Anyone found an RSS solution yet?

Hi,

Like many people, I'm disappointed that RSS support is no longer included in Safari. Now I'm looking for a solution but I'm not having much luck; all my searches just return people lamenting that it's gone, rather than solutions.

So... does anyone know of a plug-in/extension that replicates some of the now-missing functionality? I don't need much, just the ability to open RSS feeds and click through to the site.

All that I've been able to find so far are separate apps that don't integrate into Safari. Is that really my only choice? I just can't help but think that this is a big step backwards...

There's no RSS in Safari for now. But do you mind if I ask what you used Safari's RSS integration for previously, to give me an idea of other software that might be helpful/useful?

I didn't do much with it. If I liked a site and the little RSS icon showed up then I'd click the icon and drop the feed into my bookmark bar (usually in a folder). Then when I get a little number next to that folder I'd open it up and see what's new. Pretty simple, but I don't know how to accomplish this in Safari 6.

Interestingly, I see that Apple is still promoting RSS on its site.

I highly recommend trying Google Reader via the awesome Reeder app from the Mac App Store. Yes, it costs money, but it's well worth it and a much better experience than the old Safari RSS reader (in my opinion).

Another Reeder fan chiming in. It really is just a fantastic RSS Reader. It even allows you to just go to that website and browse through. I keep it on its own space on the far right and the dock icon discreetly shows you it has new stuff by changing its own icon. Try it out!

The only trial version of Reeder that I can find says that it's expired. I tried setting the clock back and it wants a Google account. All the documentation I can find says that it's a "Google Reader client", not an RSS client.

There is absolutely no reason that reading RSS should require a Google account. I also tried iReader but the Safari integration is nonexistent. Any other suggestions?

Vienna is free and open source and does not require Google Reader. Might meet you needs.

most RSS apps these days require google reader unfortunately. vienna is a good standalone and so is NetNewsWire which is what i used to use before switching to reeder. IMO, reeder is the best, but i can understand not wanting a google account but if you have any google service account you already have a google reader account since they've integrated everything together.

I used to use Safari and Mail's RSS integration a lot, I was pretty annoyed to see it go, though in preparation for ML a month or so back I started trying to find a replacement.

I ended up with Pulp, its not free but it works pretty well though it has a couple of GUI bugs.

It does not require google reader (actually doesn't work with it at all), which was one of my main criteria for selecting a client.
However it does sync via iCloud if you want it to.

Hoping Apple bring RSS back to Safari at some point in the future, to the iPhone as well. I love Reeder but the problem I have with it is that it's not integrated so any Safari extensions you have installed (IE clicktoflash) don't work in it's built in browser. Really annoys me that you can't zoom in on pages on the mac as well. (Using touch gestures on the Mac.)

Apple needs to build a proper RSS client into safari that uses iCloud to sync content; that would be brilliant.

I'm currently using an extension called Greader (In safari extensions page) which adds an icon to Safari's toolbar and says how many unread feeds I have. Click it to be sent to Google Reader.

Still use Reeder on the iPhone though.

I've thought about switching to pulp, but the lack of a way to sync/read to iPhone kills it for me. I like to flip through my RSS feeds when I have a free minute or two.

Except that Google does it really well and it's easy to hook into for devs instead of creating their own RSS backend.

Personally, I'm another very satisfied Reeder (Mac & iPhone) user. Though, I can also understand not wanting a Google account.

I've had the feeling my RSS were also not showing anymore in Mail. - Was it just not showing them or have they also removed RSS support from Mail? (i went back to 10.7.4 so i cannot verify)

They have removed RSS from Mail as well as Safari.

If you still want your RSS posts to appear in Mail there may be some options, as there is software which takes RSS feeds and then sends the posts out as email to your email address. The software might not be particularly easy to setup though. For example rss2imap.

Regarding Google Reader, you don't have to use your primary Gmail account if you don't want to. As a matter of fact I created a Gmail account under an alias just to use Google Reader. I get that people don't like google but if you're only going to use reader creating an alias is perfect.

Google reader is really one of the best RSS aggregators available and it's free. There are hundreds of iPhone and iPad apps in the app store that sync with it. Reeder is one of the best and it's silly to not use it especially since you don't have to give up any personal information.

I looked around and Vienna seems to be the best non-google option for me.

As for why I think they should've left RSS as part of Safari? So you don't have to keep swapping apps when you want to click through on something and then bookmark it. It's more than that, but that's the base of it.

A browser with rss support makes sense. Firefox and it's live bookmarks are not really useable.

What a crap. Actually i will stay with 10.7 ... what a stupid thing to remove such a useful feature which definately didn't do any harm ...

not really the same thing...

The button isn't the problem! I never used the subscribe button I just used to drag the url to my RSS bookmarks folder on my bookmark bar - the label would display how many of my preferred sites had new things for me to read using a numeric indicator.

This is a major set back that costs me time looking for the quick reads in-between work tasks - or I just miss updates altogether and just browse aimlessly.

What could possibly be the problem? is this a content war thing? about closing avenues where I control the content I want from the internet?

Will this ever end? I feel like marketing people really hate the freedoms of the internet and won't be happy until I'm strapped to my chair 24/7, in front of a TV and with my eyelids glued open!
