I find it irritating that in Apps in Lion (i.e Safari) when you press cmd-q and quit an app, the app reopens with the windows that were open previously. Now you have to press Option-Command-Q to close windows and open with a new window on start. There is no option in the menu, you can only use a shortcut. What was Apple thinking?

Agree. It gets really annoying. I have a homepage for a reason. Don't like this new Safari feature.
Huh, haven't noticed that. I've only been using chrome on my Lion machine since Safari seemed so buggy for the time being.

Really?? My Chrome is acting super weird. I can't quit very easily or at all and end up force quitting it. It just closes the window and hangs when I cmd+Q or right click quit. Also my about Google Chrome says I am updated to the latest version of 11 but it has the beta tag next to it still.
Edit: Just reinstalled Chrome, left the application support folder though, now the beta tag is gone in the about, but the build number is the same. Chrome quits normally now, but when I start it, it opens up from a minimized position. Like a windows appears in my dock minimized and then maximizes out to my homepage. Very strange.
Edit 2: Deleted application support. Everything is fixed now.

I will actually enjoy this, as I often close my web browser and want to come back and have my windows open from last session.
I had no idea people actually used home pages. I've used SAFT, SafariStand and extensions all this time to have this feature. Trust me, you will grow to love it after the first crash with 18 open tabs 
It could be useful, but it is slow. I like the speed of opening to a blank page without having to wait for a home page or the previous pages to load.

Can't you just use History > Restore All Windows From Last Session?
found out in another thread just use cmd option Q and that closes all windows and opens up to top sites, homepage, or whatever you had before the update
Here's the thing though: in Lion and beyond, you're not supposed to be quitting apps - you're supposed to be closing windows. Close all the app's windows and that's it, quitting is an "extreme" measure.
It sounds odd but it makes sense after a while (and maybe a reading of Raskin's The Humane Interface) - I shouldn't care what's open or closed, when I want to go to Safari I'll either click a window or its dock icon.

I've had those exact problems with Chrome. I've been using Firefox lately which seems to be stable.
Sounds really annoying, I hope this doesn't end up in the final version of Lion.
it's one of the main and promoted new features of Lion tho "autosave" everything is supposed to continue where u left off. same happens with textedit for example, if u write something but didn't mean to save it and quit textedit, open it again and the text u never saved is still there
Don't close the application. Use Cmd-W to close the window and Cmd-N or click on the application icon to open a new window to its home page.
With virtual memory and behaving applications (that use no CPU when they aren't active) there is no reason to close the application. Closing applications is so 20th Century!

Yep, and I would have 172 icons in the Dock/AppSwitcher, because I haven't closed a single application since my last reboot. Until you run out of RAM... then it's not so extreme is it?
I realize that Lion essentially preemptively pages out closed (not quit) applications, but that just uses more HDD space.
i think lion makes sure there's enough ram left for "everything" like the iPhone and once it gets critical its gonna close those apps u haven't used for a while. at least thats what i remember reading
This is not a feature of Safari. It is a feature of Lion. I too believe that it would be better to not save the state as a standard, or at least have the option to change this behavior.

Option+Command-q , quits the apps without saving the current state. Safari won't re-open your tabs from the previous session, Terminal won't display your last session text in gray.This is not a feature of Safari. It is a feature of Lion.
