I don't see the point of not using it, and I'm not sure how it locks you in.

Anyway every Android user technically does the same so it's nothing unheard of.

I used to use it but after waiting year after year to finally make it easier to mass delete iMessage attachments and still no changes in this regard, I recently had enough and moved the few people I wrote with on iMessage in the first place, back to WhatsApp.

I personally have not sent an SMS since Nokia was a thing.

There is no reason to disable iMessage / RCS, even when you don‘t use it. The alternative of someone trying to reach you that way is SMS, which no one should actively use if there is an alternative.

iMessage is encrypted and usable when you dont have cell service, compared to SMS. Compared to apps, the only negative would be if everyone is not there to communicate with. If they are, not using the service is no big deal. It's just one option to communicate.

If you don't have cell service, you don't have iMessage either, unless you're talking about wifi? I've been in plenty of remote areas where SMS would go though, but a call won't and data is unavailable.

Satellite messaging makes this less of an issue.

Yes, talking about wifi access. Cruise ships for example, have cell service, but too expensive so everyone just uses wifi. I should have clarified.

Yes, literally everyone outside of the US.

The messages app is just used as a 2fa receiver.

I live in the US and outside of two or three people, all people I message are also in the US. Anyone else is on facebook messenger. I don’t call anyone using it, just send messages.

So you don't feel locked into an ecosystem when using the messaging system of an app?

No, and I don’t even think of the ecosystem. With the exception of one of my brothers and maybe two other people, everyone I associate with on a regular basis uses an iPhone and the default Messages app. That’s just how it is.

I don’t use it much despite really liking it. I’m in the UK though and everyone just uses WhatsApp because it cross platforms and universal

That’s great….. But my comment was directed to the OP who says feeling locked into an ecosystem when using iMessage, that’s why he uses the messaging system of apps.

I can barely use any other messaging app besides iMessage/Facetime.
I also have WhatsApp but I rarely log in to it.

I use iMessage for texts between me and my wife and some family members.

WhatsApp is the primary app for texting with friends and work colleagues though as most use Android phones here in Europe. It has better group messaging functions and generally looks better. I hate how iMessage looks when you reply to messages within threads, puts me off using it for groups.

I honestly don't care enough to care whether i use it don't ? ?? I type a message and someone gets it. I don't care if it's imessage,a rcs, sms, carrier pigeon or smoke signals ? What difference does it actually make ?

Outside US, many are using different messaging apps (in EU, WhatsApp is the most popular). But I can’t see a valid reason to disable it. I use it sometimes with family members.
The fact you are even mentioning SMS is disturbing: is someone really still using that prehistoric messenger?

I live in Switzerland and I have only exactly 2 people writing to me on iMessage. The others are all using WhatsApp or Telegram.

I dont use it at all, despite owning iPhones since the 3G and multiple iPads, MacBooks, HomePods, watches etc.
It's simply because quite a lot of my contacts are using WhatsApp and I dont want to switch messengers for several contacts. Besides, I am using Windows a lot and WhatsApp has become pretty good at supporting multiple plattforms these days.
