Anyone still using a 1,1/2,1?

Hi,

Random thread but was just wondering if anyone still uses a 1,1 or 2,1 as their daily machine, I do and mine runs quite well still and I have ML on it at the moment which seems to speed it up.

Anyone else still use one?
 
Yup. 1,1 is running like a champ. I'm planning to install Mavericks using the new boot.efi today, and I'm considering upgrading the processors...

I'm looking at putting 2 3ghz quad cores in mine what config you running? I also want to do mavericks but I'm going to get an SSD first

What graphics card(s) are you using?

I'm still running a 1,1, fairly happy with it but I have 2 7300GT graphics cards that I really don't feel like replacing now. If I can keep those and run Mavericks I'll add a Samsung EVO SSD and expect it to get me by another year or two.
 
Me too, Quad 3Ghz, 6gb ram, 512gb SSD, ATI 5770.

I had it repaired a few times already.
Two times the 1900 graphics card had problem.
Motherboard went down in 2012.

I'm actually using Mac Mini 2012 as the main machine now. With the Mac Pro as backup so there's no downtime.

I'm going to try installing Mavericks as well. That should probably give the Mac Pro 2-4 more years of usage. And after that if OSX can no longer run, probably install Windows.

Well, it's still quite a fast and capable machine.

Yep still running a MP 1,1.. looks like for a few months more still :p till a nMP will arrive.

2x2.66, 13 GB ram, 2x ati 5770's, 3.5 TB's of internal storage
 
Running a 2,1. I needed a better video card, so I bought a flashed one off of ebay and it sounds like a plane taking off in the morning before warming up.

Other than that, this machine has run day-in, day-out for five+ years without so much as a single hiccup. It's paid for itself hundreds of times over.

If my new Mac Pro, when it finally arrives, has the same staying power, it'll be a very worthy investment.
 
My 1.1 is serving daily duty, but not for long. The power supply no longer puts out enough juice to run all 4 internal HD bays, particularly at startup, and even with the 5770 card it's starting to feel underpowered. I sold a handful of Apple shares recently and am ready for a new Mac Pro once benchmarks come out.
 
I'll continue to use my 1,1 until my nMP arrives. I'm not sure what I'll do with the 1,1 then. It started out as a stock 2 X 2.66 Dual-Core Xeon machine. I've upgraded RAM to 22 GB in stages. Hard drives have grown from the single stock 500 MB. Two internals have failed over the years. I've presently got a 500 MB SSD, one 2TB and two 3TB internals and some externals that I use for back-up. I added an ATI Radeon HD 4870 when I bought by HP 3065 (2560 X 1600) monitor. I also have an HP LV2311 and a very old 15" Studio display connected.

The 1,1 is slow for some of the things I do. One of my data analysis programs takes 4-8 hours to run. Poser is so slow I seldom use it. Other than that most of the apps I run are reasonably responsive. I also run MS Access in VMware Fusion and some complex queries can take hours. I expect to seem significant improvement with the nMP.
 
Still using a 1,1 and buying a new hex.

Why? Don't want to buy more memory for a 7-year-old rig, the old quad-processors get slammed by LR, and I'd have to do firmware and cpu surgery to get it moving at a decent pace.. which I don't want to do on my primary system.

Once I get the new one, will try some inexpensive upgrades on the 1,1.. if it bricks, I won't be stuck.
 
Still using an '01 G4 Quicksilver (Power PC) with System 9. Every time I wanted to upgrade Apple announced a new design so I held off (G5, Intel-based, now nMP).
 
Still using the 1,1 in the studio for music editing and mix down, newer machine wouldn't make enough difference but my everyday machine is a Hackintosh {in sig}, I built it waiting for a new Mac Pro but it has been rock solid for the past three years.
 
Still using a 1.1 at work. Running SL and works like a charm. I'll probably put ML on it eventually to see if it helps performance at all.
 
I got rid of my 1.1 2006 Mac Pro (16GB ram 4x 2.66) model in 2012, I donated it when I got an i7 Mac Mini 2.6 quad core, 16GB ram fusion drive.


It blows the performance of 2006 Mac pro and generates a fraction of the heat/power consumption.

I am definitely getting a new Mac Pro in 2014-2015. I want to wait out and see how this new redesigned model works out, if any issues are found and would likely be corrected in the 2014 model.

Also the 2014 Model will feature the Haswell CPU which offers FMA/AVX2 which does provide a significant performance boost on software optimized to take advantage of those features vs AVX1.

I will be budgeting about 4800-5000 USD for one for 2014.
 
I still have a 1,1 Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 Dual Core, 6GB RAM, 80GB SSD, plus 3 other storage drives. I don't use it as much being it's stuck in a cold basement now and stuck on 10.7.4 as well - not to mention getting rather sluggish. Ordered a stock quad nMP as well as a 4TB external drive, new speakers, and a new monitor for my dual monitor setup. I'm looking forward to Early January!
 
I'm at a crossroads...do I let the ole girl go, and get a new Mac Pro? I spent $2499 in late 2006, plus about ~$1000 in small upgrades over the years (adding ram, harddrives, videocard, etc). I've never before owned a product that has been as reliable as this Mac Pro. With 7 years of use, this Mac Pro has cost me about $1.17 a day, which has been a hell of a value. There are a few possible options I'm debating:

1. Upgrade my cpus to x5355s and update to Mavericks, extend my MP's life for another couple of years.

2. Sell my Mac Pro as is, and buy 2.6 quad core Mac Mini.

3. Sell my Mac Pro as is, and buy a new 6 core Mac Pro.

I logically know that the Mac Pros have always been more than I really need, but I love the long term reliability that another mac pro would provide...any thoughts?

I'm in the same boat and I've ordered the nMP. I've got three reasons:

1. I can't install Mountain Lion let alone Maverick
2. I really need a 4K monitor
3. About 10% of what I do could use a speed bump.

I think my 1,1 still has a few good years in it. I'm hoping to gift it to one of my young nieces or nephews.
 
Have one of the first Dual Quad Core 2.1's from 2008 had a few mods and problems over the years but its been a great work horse. Showing its age now. will have to upgrade soon but what too, i have no idea, equivalent speck mac pro with all the now necessary peripherals way out of my current status. I just hope this recovery is not another false dawn so i can afford the finance.
 
I'm a little late to the 1,1 party. Bought mine last year for $350 at a surplus sale to upgrade and edit my web series on.

Was originally a base 2ghz, now has 2 quad core 2.66ghz xeons (SLAG) that appear to use less power and run cooler than the old ones. 16gb of ram that I bought used off eBay for $50 a 180gb intel SSD (originally for my mini, but it didn't like the sand force controller so I gave it to the pro) and a Gtx 560ti evga card.

Running lion (because of the video card) and the thing screams. All I'm missing is a battery backup and drive backup. It's a sweet machine, and I'm glad to have it.

I've had 5354s and 5355s in it, but in my kind of work there's no benefit from high core count, so until I'll lay my hands on pair of 5365s the thing will run 5160s. Runs Mavericks beautifully, thanks to tiamo's bootloader.

You say it runs Mavericks beautifully, does it run like the machine has always been supported by the latest OS or is it a little laggy? My 2012 MacBook Air is shocking with it, same withy my dads maxed out 2012 iMac so I'm a little cautious about running it on my 1,1.
