iPad Pro Anyone here happy or not happy going from 12.9 first gen to second?

I just did and am very happy with it. The 1 thing I wish I could do, that I thought this one could do is run the same app simultaneously on split screen. Can you run the same APP in split screen? I'm not sure if there is a way or not, but it would be very valuable. Just wishful thinking I guess.

The second, is where are the IPad 12.9 app upgrades? Not even Facebook has done anything.

I just upgraded from a first gen 12.9 to the new 12.9 and couldn't be happier. I was able to sell my first gen for a good price so it made it even more worth it. This is my main machine so the upgrades are well worth it to me.

I don't believe you can run two instances of the same app simultaneously, except for having two Safari windows side by side.

Some apps are definitely lacking updates for the bigger screen. I think we'll see more utilization of the space and ProMotion for iOS 11.

Yeah I went to the 2nd gen also. The device is super fast and I'm very happy with it. iOS 11 will be a must have for iPad. My only (small, maybe OCD) issue is that my boot speed when unplugged (time taken from pressing button to seeing the apple logo) is about 6 seconds which is inconsistent with every other idevice that I own.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you sell your first gen 12.9"? I'm thinking of selling mine but looking for the best place online to list it.

I would utilize Swappa, it's one of the better online sources for selling used and new tech. Otherwise, the Marketplace forum on Macrumors is another option that some Choose. It's not a wide audience, but honest buyers and regular forum members.

Thanks for the recommendations! I checked Swappa (I've sold our old Apple swatches there and it was a good experience) but the pricing is crazy low for first gen 12.9 models. Mine is like new with a ton of accessories so it's worth more than what they are selling for there. I looked at the marketplace here but I guess I don't have enough posts to use that yet either. I think I will offer it to my clients (I'm and Apple consultant and instructor) to see if anyone would like to have it or maybe the dreaded Craigslist or similar. But wow, Swappa is getting like $450? These machines are too nice to give away like that.

Had 1 GB left of first 256 GB, Now have 215 GB left of second 512 GB. Happy now cause i can Keep buying movies and TV shows via iTunes/TV App. Next year would be 1 TB instead.
 
Other than having the latest/greatest (reason enough on its own), how significant are the improvements? IOS10 doesn't really stress the original 12.9, may be a different story with IOS11 but I just can't find a compelling reason to upgrade this cycle (bad as I want the latest/greatest!). Appreciate your first hand observations...

Don't you have an external storage? What's the point of storing everything on the iPad?

I definitely want to get the 2nd gen but, in my rational moments (lol), I know that the 1st gen is great and will do what I need at least until the next ones come out. That being said, I was at the Apple Store today and all my rational thoughts flew out the window. I am not sure I'll survive another trip there without leaving with a shiny new gen 2. :rolleyes:

I know how you feel. I ordered the 2nd gen online to replace the 1st gen three times and canceled the order the next day. The fourth time was the charm. I ordered a space gray, 255GB, LTE on July 2 and I received the shipping notice yesterday. It is scheduled to arrive on the 20th.

Yes, but how many are we talking about here. 512GB is huge and you pay a lot for it as well, I find cloud storage is much cheaper and you just need to download when you need them.

But Cloud storage doesn't take iTunes into account for storing your TV shows and movies, I have the 50GB plan which stores my photos from my iPhone and backups. I have a lot of TV shows, Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory and so on I also many multiple movies so the 512GB is very attractive for me knowing I can keep them on my device rather than having to rely solely on wifi.

I have thought about just getting the 256GB rather than 512GB but I don't know if I'd end up regretting it!

You're still going to run out of storage at some point with that approach though.

If you're buying media from iTunes, they're already in the cloud and don't use up iCloud storage.

Also, internet "when you need it" may not always be available. I had to stop my comiXology downloads because our home internet was acting up and going at an abysmal 1Mbps. Thank goodness I use iTunes encrypted backups and iCloud is just a contingency plan so initial iPad setup went just fine.

Also, while unlimited mobile data plans have made a comeback, for me, that's gonna add an extra $60 per month to my plan cost, iirc. A one-time cost of $300 to upgrade from 64GB to 512GB versus $720 per year added to my cellphone bill, I'm gonna have to go with local storage.

I’m running iOS 11 from my first gen iPP 12.9” and have zero issues related to speed / interactivity. It still handles the full suite of multitasking offered by iOS 11. I think the biggest thing missing besides the display update are the improved cameras, which should help with ARKit apps. Still, the ARKit stuff I’ve messed with has worked reliably, I’ve just needed to increase the room’s brightness level for the camera lens to do its magic for plane detection and such.
 
I just made the switch. Ordered from Best Buy because they had them in stock. I gave my first gen to my 8yo daughter who just broke her iPad Air. She loves the larger screen, the loud speakers and the Apple Pencil. It doesn’t weigh any more than her first iPad (the infamous 3). I love Tru Tone and Pro Motion. I haven’t used any of the power yet. I was very upset that they didn’t make a silicone rear cover for it until I realized how much lighter the device is without it. I purchased a very light rear cover and it’s perfect. I’m sure I’m imagining it but it feels a little lighter/better balanced than the first gen. I upgraded to iOS 11 Beta 2 immediately. The dock/multitasking benefits far outweigh the very few glitches/app crashes I’ve experienced. Love that the they just changed the way you quit apps in Beta 2.

You're not imagining it. The 1st gen is around the same weight as the OG iPad. The 2nd gen is around the same weight as the iPad 3/4. Heavier than the iPad 2 but still noticeably lighter than OG.

This year’s iPad Pro 12.9” weighs the same (1.49 lbs.) as the first iPad Pro 12.9”.

No it does not. This is directly from Apple's website. The Second Generation 2017 12.9 iPad is lighter over the first Generation 12.9 iPad.
