Could you please post what sort of battery life you’re getting? There’s a kerfuffle after The Verge reported M1 Max getting almost half the battery of M1 Pro. Would you say you get 8 hours of general use battery life?

I ordered the 24 core M1 Max but now went to cancel it for the 16 core M1 Pro

I‘m really wondering if the 24/36 really make that much of a difference for video editing. I would imagine it only really matters for R3D Raws or heavy color correction… After effects can‘t use the GPU pretty much at all, and for other editing operations I don‘t expect a big difference. A bit torn here, since 32gb ram would be nice, and then the GPU upgrade at least to 24cores is not that expensive anymore.

Interesting will have to look into this. I ordered the 24 core for a little more future proofing but don't need it that much. Maybe could save the $200 and just go pro if battery life impacted a lot.

This is really the difference for me too. Wait until December for 32GB of ram, or grab a base 10/16 with 16GB today? I know I’d use the 32, but I have no way of knowing if I’d regret the 16.

What do you use it for? I got the Pro 16" base, with 1TB. Was a very hard decision cancelling my 14 Max order, but after seeing some performance being downgraded a bit on the 14" (referring to MaxTech's framerate tests in Parallels, not sure if this affects other pro software as this is only emulation) , some people having loud fan noises and higher heat temps by about 6c (of course, it's a smaller enclosure) and worse battery (specially with the max in some cases and reviewers doing these, not all) it was too much of a risk.

I'm incredibly happy with the 16" base. Sure, I really wish I could've gotten a Max in the 16" with 512 SSD.. it would've given me more ram and gpu ( a lot more) for 400$. The difference in battery life on the Max is 10 hours vs about 14-16 on the Pro Base model, and this thing is a beast. Probably slightly better than my M1 or about the same which is insane for something double the power.

But am I actually going to use it other than dipping into parallels and toying around with games I don't actually play and have a gaming PC for? Probably for a little while, then no.

I do wish I had 32gb of ram though, everything seems smooth on my Pro 16" tbh.

My biggest use cases are 1. VM for old macOS versions and 2. Figma design files. Figma has in the past warned me about memory usage and I currently have 32GB. So my fear is 16GB would not be good for the long-term.

I have no doubt the machine would be as snappy as you say with 16 though!

Thank you for all the benchmarks! Makes me happy I went with the 24core GPU. I don't really need the graphics power, but it's nice to have and since I was going 32GB Ram anyways, the $200 upgrade for 400GB/s memory bandwidth is worth it.

Random question, do you the a 12.9 iPad Pro? If so, could you post a size comparison between it and your 14"?

Wow. 10 hours battery life vs 14-16 hours on the pro vs max. I almost regret buying the max now…..

Sorry, I don't have the 12.9 iPad Pro. I have been working with the computer for the last two days plugged in so I have no battery life experience. The 24 core scored 171 on Blackmagic Raw 8K Metal. The 32 core scored 202. My M1 MBP scored 57.

Thanks for sharing your experience!! About the fans? They start often?

I have only heard the fans twice. Once when I had a lot of things going on at once. The cpu was around 75% for a while and I could hear the fans but they were not loud at all. The second was when I was running Cinebench R23. Cpu pegged at 100% and once again, the fans were on but quiet.

Thanks Iankox, if finally you decide to use a little bit the battery let us know your experience please. Overall happy with the 24core? I believe it is the sweet spot for the 14inch.

32core - more heat
16core - less power

Ok but there are still the questions about battery life between 32 and 24 cores... If the battery lasts longer on the 24 core version, then this could be the sweet spot between performance and battery life.

I saw a video where it showed that the more GPU cores and memory the lower the battery life. All that has to be maintained and energized.

This is what I am trying to find out as well.

I forgot where I saw it, but a video did a test on exactly this. Long story short the 24 core version gets better life than the 32 version. It's the sweet spot in-between the 16 core and 32 core (if battery is your concern).
