if they weren't there, i wouldn't miss them... much. but i get a quick overview of the weather, my schedule (with 'dayhub'), and ONE news story. so, not urgent, but not bad either.

They need a widgets category in the App Store, its so hard to find apps that support widgets and even when they update, if you dont read the notes then nothing tells you a widget has been added - they should add a sectio in the widget area that shows newly added and recommended widgets maybe

or at least an indicator, like in-app purchases, that widgets exist for that app.

I use a couple of widgets, but I could easily do without them. What I really cannot understand is why Apple implemented widgets the way they did. On an iPhone which has a small screen you can place widgets anywhere, on an iPad which has acres of unused space, they are limited to the left margin 😳. Why?!

It sounds like they are serving their purpose. They get out of the way when people don’t want them and are incredibly useful for people who do. Personally I keep a single stack on the top of my main page for basic stuff and that is it.

Widgets can be useful unfortunately at this point in time the number of widgets that are useful are limited. Hopefully we see more in the future

Widgets are limited and in some case a waste of valuable screen real estate
If Apple as well as third party apps would supply a better variety it might become more useful

Because they're springboard icons, and that's *all* they are. That's also why they're not interactive. On any iPhone, you can't put a widget just anywhere, it always goes into the next free icon position.

Had to turn them off because my battery was failing (at 88%). Have a new battery so I might try the weather one.

88% battery life is nowhere near failing.
And yet my ipp 12.9 that is over 5 years old has 66%. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The smaller the battery, it seems, the more it affects the device. I think that if your battery is failing, the OS starts doing stuff in the background that comes off as slowing down, closing apps, etc.

That’s right but it only starts doing that at 80%. You are well above that.

That’s what I thought, too. But my experience is completely different. And we have 2 2017 iphone SEs that did the exact same behaviors and were fixed with new batteries. My guess is the batteries were defective in the first place. Can’t argue with what is actually happening with the device 🤷🏻‍♀️ It only cost about $25 per device to fix and a permanently broken home key on one of them (be careful in how you open them).

I love them especially using them with shortcut's I have my iPhone down to one screen with everything else in the app library.

Using the menu command in Shortcuts you can have loads of apps under one button on your Home screen, you can split them into different groups such as Shopping, Finance, Social Media etc

Also using different widgets you can stack them on top of each other so you have everything you need on just one screen also if you make them smart stacks they will show up when you need them. For instance my reminders and calendar widgets show in the morning then changes as the day goes on.

All of this goes to show that different people have different workflows and preferences. Widgets may not be your cup of tea. Or it may be exactly what you have been looking for. Or somewhere in between.

Having the choice to use them or not is good.

And you can bet your next paycheck that they will improve over time. Apple is aware of the capabilities they left behind with the old style widgets and I’m sure they have plans in place to replicate those, while maintaining a safe environment, if possible. They use these features too.

Since I still rely on iTunes 12.6.5.3 (which breaks widgets every time I sync) and I use iPhone a lot less than iPad (which does not support iOS style widget), i just kinda forget about those widgets after the novelty wears off.

The fact that rearranging them on the iPhone is complete disaster idk how anyone can actually attempt to edit their Home Screen once widgets are on them.
just this week I wanted to add an app to a folder on my Home Screen that has widgets and it became a clusterf*** quickly.

Some widgets can be very useful like weather , reminders, stocks, news. But entertainment stuff like podcasts and music is completely useless.

I use a calendar and weather widget all the time.
I do too, but the previous (pre iOS 14) version of the Calendar widget offered a much more useful timeline view similar to the day view in the Calendar app itself. Not a big fan of the current Calendar widget on either Mac or iOS. Does anyone knows of an iOS app with a timeline view of the day?

I have a 4x4 Smart Stack on my home screen. So, I haven’t forgotten, but I don’t find it that useful. I wish they were interactive and had a bigger variety. I assumed by now we would’ve at least had an iMessage, email and custom photo widget by now. Shame if they save that for iOS 15.
