Mine does fade out too! Never noticed... never really use the mute button. Wouldn't have noticed had it not been pointed out either, it's very quick.

I got an intel iMac and it definatly fades out and I have noticed it before.
Feels kind of like lag but I guess it is a nice touch instead of fast cut off.
