You need any supported card, 5770 is most popular. Unsupported cards will work AFAIK, but with basic functionality: i.e. no acceleration.

Oh okay I have a x1900 xt so that would work for the time being, was going to get a 5770 after Xmas anyway?

It will work, but is a painful experience. Mouse pointer leaves trails, moving windows around leaves artifacts, switching to Dashboard looks terrible, etc. The X1900 was the card I had until I did the Mavericks upgrade (via tiamo's bootloader) on my MP2,1. I was fortunately able to get an XFX7850 which works after changing the AMD kexts -- only two applications have complained so far, but I don't want to flash the card as I might be trading out for a Sapphire R9. So, you will definitely be ready to swap out that old X1900.

I have a XFX Radeon 5750 that works great after changing some AMD kexts as well. I just went from 6 to 12GB of ram and runs Mavericks really well. I have a 64GB SSD which is slow but better than my old HDD. In the future I plan to get 2x2.66 quads for even more speed!

Do you get a bootscreen with that card? I would use a pc card but its the no bootscreen thing thats putting me off

cheers

Hi,

Random thread but was just wondering if anyone still uses a 1,1 or 2,1 as their daily machine, I do and mine runs quite well still and I have ML on it at the moment which seems to speed it up.

Anyone else still use one?

Yeah, I still have one, and it's fine at times, but a real dog at others. Primary issue really is memory, and the fact that current apps really are designed expecting more. I see a lot of bottlenecks, and ironically Safari is one of the worst performing browsers on it.

And the Radeon 5770 is just old.

Likely sticking with my Quad/D300/32/512 nMP order, but could be swayed by other reviews to change the order again.

NICE! Bet your looking forward to that! If I bought one it would be a Base 6 core, D300, 512, 32GB from crucial. But for audio work my Mac Pro now is fine, if I bought the new one I would feel like I'm spending half of the cost on graphics I'm never going to use. What do you use your MP for?

Most Mac users don't do a verbose boot, so they don't see anything during the boot process besides the grey Apple wait screen. What are your concerns about missing out on that?

I have three 2007 MacPro2,1s (8x3.0 GHz cores w/o HT). Thanks to Tiamo, they are all running Mavericks. Each has 32 gigs of ram. I have added a FPS Booster to each of them to power dual Nvidia CUDA cards for Octane Render. Each of these systems is a vital part of my 3d render farm.

LR, PS and some gaming. Hence my debate about the D300 vs the D500 and # of cores. I'm still on the fence as to if jumping to a hex will help, and pretty sure the D500 wouldn't help me much. I'd have to go to the D700, with the much larger price tag, to get significant improvement.

I have both a Mac Pro 4,1 and 1,1. I like them both, but I've done so much to upgrade the 1,1 it holds a special place for me. I upgraded the firmware and smc to 2,1. I upgraded the original dual cores to quad cores. I maxed the RAM and put in a Radeon 7950. I know I sunk too much money into it, but I'm attached to it. At any rate, I still use it daily for retouching, games and random stuff. It's held up amazingly well and I've never had any problems with it.

Stilling Using my Mac 1.1, I maxed out the Ram with 32GB. It does everything i need it to too. I will get the New Mac Pro 2015- or 2016, No need to rush, The Longer i wait the better the new Mac Pro plus I'm waiting on the Apple 4K Display.

Proud to still be rocking my 1,1. Upgraded the video card (twice - once for free from Apple after my X1900XT crapped out, they gave me an 8800GT). Then again to get some better performance I managed to get the 2GB variety of a 6870. New SSD, 10 Gigs of RAM, upgraded the CPU's to the X3565's. I'm still running 10.7.5 as I haven't had any reason to upgrade yet. The integration of reminders, separate app for notes, and iCloud keychain would all be nice, but I don't want to risk screwing around with a boot loader until I have an app that needs something newer.

Then again I have been looking at running Asteroid :D

I have a few partitions and was going to do bootcamp.

Do you use all 32GB? I'm winning a couple of sticks of RAM on eBay at the moment then I'l have 24GB!

Is that a mining app? Ive been looking at doing it but never really understand it?

i think that the 1,1 can be upgraded up to 64 Go Ram with 8 Go stick and up to 3,33 Ghz with 5350 xeon with bsel mod ! and has tutor shows that it can handle two sc titan for octane with the same render speed of a 5,1 ! So that machine can hold a couple of year!

Running Windows Server 2008 R2 on MacPro 2,1

I'm looking at putting 2 3ghz quad cores in mine what config you running? I also want to do mavericks but I'm going to get an SSD first

I have a Mac Pro (July 2007 model 1,1, Dual 5160Xeon) upgraded to 2,1, Dual 3 GHz 5365 Xeon, 16GB RAM, SSD 256GB, Areca SAS/SATA 6G card X1880ix, AMD HD5870 (from my second MacPro 2012 dual 5690- now running with a Nvidia GTX 780).
This machine is running excellent under Windows Server 2008 R2-64Bit in my office.
I can easily switch to OS X 10.7.5- 10.8.4 and 10.9.1 under the Windows selector (legacy boot). This machine is much better than my former Office PC with a Fujitsu-Siemens motherboard.

I don't get a bootscreen with it. When I first got my MP I was in the same spot wondering about boot screens but it's not all that bad.

If I ever need a boot screen to access the boot menu or something (which hasn't happened yet... thank god) my 7300GT is close by and can pop it in easy enough.

I recorded and mixed a rock album last year on a 1,1 (2x2.0Ghz) 12GB ram with only 7200 HDDs.
Have to say it was a struggle, processor in red most of the time!
But the machine has served me well since 2006.
When I do orchestral stuff I have to use an MBP and a PC as slaves and it is still a bit sluggish.
Been waiting to upgrade for a loooong time.

Looking forward to nMP and SSDs.

Still using a 1,1. Bought it new in April 2007 so it's given me nearly 7 years of solid service. It's been the best computer I've ever owned by far.

I use it every day for several hours a day as I'm self employed so it's given me reliable service for many years. Never went SSD and didn't upgrade the graphics card but have altered the drives a few times and added RAM every so often.

However, it's days are numbered as I've ordered a nMP which is *supposed* to be arriving some time this month. Not entirely sure what to do with the old 1,1. Can't bring myself to get rid of it - we've been through too much together :D

At one stage I was thinking of using it as a server, but I bought a Synology NAS instead so I guess it'll end up in the loft with the Amiga 4000.

Guess why I prefer having lots of internal PCIe slots.

... .

What CUDA cards have you got?

I have, in order of greater 3d rendering performance first, the following:
1) EVGA GTX 780 Ti Superclock (SC) ACX / 3Gigs (G),
2) EVGA GTX 690 / 4G,
3) EVGA GTX Titan SC / 6Gs,
4) EVGA GTX 590C /3Gs,
5) EVGA GTX 480 SC / 1.5Gs,
6) EVGA GTX 580 Classified (C) / 3Gs,
7) Galaxy 680 / 4Gs,
8) BFG Tech GTX 295 / 1.5Gs and
9) EVGA GT 640 / 4Gs.
I use the EVGA GT 640 / 4Gs for video output/as a 4G frame buffer and for interactivity when 3d scene building and scene tweaking.

All of the cards work great in my Mac Pro2,1s (and in my Mac Pro that I upgraded from a 4,1 to a 5,1), except the 780 Ti SC ACXs which use the GK110B chip and currently causes OpenCL (OCL) aware applications to crash in Mavericks. Also beware that more recent Titans use the GK110B chip. My Titans were purchased early on and have the GK100A chip which plays well with OCL in Mavericks. All of these CUDA cards together, in 19 systems, give me the rendering equivalent of over 60 reference design (RD) Titans or that of up to 600 single CPU systems with each using an E5-2687W V1. [ http://www.nvidia.com/content/tesla/pdf/NVIDIA-Tesla-Kepler-Family-Datasheet.pdf See footnote no. 2 - one Tesla K20/K40 =~ 10 E5-2687Ws; "GPUs from the GeForce line are usually higher clocked and render faster than the more expensive Quadro and Tesla GPUs. The GeForce GTX 780 and GTX Titan currently offer the best performance to price ratio, but any recent high end Nvidia card will offer great rendering performance with Octane." { http://render.otoy.com/faqs.php Click first query under "Hardware and Software"}]. Oh! And I can simultaneously render on the CPUs of those systems (the first four benches in my signature are for one of them) for additional performance since Octane Render doesn't task system CPUs but by just a tad. My MacPros play an important part of that picture because I prefer to do my 3d designs on them and interactive rendering is extremely thick and sweet icing on the cake. My MacPros are also used heavily in my audio/video work. So am I getting rid of them? or pushing them aside? - "Hell no!"

Still have mine

My 1,1 (2x dual-core 3.0GHz, 6GB RAM) has a 5770. The 1900XT crapped out in it during the warranty period but Apple sent me another X1900XT. Bought this machine to replace a serious lemon of a G5 DP machine, and it's been rock solid other than the video card issues. I've done a lot of stuff on this machine, but I mostly just use it as a plain old desktop and gaming machine now. I'm planning on a trashcan Mac Pro at some time in the next three years to replace this machine (then it can sit with my Centris 650, Q840AV, PM 7200, and Blueberry G3).

I was thinking of upgrading the video card, but I'm not sure that the price of a 7950 is worth it for two or three more years of use. I'm running Mavericks with the Tiamo boot.efi file.

I'm actually still very happy with my 2,1. Especially with Tiamo's Mavericks hack.
currently its has a 6870 sapphire card in it, which I actually want to upgrade for some better game performance.
Anyone know if its actually useful to upgrade since the PCIE-1 vs modern PCIE-3?
Would hate to put some extra cash into this machine without it having any benefit.

[edit]
Seems that the 7950 seems to be a nice one, anyone can tell me the performance on a 2,1?
