This year marks the first year ever I won't be upgrading to the new model. My iPhone 8 Plus is completely paid off, and Apple just replaced the screen for me yesterday with a brand new display. I factory reset my phone yesterday and put it in a brand new case. Almost feels like a new phone. I know the XS and XS Max are superior products, I just can't justify the cost of upgrading to them right now. Also in a way, I think the 8 Plus stands up to the XR in some aspects, such as having a true 1080 display which I mainly use for full HD video and such. I think next year I could make a case for whatever Apple releases, but for now this phone really is a workhorse and just does everything right. Plus, it feels kind of cool to have the last generation model of their 6/6+ design they released in 2014.

Anyone else doing this?
[doublepost=1539087101][/doublepost]Am also opting to keep the 8 plus rather than upgrade. Had unfortunately had bad experiences, device failures and replacements, with the initial 6 plus device model change over. Have also not "upgraded" to IOS 12.01 or 12 pending all the posted issues.

Still love my launch day 8, passing on Xs I believe, but may or may not try an Xr or even an 8+? Still can't decide, but I have no desire to put myself through the Apple QC lottery which is a significant detractor to upgrading if I'm 100% honest. Honestly given all of this I should stick with my 8.

Traveling in Europe right now using the screen on full brightness and GPS for hours on end every day and I've still been north of 40% battery by end of day with one exception, where I got down to about 18%. This phone has been a workhorse and it's not even a plus.

I would disagree with you, especially considering the augmented reality capabilities, Face ID alone is a ‘game changer’ in the biometric security revolution, and the TrueDepth Camera is setting the groundwork now for what it will be able to incorporate in the future. Maybe those are features that are worth anything to you, but you can’t say those are not break through when compared to the 6S. Otherwise, what do you consider to be ‘breakthrough’ technology?

??? None of those things you listed are major breakthroughs. Face id is not a breakthrough and some people dont even like it not to mention its slower than touch id. Augmented reality stuff is irrelevant to probably 90+% of us who will use the iphone. Im waiting for stuff like, 5 day battery life or something significant. The phone industry has evolved so much that the new improvements are barely relevant or useful anymore. We have reached a slow point atm.

I wasn't going to upgrade as I had the 8, the X and an Honor 10 but I was intrigued by the XR, just for the extra screen space.

Then I saw the XS Max in a store and really wanted it for not just the screen size, but also the fact that it is a better phone than the XR. I sold my 8 and my X for a good price so now I have the XS Max and my Honor 10 as a backup.

I couldn't be happier with the Max. Although identical to the XS in specs, the upgrade is in the screen size.

Well, I have an 8+ and upgraded to the Max. I had trouble with the display giving me headaches, so I returned it (first time ever to return anything to Apple). I took my son in to get an XS and I’m not gonna lie - I have some smaller phone envy. I’ve had plus phones since the 6, and I love them, but holding a smaller phone in the hand IS really nice. I certainly can’t go that route though, because of the display, so I have considered the Xr, even though it really isn’t much smaller.

At this point though, I would just have to see it in store and be blown away by something to get rid of my 8+ and buy it. My phone is great, still has Apple care and it’ll be paid off completely on IUP before the new ones come out next year, so I could actually sell it and put money towards a new phone at that time (or keep it of course).

I’ll admit my other struggle is giving up my Touch ID. I just really like my Touch ID. I know Face ID is the future, but I’m trying to hold out as long as I can...

That's another reason I didn't want an XR - the lack of 3D touch; I know many don't use it but i do and I think that would be a deal breaker for me.

I went from a 6+ to an 8+ last week.

My 6+ was purchased on launch and was running perfectly through 10.3.3. The battery was losing capacity so I got the $29 battery replacement a few months ago. The 6+ developed weird glitchy problems that would require occasional restarts and replugging in the Lightning connector for charging. It might be a coincidence with the battery replacement.
Screenshots of a couple of the problems:

ChargingError.png

I updated it to 12.0 and things were better but still not all good.
The first issue never came back but the second one often caused issues with charging.

I got my new 8+ at my local Apple Store. It has a 3.5mm dongle in the box and was running a version of iOS 11 so it's not the absolutely latest hardware build. Initially it was giving me all kinds of problems after restoring it from my 6+ backup with iMessage, iTunes syncing, AirDrop and Bluetooth. I was ready to return it but somehow managed to get it updated to iOS 12.0.

Everything works great now so I'm happy. The dual cameras are a nice improvement over the 6+ camera. Apps that need a lot of processing power are noticeably faster on the 8+ compared to the 6+. Touch ID works for me .
I could've gotten an XSMax but the high price and a long history of migraines and iris tumors led me to pass on this version of iPhone hardware.

I was SOOO excited about upgrading this year. I have always upgraded every two years, like clock-work. I last upgraded to the 7+ in 2016. Like each and every iPhone launch, I played a little into the hype, I do this even during years that I don't upgrade. But has it been a month now? I was just thinking this morning that the desire to upgrade is oddly gone...

My number one complaint is price, prices are out of control. $869 was NUTS for my 128gb 7+ in 2016, but Verizon gave me $650 for a two year old iPhone 6, making the net cost of the 7+ $219. No more 128gb, and I'm using more than 64gb so if I do upgrade I have to get the 256gb. Granted, each time I upgrade, by the end of the 2-year usage I would have been out of memory if I had not stepped up in memory. So perhaps I would have run out of memory before November of 2020 if I did get a 128gb XS (if they existed).

My only real desire to upgrade is that I do not like the size of my GIANT 7+. I was looking forward to the XS's smaller form factor while retaining the dual camera on the back (something the 7 and 8 do not have vs their 7+ and 8+ counterparts).

I really feel like if you don't upgrade shortly after the new phones are released, you might as well wait for next year. I may switch to a 3-year upgrade cycle going forward. Part of the reason for my 2-year upgrade cycle in the past was that an iPhone just wouldn't last much longer than 2-years for me. And that may or may not be the case for my 7+ too, it was actually replaced in May of 2017 when it stopped working for no reason. The Apple Store was baffled, at that point the phone had been out about 6 months and the apple store stated they had had very few issues with the 7+. I'm pretty sure the replacement phone was a brand new phone, just not in retail packaging. So I guess my current 7+ is only 18 months old technically. Here's to hoping it will make it to November of 2019.

This is almost exactly my story. Wow. My thinking too...except I really don't mind the plus size.

Just upgraded this summer from a 6 to an 8+ Red Product Edition. I actually waited until it was pretty clear what this fall's offerings would be, hoping for a 9 or some continuation of the 6/7/8 style. When it was clear Apple was abandoning the platform, I went ahead and got the 8+.

I'm very pleased with the 8+ so far and intend to keep it for a good 3 years. After that I'll just see what's out there, not limiting myself to Apple.

Face id is not a breakthrough and some people dont even like it not to mention its slower than Touch ID

Can you list any other smart phone manufacturers that _use_ 3-D facial mapping technology that is more secure than Apples? And you’re telling me that’s not breakthrough technology? I would highly disagree with you.

In Addition, Face ID has been improved with the speeds this year the iPhone XS, and I’m sure the average consumer doesn’t care about the .01 second that it doesn’t unlock faster than touch ID.

Face ID is DEFINTELY a Breakthrough in Technology. No other Company has yet to implement it in their Smartphones. Its More Secure and the speed of FaceID with the new iPhone is plenty fast. Yes, its "Slower" than TouchID. But, I'd take more Security than speed Any day.

Face ID is NOT breakthrough, there has been face unlock before on other devices, and even iris unlock. Yes apples is more superior and secure. But it is not some breakthrough, it is just an unlock your phone feature, and most people don't even care about it. If it is such a breakthrough as you say it is, then everyone would love using it. This is not the case, some people including myself find it inferior to touch ID. 5 day battery life on the other hand is what you call breakthrough, which you can guarantee everyone would like and approve of.

Face Unlocking for the sake of Convenience is completely Different than what Apple Implemented on the iPhone X.

Again, NO COMPANY has yet to use 3-D mapping + Infrared + Depth in their phones Camera System for Security. Which REGARDLESS of if people Like it or not, is truly Breakthrough/innovative.

Can you please answer the question this time I previously asked you? Which was, “Are there any other smart phone manufacturers that are releasing 3D facial mapping with their version of face ID?

But it is not some breakthrough, it is just an unlock your phone feature, and most people don't even care about it.

None of which you said here is a fact, that’s all opinion You interjected. You have no idea if consumers care about Face ID or not, and more to my point, no other smart phone manufacturer uses 3D facial mapping face as there form of security. So for you say is that is not ‘breakthrough’ clearly indicates that Apple is the only manufacture that developed this security feature to that security standard.

If it is such a breakthrough as you say it is, then everyone would love using it.

Just because Apple develops something that no other smart phone manufactures is using, doesn’t mean every consumer has to ‘like it’. But the point is, it’s still technology that other smart phone manufactures have not developed with 3-D facial mapping, those are two things that are not mutually exclusive in your post.

I upgraded the other week to the 8+ after comparing it to the up and coming XR and felt on paper it offered me a better experience. I’m not bothered that the phone won’t look like the new ones and I wasn’t prepared to lose 3DTouch just yet. For convenience I like that I can open my iPhone quickly as I’m getting it out of my pocket too and the fact the 8+ still has TouchID was attractive for me.

The XR will undoubtedly be a great iPhone though and will have a lot of popularity I think. For those wanting a new look iPhone and don’t want pay over a grand it’s a great alternative. The colours will draw consumers in too as those not tech savvy will be attracted by aesthetics over anything else.

Same. Keeping my 8+ for the foreseeable future.

I like 3D Touch. And I also like having TouchID. Especially with Apple Pay at the register. It's nice having a Home Key as well. Heck, I even miss the back key at times from my old Android phone days. But the biggest reason is I can't stand that BUN (Big Ugly Notch) of the current new Apple iPhones.

So I am keeping my 8+ until it breaks/gets too slow. Or until Apple finally finds a way to get rid of that ugly notch.

I have a launch day 8 and have absolutely 0 desire to update. This phone is already too damn big for my tiny hands and this years phones aren't helping. I'm gonna get a new battery tomorrow, so it will be like brand new again. Until apple comes out with a smaller phone i'm sticking to the 8.
Besides, at this point, might as well wait till 5g and dual sims, none of this esim ********.

I wouldn’t have bought the 8 Plus in the first place if I didn’t expect to keep it for at least a couple of years. Buying a new phone every single year is a waste.

Trying to not upgrade but not sure how long I can hold out :). Love the look of the XS Max. I'm on a 7 plus (that I love) but do like the idea of getting more real estate and less bezels.
It's really not that more as iOS is zoomed slightly compared to plus models, basically the same width keyboard etc - you just gain a little height. Plus the damn notch.
