I just got the 5Gbit wisdPi usb adapter and it seems to be performing closer to my anker 2.5Gbit in Sonoma (which is good). my gear is all 2.5Gbit and my internet is 3Gbit fibre.

here's some iperf3 between my MacBook Pro 2015 running linux with my previous anker usb-c 2.5Gbit adapter and my MBA M3 with Sequoia and the wisdPi 5Gbit adapter. The connection between both is going over a pretty cheap 2.5Gbit switch that in general only gets about 2.3-2.4Gbit/sec I think from the benchmarks I've seen.

I think maybe I'll take this time to try hunting for some cheap 5Gbit switches now and get another wisdPi adapter for my other MacBook too.

I also received two wisdPi adapters and once connected to the macs again got the speed results of the “old” 8156 d-Link with sonoma.

I will now check if the previously reported network instabilities also occur with the 8157s.

I have also reported the issue to Realtek, updated the feedback to Apple and reported it to both macrumors and 9to5, no one seems to care about ethernet on mac anymore. Sad.

Anyway, thanks to wisdPi and SG- for testing with iperf.

I'm curious if this adapter can actually reach 5Gbit on Sequoia tho, if you're able to test between both machines directly let us know.

here we go:

(Direct connection between the two macs, my network hardware has just been upgraded to 2.5gbps, it will be some time before I upgrade to 5/10gbps ;) )

Excellent job with this adapter @wisdpi, it doesn't even get hot, so far I haven't detected those network instabilities in the logs anymore (knock on wood).

Guess when the 8157 arrived ;)

very nice to see near 5Gbit speeds.

I agree, it stays cool and the adapter comes with both usb-c and usb-a cables in case you need to use it in older systems.

Just got one of the Wavlink 5G adapters (I ordered a WisdPi one too, to test!).

I just plugged it in, out of the box. Speeds look good, you can see the jump in speed here:

So far it's only slightly warm too.

Packet loss/jitter test for 30 seconds was great - no late/dropped packets - I did the "Zoom video" config test, being more rigorous in data sent/received:

Three questions though:

1) The pamphlet mentioned loading a driver for the Mac. I checked there web site, there is one - looks like it might be version 1.0.22. Is this needed, and/or did those with the Wavlink install the driver from the web site?

2) How can I tell which version driver my Mac has now, to see if it's older than 1.0.22?

3) As you can see speeds are full 2Gbps again, yet this was odd - in the settings under the network connection, under hardware, see this - it says the connection is 100BaseTX. Is that due to old driver or just a mistake?

Mine shows the same on my MacBook as well. I did wonder why the 100mb connection speed was listed but if you change to manual there isn't a choice for anything above 2500. Also noticed the Maximum link speed says 2.5gb/s. I am running beta 4 and all of that shows the same for me. Speed are as expected with the 5gb adapters (WisdPi & Wavlink both 8157 chipset) but still slower with any 8156 based chipset adapter.

Been testing the WisdPi adapters, it gets the right speeds for me (2200-2300) as well as the Wavlink one I tested further up. I prefer the WisdPi one as it's a little cooler to the touch.

Thank you for your support! Although we are using the same chip, we will provide better hardware cooling design and software services. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us!

I just updated my one Mac to 15.1, and 2.5G adapters with the Realtek 8156 chip are still showing d/l speeds of 1800-1900 Mbps d/l speed. 5G Adapters with the 8157 Realtek chip show 2200-2300 Mbps. So not fixed yet 😡

And they never will (perhaps because of the oerrs highlighted in other posts). However if you have a usbc usba usb 3-3.2 adapter you can safely use the ‘old’ 8156 with windows at full speed.

yeah I tossed it on my MacBook Pro 2015 running Linux acting as my NAS/Media server and it's able to max out it's speed just fine. just make sure the usb-c to usb-a adapter you get runs at the right speed, the first ones I got were low quality and barely ran at 900Mbit/sec.
