Anyone regretting the iMac 24"?

I used to own the powermac dp 1.8 system. I have since purchased a refurb 24" Imac. I have to say this thing is AWESOME LOOKING!
I do a little bit of audio and video editing. I somtimes miss the powermac but it might just be me.
I do see a little speed improvement via the intel machine. I need to upgrade the ram to 2 gig also.
Anyone having second thoughts or is it just me?

Everyone has second thoughts on something they buy. I have second thoughts about my getting a MBP, sometimes I think I should have gone with the MB instead.

And a large part, at least for you is, you spent x amount of money on a 24" computer.

In some ways you took a step down. In other ways it is a better machine. You knew you were making a compromise when you bought it. Add more RAM and enjoy it for what iot is. It is an awesome machine.

I had a week 19 Macbook and a 24" imac..... I ended up selling both and gor a super cheap imac G4 15"... which for some reason faster then my macbook...but thats another thread...if you are thinking of selling... do before the update....

Hopefully you got the maxed graphix card. Thatll keep you happy for a long while.

You MUST put 2GB in it, believe me, youll see the difference.

I dont recommend OSX with anything less, for optimum "wow I can do that many things at once with no slowdown!?"-ness

I would not call it a step down by no means. I looked at a ton of benchmarks and the Intel Imac was indeed a bit faster. I did not get the best graphics card because I purchased it via refurb and it was not posted.
I will in fact order a stick of ram today to boost performance. I just kinda miss having the best of the best I guess???

i also used to have a dp 1.8 g5 powermac. most of the time i do cad and cad rendering. The imac completly blows the powermac apart! 50-70% faster from my experiance.

If its just that the imac may not 'feel' much faster, dont worry it is!

no problem with my 24" imac. I just sometime think I made a mistake getting rid of my old dp 1.8 powermac. I have ordered more ram for the imac.
This machine does seem alot faster and I know when all the software moves to intel it will fly....I Hope....

I have had numerous Macs over the last 10 years. Typically I get a new one every 6 months or so. The last computer I had before the one I have now was a 2.66GHz Mac Pro with X1900XT and 2GB of RAM. It was without a doubt the fastest computer I have ever owned or even used for that matter. But, it was more power than I could imagine using at this time. Sure, it was nice to load up Half-Life 2 and get a minimum 80 FPS with everything maxed at 1920x1200 but for a $3000 setup, it was overkill.

I sold the Mac Pro and bought a 24" iMac with the 7600GT and pocketed the $1000 difference. It was the best decision I have ever made computer wise. I feel that the 24" iMac is THE perfect computer (for me anyway). For what I do, it is just as fast as the Mac Pro save for the slightly slower video card. Plus, it is so clean looking. The iMac sits out in our family room so having a mess of cables is not a good thing. The iMac only has one cord coming out of it (power cord obviously) and it is routed such that you really can't even see it except where it leaves the iMac and ducks behind the table top.

I love my 24"er!

I have 2 gig of RAM in mine and it flies. Sometimes when I hit f9 late in the day I get this huge mosaic on my screen. Just soo many things open, and things still runs smooth.
I didn´t "downgrade", so I can´t compare my experience with yours, but I´m pretty sure that extra gig will improve th overall feel quite a bit

When we got our 24", my wife complained about it being too big. A few months went by and I saw her with 8 screens open using every inch of space and I decided to ask her if she still thought the screen was too big. Sheepishly, she said no.

After posting this today I can finally lay this to rest. I KNOW I did the right thing in getting my 24" Imac. I have ordered the ram and it will be here in a few days.
I thought I would miss my old dp 1.8 and I did. But now I could not be more happier with my decision.
About the screen size my whole family LOVES IT......... Thanks Agian MC

Having used a 22" ACD with my Cube for five years, the only serious change was screen brightness. I usually have it set at 50%, which is still a hell of a lot brighter than the 22" on 100%, which itself is still a hell of a lot brighter than my wife's MacBook. As I do a lot of A2 drawings, you can never have too much screen space, as far as I'm concerned.

Only regret that I have is the amount of time spent in awe when using this machine...

Well, that and now fighting the woman for it - she's in the midst of doing massive amounts of scanning photos, playing w/ iPhoto, etc. - comes in very handy w/ the large beautiful screen to tweak/edit/etc multiple photos. While, running iTunes for some streaming R&R, Firefox showing radar via intellicast and gmails, etc. Very pleased to date

My wife got hers because it is awsome looking. And it has everything except the 2nd Gig of Ram. (She did have to buy a USB faxmodem for faxes).


But it does mean she bought both the monitor and the computer at the same time, and when she replaces them, she will replace them at the same time. I'd much rather upgrade the monitor one year and upgrade the computer the next year. I got my moniitor last year, this year I contributed to her iMac, and next year I will get my pro.

One irritating thing about the iMac. She can't use it as a direct monitor for her laptop. This oversight bothers me. Other high-end monitors have inputs for multiple computers, but not the iMac.

I was worried mine might have been too big (very small apartment, very tight on space), but once I set it up I knew I made the right decision. I absolutely love this thing!

My only regret is buying from MacMall. Never again.

I find the iMac to be plenty quick enough for my needs and the display and design are beautiful. I have a minor quibble with the display hum and a slightly noisy fan, but overall there is little here not to like. If I could add/change one thing, though it would be to either include an internal modem, or add and power the USB ports on the keyboard. The mighty mouse is also a little less mighty than I would like.

I plugged in my iPod to the keyboard, but there wasn't enough power, so I had to unplug something from the back of the computer and use that plug. Not good.

We bought a modem - but only for faxes. I have old modems but they weren't USB.

I mainly wanted the ability to use this as an external monitor for a laptop.

Completely agree, it's retarded to not be able to use that beautiful display with an external PC; if it had this capability, I'd already have an iMac. As is, I'm waiting for the refresh to see if they add this, if not I'll get a mini (once it goes c2d) and a separate LCD that can be used with both. I'm not going to have multiple displays on my desk; the way Apple designs things so cleanly, you'd think they would understand this. I really hope they add this with the next iMac update...

My only regret with my 24" iMac is that it will not boot windows on ithe internal monitor and i have the "Black Screen of Death". Otherwise it is serving me very well.

My 24" runs bootcamp just fine. Did you update your firmware? Though I use bootcam less and less, since finding parallels.
