It's just you. I have no issues, never have in 5+ years and I've owned every iphone and jailbroken and unlocked every model on all carriers.

You are clearly installing junk programs or programs that conflict with each other.

I don't have many Cydia apps on either device and have removed winterboard after reading that it is a cause of the 'lag'.

and here are the Cydia apps on the iphone:

FakeCarrier
SBsettings
Activator
iFile
eWifi
BBUnlocker
iCarrier
FullDrop
WifiFoFum
AppBackup
MxTube
DashboardX
iBlacklist
Springtomize 2
BootLogo
ClockHide
IconRenamer
Infiniboard
Infinifolders
NCSettings
OpenBackup
Unfold
WeatherIcon
WeeCloseApps

hmmmm....didnt realise I had so many on the phone!

although the only ones that I actually use regularly (or I guess are running in the background) are:

FakeCarrier
SBsettings
Activator
DashboardX
Springtomize 2
BootLogo
ClockHide
IconRenamer
Infiniboard
Infinifolders
NCSettings
Unfold
WeatherIcon
WeeCloseApps

After reading your list I think your definition of not many and mine are very different. best way to fond a problem is always uninstall one tweak at at time. see if it makes a difference. If you have allot sometimes it easier to start over rejailbreak and start fresh re-adding one at a time..

That's a shame, Quasar is a great app, and a paid one too :(

I'd start by removing fake carrier and use springtomize to change the carrier name. I tried fake carrier but it actually caused me problems. Just use springtomize instead. Plus you should probably chose between sbsettings and ncsettings. I'm not sure if they conflict with each other but in my opinion it's redundant tweaks. I'd pick one and remove the other. Jut my two cents.

But I definitely had a problem with fake carrier a couple months ago on my 4S on 5.1.1. Springtomize can change the carrier name for you. Let us know if you figure out the cause of your problems!

I thought it was me, until I jail broke the iPad where there were so few tweaks installed and the iPad crashes 4 or 5 times a day.

Any pointers as to which are the junk programs from my list?

Thanks for the advice. I removed fake carrier from the iPhone and immediately after the respring it crashed!

I'll see how it goes without fakecarrier today before deciding between sbsettings and nbsettings.

Been using sbsettings for years why because I've never had a problem. Why should I change what I know works. That's the way I think anyway.

I've had my 4 jb'd for 1 week and haven't had a single problem. I haven't done anything in SSH. Just download tweaks and play with different combinations. I kind of remember 1 music widget giving me some trouble. I ditched it and got JukeBox and I'm very happy with it. And usually when I decide I don't like one, I uninstall it.

I think on balance its fair to say each iPhone/idevice user experiences different levels of problems.

I got slight lag with my jb iPhone 4, which i know was winter board even after its recent update.

My tweaks were paid for and not cracked versions, and in total I probably had 15 or so tweaks, with two themes.

It is a ball ache having to respiring after most tweak downloads etc, but thats all part of the process. My 4 probably crashed a couple of times in a six month period.

After my 4 was stolen i purchased the 4s and have decided to keep it stock.

After a 2 week'ish period i no longer miss these tweaks and am enjoying a much more fluid user experience in my case.

Happy Days. ;)

Me too. I love sbsettings. Ncsettings is really well done and looks sleek, but i find sbsettings more useful with the extra features it offers.

Yeah. It's not for everyone

When you ask your phone to run an app that wasn't meant to be on it, with software that apple didn't approve, you find yourself running on hope and trust. It's a tradeoff you make to run fancy apps. That guy still shouldn't be crashing that much though.
Can anyone here tell me if there is a cydia app that will show us crash logs? Something a normal person could deceiver? Even a processes/CPU tracker? My 3GS gets slow at times and I can't pinpoint it. With a restart and all apps closed its confusing to know where to start troubleshooting.

I'm still open minded.

Since I opened this thread I've put the iPad back to stock (as suggested above) and will re-jailbreak by adding just the tweaks I really need and see how it goes. That way, I might even identify what it is that causes the crash.

Thanks for all the comments and advice.
You might also try using Crash Reporter to symbolicate the crash logs, it works SOMETIMES, it's not perfect.
I would advice against using any "Battery *" logger on Cydia as I had a couple crash my iPhone constantly, removed and they showed to be problematic.

Also and as much as I've heard this advice, I'd install 1 tweak at a time, use the iPhone for 1 or 2 days then if nothing happens with regular use, move on to the next tweak, otherwise like in your case, I have too many tweaks and finding a culprit is a pain in the ass.

With the checking of the Crash logs you can see which tweaks or mobile substrate add ons are mentioned the most, then take your chances with Springtomize (I think SBSettings does it as well, but not sure as I don't use it) to disable some MobileSubstrate addons and see if that changes anything.

And if you have OS X, you can always try Xcode and running a session of Instruments to see memory peaks and the like.

Anyway I'm no expert but those are the things I'm trying right now and so far it's worked, I get less crashes that before, still I think there are a couple tweaks that I have to disable, trying to find which ones (and too lazy to restore obviously, plus it's more fun to chase stuff this way, you learn a lot more).

Yes, true. Hopefully a lot of tweaks will get included in the next iterations of iOS.
As for theming I just dropped that "dream". Winterboard themes just look cheesy to me and I'm just using it to theme the Lockscreen with a real slick-looking theme, that's it.

You posted while I was replying but I think I covered those two.
By the way, with BBSettings, you can see a list of running processes along with memory use (which is sort of like the unix tops command but in your notification center and without resort to using the mobile terminal, which can be clunky at times).

Oh and the "something a normal person could decipher", well, I think the crash logs while meant to developers, are not that hard to read (I'm pretty technical myself, being a CS, but anyway, I don't think it would be hard for the average user to read).

And you can also use iFile to pinpoint /var/logs and check Apple's ones.

Update

Following the advice of removing one tweak at a time, and starting with FakeCarrier as being a possible culprit, I had a crash free day yesterday :)

So far, so good...

Thanks for all the comments and advice

Thanks for the tips. It was right in front of my face.
Still clinging to the hope someone writes an app called "here's the problem dummy!" I'd pay $5 for that. Id also like Siri to be more assertive. She'd threaten me when I'm about to do something dumb. "Are you serious? That app is sub-beta. I'm sick of crashing so knock it off!" Refreshing sass.

Good times.
If not then restore and apply the reverse philosophy "Install one tweak at a time".

I'm afraid that won't be possible, unfortunately. Specially in this age of multithreaded devices, things can get a bit harder to decipher.
There is always the chance a given application is having an unusual amount of sexy time with one of the CPU cores and the like, but in most cases is a bunch of mobile substrate add ons that get loaded in batch and one of them is Satan in disguise. So you usually have a list of possible culprits but in most cases figuring out which one is the killer might be something off the hook even for the best FBI agent that ever existed, so the "Take your chance" philosophy has to be applied.

Awesome! That's great news. Hopefully it stays that way for you.

End of day 2 report

Well at the end of the second day after removing FakeCarrier, no more crashing so it seems logical to conclude that it was that app which was causing the problem.

Happy days, thanks again for the support and advice :)

Next step is to work out what was causing the issue on the iPad, which was actually much worse (than the iphone) despite the fact that it had so few tweaks. This time I'm doing it the reverse way around having used it in stock form for the last 2 days. So tomorrow is jailbreak again and then add each tweak at a time...

Several unexplained restrings a day are usually signs of bad tweaks.

This happened to me from both Copic and Facebook this.

Try uninstalled each of your tweaks one by one. I'm sure the problem will go away once you find the tweak causing this.

----------

You think that's a lot of tweaks? I have over 50 installed and add 1-2 every other day it seems like.

----------

I have to respectfully disagree with this statement.

I am not advocating using cracked apps, but I myself have used some, and I have NEVER had a problem because of them.

My only problems occurred from legit tweaks, notably Copic (caused my phone to respiring once a day) and Facebook this (constant restring).

As an anti-piracy measure, some devs will make your phone respring randomly, or endlessly until you uninstall the offending app. BiteSMS does this, as does ReSupported.

I used to pirate Cydia apps through the source that cannot be mentioned, as I found it hard to justify paying for an App that wasn't guaranteed to work with newer versions of iOS, or to ever be updated again period.. or even be backed up if I need to restore my phone. Now I just don't use paid cydia tweaks as the crashing isn't worth it, and just stick to free ones.

That's fantastic. As soon as I saw the list of installed tweaks I knew fake carrier was your problem because I had the exact same problem. Good luck with the ipad!

I have never run into that problem and I use a ton of free and paid tweaks.
