For movies I barely care about and only envisage watching once, I'll rent from iTunes. For favourites, ones I'll watch over again, I'll stick to blu-ray — they're cheaper and usually come with interesting supplementary material.

If iTunes is going to beat blu-ray, it won't be on convenience alone. Apple needs to work on the value proposition.

Don't be so sure about that. Convenience is a big deal. At least for the 99% who are normal folks and wouldn't know MacRumors from Trader Joe's. :D

Having your entire collection in the cloud, available anywhere, anytime and not having to mess with ripping and encoding is a BIG DEAL. It really is. I have not made the switch myself but it becomes more tempting as the quality improves on the iTunes Store and they keep adding value-adds such as iCloud storage and retrieval.
