developers to create something unique that Apple isn’t already doing themselves.

I really don’t buy the ”people are happy with the current offerings”

Come on! Even my mum asks for more watch faces and number one ask is the elegant styles - I use mine all day, every day which also means a lot the of time in suit/shirt office attire and therefore Mickey, Toy Story or something like that doesn’t really match

I was very disappointed with the Siri, Toy Story & kaleidoscope faces.

I mean, is that all they could come up with...REALLY!

Surely some new options for the current faces could've been added, complications could've been updated, more colour options, some digital faces, it could be so much better but no...they give us ****ing Buzz Lightyear FFS!

A) what’s wrong with the current complication offerings, that they need updating?
B) color options match whatever band color offerings they sell
C) what specific style of face would you like to see that is not already being offered?

A) Nothing's wrong just some subtle changes would've been nice. It seems what we look at most on these watches, the face, hasn't really been updated on.
B) Well I usually use the black strap or the anthracite Nike strap and I cant say I'm feeling some of the recent coloured straps such as Flamingo, Pink Sand or Pollen. Some coloured straps don't even match the colour of the same name on the watch.
C) Flip clock, Swiss railway clock, digital (as I already mentioned), binary, dot matrix, numerals. Even better options for faces to use with our own pics would've been welcomed.

I think what it really comes down to in retrospect is expanding the Apple Watch faces allow for further customization.

Apple consistently releases new bands at least twice a year for the Apple Watch, which can be somewhat more easy of a process by using a mold and adding a die to a colored fluerastamer band. But adding watch faces May take some more time for development, but I think once a year to release watch faces, and a few at that, really seems to limit the watch experience.

I can appreciate the various watch updates throughout the year to improve the watchOS and stability, but I would really like to see some form of watch faces being updated as they do the Watch accessories to the watch as well.

It's funny that you mention that. A lot of watch faces are copies of Rolex, Tissot, Patek Phillipe, Omega, etc... but I doubt Apple would allow copyrighted material into the app store. So you can count stuff like that out.

Additionally, a format would have to be followed so that watch faces fit a certain mold, with identical placing for complications. It's not out of the realm of possibility for Apple to allow customized watch faces, they are just to nazi-like on control over what they want to allow.

Kind of like not allowing us to put icons where we want on the screen. This takes no effort on Apple's part, yet for 10 years we have been stuck with rows of icons we can't do anything with!

I don’t want custom watch faces, I do certainly think Apple ought to add more (and the ones they’ve added are great, Numerals is my daily driver) but I don’t trust 3rd party developers to do it right

but you should know I only buy 1st party stuff most of the time, watch bands absolutely must be Apple! So I am “biased” but it’s still my opinion, it’s just a strong one

I beg to differ. I have seen some truly talented artists create amazing watch faces via LUA coding on both Android Wear and now the Gear S3, via porting.
A vast majority are crappy looking, but don't discount what some people can do.

But besides all this, what's wrong with having the option to customize. I really have never understood this mentality with some people. It's like you have a hatred for customizing things you own? Why not make things more personal? I mean, is your car dull and bland?

I probably wouldn't bother with custom faces either, as this has been my watch face from day 1 and will continue to be. But, having more options is never a bad thing imo.

Lol you do not know me at all because my truck is very much personalized.

Here’s the thing, we are just talking about a watch face - something that gives me a few bits of information throughout the day. Can we not take into account that I’m fine with Apple’s offerings before assuming I hate customization? ... can we also talk about how you make a small personal attack on me, then immediately tell another user that you would not use custom faces because you like the stock on you’re using. Pot, meet kettle.

If I need to post a picture of my dull/bland truck to meet your satisfaction, you can let me know.

I would love to see your truck all decked out. :)

I am someone who wants more options for faces and I always assumed everyone did, but that doesn’t seem to be the case and that is perfectly fine. I use modular the most and I have the Hermès Watch along with a series 0.

I think it would be great if apple offered watch faces to purchase. Even if they are the only ones allowed to make them. They could charge $5 or more and I think a few million people would buy 1-2 if they were good. A quick $50mm for apples bottom line but they probably don’t care. :)

You don't want third party watch faces - good news is that if they are ever released, you'll be free to not install any of them. But just because you don't want something doesn't mean others don't want it. I never wanted a background image on my iPhone, but Apple still enabled it. Now I still have my plain black background and I'm happy, and others now have the choice to have a plain black background or a photo of whatever they want, and they too are happy.

As for the quality, iTunes already has quality control for the apps that run on the watch, why not the watch faces as well?

It is not about quality (or lack of) but rather about control. The Hermès Apple Watch would not have been worth what it was if the custom watch face could have been downloaded for $1 from iTunes.

I used to care; lately, however, I'm not bothered about the watch faces provided.

A bit hard to buy that gorgeous leather straps as a 1$ download though - plenty of value without the special watch face.

And likewise with the Nike. I didn't go for the Nike one because I wanted stainless steel, but use the app and the Nike strap. Let me use the watch face man

I think that's how I feel now, lol.

Of course, I'd like to have more options, but honestly, I find that the current selection offers (at least for me) enough variety if I need it.

But I've been using the modular face for so long, that its become my default.

Maybe if I switched faces more often, I'd notice the lack of options, but I'm fine for the most part.

I will say the original Watch faces are excellent. I think they are very well executed and offer something for everyone. They don't bore me at all, I would just like to see additional faces. But complications and changing colors is another nice tuning option.
