Hey Guys. It seems that alot of people are still having QC issues well after the intel switch. Does anyone else feel reluctant to shell out 3K for a new machine under these circumstances? When can I expect this situation to improve?

I'm particularly hesitant because I live in Canada and the only apple store in my area is 300 km away and the staff there are pretty much incompetent (They couldn't install my friend's airport card, something which they did instore in Texas). Anyway, it would be a pain dealing with the staff, commuting, and attempting to get anything fixed.

You do realize that 99% of the machines never have problems, right? If you go by the forums, you're going to get a skewed perspective because people only come here and post if they have problems. Nobody here ever posts that they got a perfect computer.

No - I have not had a single issue. You are getting a false read if you are using MB's as your source. A considerable number of the posts are false.

Thanks for the advice guys, consider this thread closed. I'll be sure to buy a MBP well after its intro, this seemed to work when I bought my PB.

I don't understand why it's so difficult for some people to realize that a handful of people with problems on an internet message board does not equal some major QC problem at Apple.

I understand why- when the forum threads are chock full of bad issues it would be easy for some people to jump to the conclusion that QC is a problem.

There have been so many "documented" issues that do seem to be more of a problem now a days- but then again it is easier to "document" issues with so many more people connected to the net and using these forums.

Visit a forum centered around any product - regardless of brand - and I guarantee you'll find people reporting problems. Sad, but true.

People complaining will always be over represented in posts but that by itself isn't enough to prove there are not QC issues.

The ad/pr agency i work with has had a lot of trouble with macbooks (14 in rotation, 9 have had to have work on them). Considering that they were not bought at the same time (some are core duos, some C2d) i'd say that is a pretty big problem. Our ibooks and powerbooks never had this many HW issues.

Apple's QC has been @#$% for a long time. Remember the white spots on the display of the first AL PBs? Or the horizontal lines on the display of the last 15" PB revision?

Apple doesn't care for QC. Why would they? Their laptop sales are through the roof, as NPD just reported.

Hey, I can be cool and make random nonsensical comments without any actual facts to back it up for the purpose of spreading FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) tooooo! Just gimme a second...err...grr...*grunt...No, I guess you've got me beat. I just can't stoop to that level.

Anywho, sarcastic comments aside, here's what sensible forumgoers will tell you (as they already have). It's a support forum; you're gonna see a lot of complaining about bugs, hardware problems, random faults, and the like! No getting away from it! And if you keep browsing the forum, guess what...you're gonna see even more complaints! Why, do you say? Because people are much more likely to come post when they have a problem that they're trying to find a solution to rather than when they don't have a problem and don't need a solution. Now, obviously, there are gonna be the gracious types that make threads like "Post here if you SR MBP is perfect!!" and that's great...but the major chunk of people with perfectly functioning machines is not gonna care to post their troubles all over the place.

Every company has duds that slip through. There is the statistical chance that you might get a Mac (or whatever hardware from any manufacturer) with a hardware fault, no denying it. It is gonna happen. That's why companies have customer support and hardware warranties. In all my years of using Apple hardware (I believe since the Performa series), I have never had a hardware failure. That seems like pretty good quality control, since I'm typically unlucky and the odds would have to be phenomenal for that to happen. :)

I'd never be quite as cool as you are. Almost every time Apple comes out with a new revision of the laptop and iMac line there are a boatload of problems and complaints. Take a look at, say, Toshiba's laptop support forums, and you're not gonna find such quantity of complaints.

Personally, I haven't had any problems with my Apple hardware either in the 4 years that I'm using Apple, but that doesn't mean a thing.

I wasn't aware that a groundbreaking name in innovation like Toshiba (*cough*) had multitudes of sites and support forums dedicated to support and discussion like Apple does...

You have to admit that Apple has a bit of a zealous fanbase that likes to set up easy-to-access, readily available, and much in supply resources like Mac Forums that someone like Toshiba lacks. Obviously you're going to see a lot of poor reports about hardware on a support site.

Not to mention that I'd be willing to bet that at least 1/3 of all the supposed problems on this forum actually have nothing to do with the Apple's quality control but rather the user's actions.

Are you sure you're an Apple user?? I sure don't get that impression from the general tone of your posts.

Sopranino

iW00t has a split personality: half the time he/she's helping someone with apparent Mac user experience, and the other half the time he/she's complaining about some failure on Apple's part. :p

When I read posts like this and I have to ask in reply "Compared to what?" I posted the following link in another forum which shows that according to PC Magazine's August 2006 Reader's Choice Notebook Survey Apple is leading the pack in customer satisfaction and the number of units needing repair. There are many more survey's out there going back many more years which show the same thing.

Also, having worked in the IT industry since the early nineties I have seen a lot of different notebooks from several of different manufacturers (Dell, HP, IBM...) and have seen a good portion of these have all kinds of issues.

So when you say "Apple's QC has been @#$% for a long time" I have to ask you in return "Compared to what"?

Well, Yes it is bad, I have had 4 bad macs in the last 8 months, and QC is bad, however I am buying another on because it gets in your blood... I have a Sony now and have no issues at all and Vista...is not bad at all either.
So yes QC is a concern....but I will again hoping for that Golden Mac;)
