I dont use it at all, despite owning iPhones since the 3G and multiple iPads, MacBooks, HomePods, watches etc.
It's simply because quite a lot of my contacts are using WhatsApp and I dont want to switch messengers for several contacts. Besides, I am using Windows a lot and WhatsApp has become pretty good at supporting multiple plattforms these days.
I stopped using WhatsApp when I noticed they’re sharing the contact info with Facebook. They bought a great app and made it all kinds of sneaky.

UK here. We just use WhatsApp everywhere. I barely get any iMessage things other than from the ex wife.

I think it really depends on what messenger tool that people around you like to use. If there's no one using and not willing to try iMessage, then there's no need to drag someone to use it with you.

I have several friends on iMessage that originally chat on WhatsApp or Telegram. Also all my family use iPhone, but they just keep using WhatsApp and don't want to use another message tool.

UK here, use iMessage everyday, whatsapp too, have single chats and group chats in both with friends and family.

Can use one more then the other on one day and vice versa the next.

I've always used the Messages app way before iMessage was a thing.

I never really used to bother with it, but since getting my whole family on iOS its been a nicer way to stay in touch than using WhatsApp. I find being able to pick up messages on my iPad or Mac to be very useful.

I also use it to talk to my 3 iPhone owning friends. Everyone else I know is on Android so WhatsApp is a necessity. UK btw.

what i don't understand is what difference does it make to you if your friends is on android as to whether you use imessage or not? My family has androids and i still message back and forth using imessage on my iphone. i don't have whats app on my phone. Reading posts here it seems that unless you have whats app apple people cant message android people ? what am i missing

If you use iMessage to message your Android friends, unless your carrier supports RCS, it will revert to SMS. Which means you will be using an unencrypted, archaic protocol, with no picture support (or only at a very low resolution). I haven't used SMS in many years and for sure won't start doing that again.

Also, iMessage is missing a lot of features that people like to use and are used to.

hmmm.. yes. sending sms when no imessage available no problem with that it works fine. Been doing it for years.

As for archaic, unencrypted who cares -- it works? I guess if someone wants to snoop what time we are meeting for lunch etc they can be my guest, perhaps even join us.

Sure, a stick shift car also works, but I'm not interested in driving it if there's newer technology. And as I said: it doesn't work for pictures, group chats, reactions, tons of features people need. That's why I stick to other platforms that offer this to everyone, not just to Apple users.

interesting. Well all my cars are 'stick' or manual so that makes no difference. Also I don't need or use any of those features so I guess I must be an outlier then. Carry on folks.

So when you get a passcode for 2fa, or you get a tracking link for a package, or your doctor sends you an appt reminder, this all comes in via text and you often have to confirm with a 'Y' you do this in whats app ? how does that work ? All this happend in imessage for me i don't have any other messing app installed.

I’m with @macjaffa on this one. At least privately, I mostly (but not exclusively) use iMessage since it works fine for what I use it for, short messages. Emojis instead of reactions and low res pics works fine too.

It is convenient and universal, even if the functionality may be limited depending on what the other end supports. Also, as @macjaffa pointed out, some services only work with SMS.

Occasionally I use Messenger to stay in touch with few relatives since that is their preferred way of communication.

At corporate level I use MS Teams to communicate with my colleagues.

Yay! Imessage app users unite! I turned off emoji keyboard button. I have never used an emoji except accidentally before i removed that button.

I'm an American, so I have to use iMessage because my entire family and social circle use iMessage. I'd love to use something platform agnostic but that's just not in the cards. Cest la vie.

I'm not saying I refuse to answer/use an SMS link that comes in, that was not my point. I am talking about actual, rich conversation. Messaging takes up a big part of my day as that's how I keep in touch with people, and I want the experience to be a superb one. SMS would definitely not cover that. iMessage may, although it's still lacking and I couldn't reach all my friends (because Android).

So of course in the end it's a matter of taste. If SMS is fine for you, nobody is stopping you. But for me it just won't cut it, not even in the slightest.
