I've seen three different theories on this now, and I think I disagree with all of them:

1) Your theory (and I realize you're partly just being funny) about encouraging iPad upgrades by not offering as much protection. I doubt Apple would even think that's effective. People would just do what they're doing now--get their cases from third parties.

2) There's a heat issue that Apple is trying not to exacerbate by selling cases. I doubt that's true as well. My 9.7" Pro never broke a sweat and never got more than slightly warm to the touch, even after a lot of more resource intensive use. My 10.5" Pro is the same way. Also we must keep in mind that the 2017 standard iPad model also didn't get a back cover for unexplained reasons, and I doubt that model has heat issues either. Also, if there were any widespread heat issues, we'd definitely know by now. Think back to how fast that story spread when the "new iPad" (iPad 3) came out.

3) They're trying to push the leather sleeves. I don't think that's it either, for the same reason I listed in #2--the standard 2017 iPad isn't technically compatible. I suppose you could buy one for that model, but it wouldn't fit right, and you'd have a useless Pencil holder at the top for an accessory that doesn't work with your iPad.

I think the reason is probably just that the back covers don't sell very well. As awesome as they are, and I do love using them because they fit so perfectly, I never see anyone else using them other than myself. Most people seem to buy cheap third party cases. It's a shame though--I was VERY fond of my silicon back covers for my 9.7" Pro. I had a gray one and a blue one and loved both. The blue one looked really cool against my gray ASK as well as my lighter blue Smart Cover.

No one buys iPad Pro 9.7 Back cover because its price is ridiculous. :(

I wonder if perhaps Apple is pushing the leather sleeves because they make the iPad look like a more serious device. They are trying harder than ever to push it as a laptop replacement and competitor to the Surface and maybe the brightly colored back covers made it seem like more of an entertainment device.
I do wonder if part of it is marketing, which is kind of along the lines of what you're getting at. Without a back cover on during use, it's much more obvious that it's an iPad.

That's basically what I'm saying. Though I found those covers to be the best on the market as far as fit and durability.

I ordered and received the Moko clear back case for the iPP 10.5 and it fits beautifully and the price is right. I'm waiting for my Smart Keyboard to arrive.

I purchased the same one and I already have my smart keyboard attached. The case fits nicely and does not interfere at all with the smart keyboard. The only thing I have noticed is that between the smart keyboard and clear Moko back case that both together add weight to the 10.5" iPad Pro. There's not much you can do about that if you want the convenience and protection for your iPad Pro.

I ordered the Moko soft TPU back case, and it sucks. The power button cover area pushes down at all times and powers the device down, and the camera cutout was too small. I had to cut the power button area out and shave some slivers of material out of the camera cutout to get the case to fully fit the right way.

Super disappointed, but that's what you get when you are an early adopter of a new form factor. I'm going to make due with the Moko case until my Poetic case comes in: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MZ79FAM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Looks like they had some issues with fit too, but they're re-releasing it in a few days with corrections made. I often leave my Pencil at home for fear of sitting on it and snapping it in half while in my pocket, so this will be a great solution. I've had Poetic cases before, and they tend to be high quality--I'm excited to get this one.

Hi Spiderman,
Did you order the Poetic Lumos case?... The one that has the pencil holder built into it?
If so, I bought the smoke gray Poetic Lumos case and returned it the same day, horrible in so many ways:
1. Cutouts were very poorly aligned.
2. The inside of the case is not pebbled or textured so it sticks to the Apple logo and looks terrible.
3. The edges are very soft and pliable and when holding the iPad the case sides "roll off" if you understand...
4. I emailed Poetic a week ago, zero response. Horrible customer support.

I'll post a pic in a few minutes.

Thanks

I ordered the Khomo case on Amazon. I've used their thin cases for years and they're always great.

I have the gray silicon back/cover for my iPad Mini 4 and the combo has performed far beyond expectations. Thrown in duffel bags, backpacks, gym use daily, you name it - they have held up great. In hind site, better than "worth it" - they were a bargain.

I purchased the full smart case for my iPad Mini retina, at the time I thought it was very expensive but it still looks and functions perfectly about 4 years later. I just want the same think for my 10.5.

I did notice the thing where it's sticking to the logo, but I'm not seeing any of the other issues you listed. Mine was a perfect fit.

khomo case is what you want. I had it for my 12.9 and iPad mini - both were as close to apple cases except hard plastic back. Khomo are good quality - after 1+ I didn't see any wearing and no damage to my ipads at all.

I'd like an apple back for my 10.5 but I don't want the whole thing covered all the time as in the past. I'm risking some light scratches happening but I love using both my new iPads with just a smart covers...

Interested in the Pad & Quill leather cover (folio) that is compatible with the ASK. Looking forward to hearing reviews.

While I respect your position, I have not had any issues with mine...it’s perfect in every way really.

There is nothing better than Apple's silicone cases for grip. I have ordered 10 cases and covers from third parties at Amazon and settled on one. Not sure of the brand but has the tear drop cut out for the camera and LED. The back cover is softer than the hard plastic ones and give good grip. Most have a hard back and makes them way too slippery.
The CTsing has a teardrop cutout. I'm using that one now. I have a purple Khomo with the rubberized back ordered. If I like the feel, I'll cut the cover off. If not, I'll send it back. The CTsing is pretty good. Wish it were a tiny bit thicker and softer but at least it's not slick.

All the cutouts line up? Mine were off, most notably the tiny little hole in the back that I believe is some type of sensor or speaker. The Poetic case totally covered it up.
Glad yours fit well, maybe its my iPad thats off LOL

The softer back is what made this my choice. I am looking at a pile of backs and cases from Amazon and this CTsing case is my favorite as it has the softest back. The others were so slippery that I could not even pick my 10.5 off a hard surface with one hand as it kept sliding away from my fingers trying to get under it to grab.

Thanks for identifying the case as I ordered so many and the CTsing does not have any brand name on it. I hated to take the Apple cover off of it and was thinking of cutting the cover off and using the Apple one.

Still upset at Apple for letting us down, no case was loved more than my silicone Apple case and cover. Feels so good to hold, lots of grip!:(

It's really easy to cut the cover off the CTsing if you have a straightedge and a craft knife or rotary cutter. Scissors would work, too, but it might not be quite as straight a cut. I had to channel out a little area on each side for my ASK to fit properly, but it works. While I'd rather have an Apple silicone back case, I'll do a little minor surgery on other cases that feel good and fit well if that's what it takes.

Yeah my cutouts are all perfect--you should try to get that exchanged for sure.
