how was the install process? so far i downloaded the OS and kinda busy to baby sit this operation the next few days. any advice on running windows 10 on El crapitan would be much appreciated!

Does Windows 10 even run on El Cap? Boot camp is simple. The eGPU stuff on Bootcamp can be a bit of a PITA but once it works its fine.

I’ve mostly switched far as a main computer but still use the iPad and iPhone. iMac sits next to pc monitor. It’s been fairly hassle free, though I’ve yet to bother moving my pics over to pc yet. It’s also a learning curve but once you get past those then pretty smooth sailing. Somebody needs to tell me how to get rid of the messages on windows 10 log in window (already killed the ads for that browser). ;)

Oh and icloud app doesn’t like me. Need to uninstall it and restart from scratch with it but keep forgetting since I don’t have pics on there, or use mail (use the phone for it mostly) and most files have already been transferred as well that isn’t on iPad.

Try turning off the option in Preferences - Personalisation - Lock Screen "Get fun facts, tips and more form Windows" Lots of bits like this scattered across the settings, I just turn off all the "suggestion" options off and enjoy the peace.

There's a couple more you'll want to turn off in Preferences - System - Notification & action - "Show me the Windows Welcome Experience" & "Get tips and suggestions as you use Windows"

I have a dual boot system (10.12.6 Hackintosh + Win 10) and it works great. I also just picked up an XPS 15 (for 45% less than an identically spec'd MBP...). IMO, Win10 is quite good actually, and I used to be a long-term Apple fanboy. Once they moved to a glued-appliance business model with more and more walled-garden services, I moved on.

I prefer and rely heavily on Google services, so no issues there. There are certain things I even prefer in Windows. For instance, you can make Chrome "apps" using Settings/More/Create Shortcut. I have them set up for Android Messages, my favorite radio station player, Xfinity web player, etc. This isn't possible in MacOS Chrome. I like the Win10 notification system better. The Ubuntu framework is good enough for my minimal Linux needs.

There are several Win only apps I now have access to. My main cross-platform apps work fine - Lightroom, Photoshop, Dropbox, Office, Google Docs, Telegram, Whatsapp, etc. I can boot into either OS and have access to all of my data in the appropriate native file systems because it's all sync'd with Dropbox and Resilio.

I prefer MacOS and it's Unix structure overall, but the gap has narrowed considerably. The only thing I really miss in Win10 is the swiss army knife Preview app. It's so easy to edit/annotate PDFs, convert image formats, and do other quick and dirty editing in an easy workflow. Foxit Reader (free) covers most of my PDF needs, but a true Windows version of Preview would be great. My only other slight miss is the simplicity of Time Machine, but that's no biggy.

For PDFs, you could also try Skim.

So I sort of went the opposite direction from Macbook pros...not a Lenovo ThinkPad, not a Dell XPS, not a Razer Blade, and definitely not a Microsoft Surface/Book...I went with just about the highest power-to-price ratio in a thin and light laptop by getting this year's MSI GS63!

- Intel 8th gen. 8750 6-core CPU 2.2
- 16 GB ram
- Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB
- 256 GB m2 SSD (and pulled the additional 1TB spinner for storage and installed a 512 Samsung EVO) so two separate SSD drives in the lappy.
- Every Port I could ever need--dongle-free living is great. (Three USB 3.0 A, one USB 2.0 A, HDMI, Thunderbold 3, mini displayport, ethernet, card reader, separate headphone and mic ports)

The weight is 4.39 lbs and it is .7 inches thick which is quite thin and light for a kick ass rig that will play games on ultra settings on my 2560 X 1440 24 inch external display with no heat issues.
MSI's page specifies the weight as only 3.96 lbs - so it's even lighter than you think!

After using Mac's ever since I own a computer I decided to switch to Windows for my personnal laptop. I am kind of used to windows since I use it at work.

After my cMBP dying prematurely and finding no suitable Apple laptops for my needs I have decided to buy a Thinkpad T480s. The butterfly keyboard, the lack of connectivity and the prices I couldn't justified eventually drove me out.

So far I'm amazed by the keyboard and the matte screen on my Thinkpad. The only downsides are the speakers which are pretty bad even compared to my cMBP and Windows which is not as good as Mac os for my use. I'm also a little worried about viruses/malwares etc. but I guess it's just a false feeling since one is also vulnerable on mac os.

The only thing I couldn't find on Windows so far is a way to merge pdf documents which is super easy with Preview and an easy way to sync iPhone contacts to Windows without using iCloud. Does anyone know how to do those things?

For a couple of free solutions to merging PDF check out PDFsam, PDFMate or PDFShaper. They all have free and a premium version that is a little more full-featured.

I purchased a copy of Wondershare's PDF Element, that will also do that among some other features. Instructions for merging PDF's with PDF Element are here.

I do use iTunes for Windows to sync my phone contacts. There are probably other methods to do it, but it works for me.

As far as viruses/Malware, I run Windows Defender and Malwarebytes.

Thank you for that information :)

I'll give PDFsam a try. However for the iTunes sync from what I've seen it just backs up the contacts in iTunes but doesn't export them to the windows contact app like it does in Mac os.

I use the same combination as you for viruses and malwares I hope that will be enough!

The Surface Laptop 2 is on sale for $999 at Best Buy today. Still don’t like the glare of the screen or that soft material on the keyboard deck. The $300 would be awesome in the pocket but I just love how all my items work together.

If you had all Windows and Android stuff you could say the same thing.

I recently read Windows Defender that comes in Windows 10 is just as good and effective as any of the other virus software on the market. Many say there is no need for additional protection.

The way Preview handles PDF's on MacOS is really all that kept me from going to Windows full time. There really is no comparable product in my opinion. Preview just works and works really well for my needs.

PDF Element works well, but of course, to get many of the advanced features of PDF Element, you have to purchase it while Preview is a part of MacOS. PDF Element vs Preview

That was the problem I found. To get Windows to do what MacOS does right out of the box was going to cost more money. Many programs needed a subscription.

For me it was also the simplicity. There are several PDF programs that can do what Preview can do, but it takes several steps to do what a drag and drop or a delete key can do in one step in preview.

Microsoft Edge, most people forget, has a reasonable PDF viewer and is Windows Ink enabled for annotations and such.

That and Preview has its own shortcomings. I actually began using PDF Element on Mac before ever buying a Windows machine, due to needing the ability to digitally sign PDF's. But I *do* get that preview works great for the majority of people.

Anyways, anyone switched to PC? What's your experience so far? The Windows PC market is extremely ahead of the Mac right now (with all the Dell XPS, HP Spectre, Thinkpad X1 Carbon, Surface Book etc.)

If your applications only run on Macs your kinda stuck in Apple Land. Apples Battery life on all of its devices is industry leading. If that's a concern your also stuck in Apple Land. If your willing to be "Great but not as great" for in some cases a 50% discount then Windows laptops can and do great things.

Personally I have a Macbook Pro and a Windows 10 Desktop. I get the best of both worlds, however if I had to choose productivity I would still buy a Macbook laptop. The support I get from AppleCare during the life of the laptop is bar none. All the keyboard drama aside you have to get what feels right for you. I've owned Dell laptops before as well. The support was ok and better then hp's. They focus on chat vs actually talking to someone which depending on your problem can be a pain to deal with.

Bottom Line: The extra price you pay for Apple equipment is not for "cutting edge tech" in most cases. Its for integrated systems / features and world class support. If your not getting that from your Apple Purchases then by all means time for a change.

Was in the market for a new personal laptop. Considered MBP no-touch bar 2017 or the new MBA, but couldn't justify the high price tag with such a keyboard.

Just bought the HP Envy 13 for $800, such a gem. Stunning design, and the build feels extremely solid.

It does have some flaws, e.g. the fingerprint sensor doesn't work 100% of the time (I usually type the 4-number PIN code anyways, a much faster way to log in), the track pad is not as good (I prefer to use my mouse so it's not a big deal), the fan sometimes kick in for no reason, and there is no black/gray color (only silver and pale gold).

Other than that, I got 2 USB-A ports (which I appreciate a lot), a 54 Whr battery which usually lasts 10 hours+, and a keyboard that is extremely pleasant to type on (almost as good as the one on my Thinkpad work laptop). I use Excel a lot and thus having a good keyboard is extremely important to me.

I plan to keep this laptop for 2-3 years. Let's see if Apple will offer something worthy in the future, but I'm afraid they won't. Reverting the keyboard design means admitting defeat, and I'm sure Apple won't do that. And with how the company keeps pushing the "iPads can replace laptops" garbage, I'm quite certain Apple won't put too much effort into developing the Macbook lineup.

After two imac crashes from kp's, I finally bought a PC this year. I bought an Alienware 17 R5 laptop,
six core i7, 32gb ram, 512 ssd, gtx 1070 8gb video card.
It works great. The bios from Dell is set up to keep it running cool. Normally around 42c.
If I put it to task it will pop up to 72c, but rarely.
I'm not a Windows fan, but after 10 years of not using Windows, I'm finding my way around again.
Windows 10 seems pretty solid.
This week, I picked up an old 2012 Mac Pro, 6-core 3.33ghz cheese grater at the college surplus store.
It works good, is running Yosemite 10.10.5.
I loaded up Logic Pro X 10.2.4 and it runs great, so I'll stick with that and keep my head in the Mac
environment until Apple makes a machine that stops having T2 crashes and gets all the bugs out of their OSX.
I really liked the upgrade Logic Pro X to 10.3, but El Capitan is when I started having problems.
I'm going to load my Alienware windows box with Ableton Live 10 soon and see how it does for audio production.
Now that Apple has become so unreliable and over-priced, I think moving forward I'll stick with used Macs,
and will keep a Windows machine handy from now on. I'm enjoying a multi-platform environment.

Look into ThrottleStop, might prove to be fruitful;

Corona 300K Rays.JPG
Solid 3.9 GHz all the way, no excuses, no BS, never throttles, as in reducing CPU frequency as the cooling solution is matched to the CPU/GPU on ASUS ROG GL703GS. TBH Apple is actively killing it's pro community with it's latest hardware as it's just garbage that looks pretty...

Apparently the Mac Pro cMP might return late 2019 per MacRumors today. Those were fun days.
