I tried it, and returned it to get my 3GS back. The only thing I liked about was BBM and the awesome battery life. They keyboard was cramped and keys were small, and I just got bored with it after a while. If I HAD to have a BlackBerry though, it would definitely be the Bold 2/9700.

I hope Apple includes something similar to BBM for us iPhone users in the future.

Why would you want a bbm-like app for iPhone when you can use an IM client and talk to everyone, not just people who have one particular brand of phone?

There are some features in these new BBM like iPhone apps that are not available in an IM client. Yes these features may not be needed by the masses, but for business they are great. Since this is a 9700 thread topic I won't go into the details, but if you really want to know, you will check it out.

Well for example, I personally havent used a PC based IM for yeeears.. but the experience I get with BBM feels totally different to back in the days when I would chat on IM i.e MSN.

The friends and people I talk with today, don't have/use IM clients like AIM or MSN.... but they happily text away on BBM.

I also think for the most part, older people who have never used an IM client like Yahoo chat or MSN before, but have now acquired a Blackberry and BBM, its like a new cool experience for them.... its simple to get straight stuck in without any hoo ha. Its one of those things that just works.

I dunno, I just don't see the point of bbm. It's just one more way of sending messages - in addition to SMS, IM, and push email - except that it limits you to contacting a tiny subset of the population.

I'm quite at a loss to explain why people care about it, much less cite it as a killer feature. Personally, I have the icon hidden on my bb.

Ok fair enough it limits the people you talk to; to just BB users... but I dont really see that as a bad thing. It gives you the feeling of talking in your own private forum, amongst friends and family. and best of all its free and always on!

I think you've nailed it - that's what people like - the feeling of exclusivity. As for free, there are lots of free IM clients, and even if you pay $10 once for beejive or a few bucks for textfree unlimited, big deal. I mean we're talking about people who own high-end smartphones here. Always on - personally I don't like that, but again, SMS and push email are always on, and IM clients like beejive can be set that way.

Yep, tried it. I can't get used to the fact of having a keyboard compared to having an iPhone for so long. I'm actually faster with the iPhone... Now I just have to find a way to get another iPhone.

Anyone want a 1 day old unlocked Blackberry Bold 9700 for their iPhone? ;)

$700 iPhone 3GS Unlocked (32GB) - $500 Unlocked (9700) = $200

I agree with those who prefer the Bold 9700 for a phone - signal is much better, battery life is great, screen much better in terms of colour and definition and the web browser is faster, albeit not as good or easy to use. I have both - iPhone for music and browsing (although BB music player is fine and syncs with iTunes playlists), and Bold for email, messaging and phone.

If I could only have one, it would be an iPod and the BB.

thanks google search, this thread clearly mentions "update" form my query "9700 bb mac update" ..

I looked everywhere and couldn't find a solution, how can I upgrade BB 9700 software using the Mac desktop client, it claims there are no updates and the updates I found on RIM's site were only available in EXE ...

any help is appreciated ...

I considered the switch, but I am sticking with my 3GS. A lot of thr iPhone shortcomings can be change through jailbreaking or a new software update from Apple. The small screen, awful browsing and outdated OS makes me stay away from Blackberries. If you think the iPhone OS is outdated, then you should try the BB OS; you will probably think you are living in the 90s. The BB battery life and email is so much better than the iPhone's though.

i think the screen size is the worst part about the 9700. The screen on the iphone actually makes me want to take pictures. hahah. but something also attracts me to the bb. probably the notification light and the battery life (and kb).

and its weird, but i kinda like how the 9700 looks. the black and chrome looks pretty sleek.

Unfortunately, I thought it was really weak in surprising area - the keyboard. There were both a bold 9000 and a curve 8900 on display next to the 9700, and the 9700's keyboard was easily the hardest to use

+1. The keyboard is much smaller in size and cramped compared to the previous Bold 9000.

If the bold series had touch screens and a iPhone level music browser I would buy one in heartbeat. I despise the BB storm in every way. I used to own a curve 8310 ,and ended up literally smashing it against a wall after I got my iPhone 3G.

8310

Loved: Keyboard, Trackball were great but I felt it need a touchscreen.
Themes
Huge battery life, SD slot

Hated: Low quality display
Archaic OS
Even more Archaic web browser and music player
Copper accents on the design /Cheap plastic
Freezing, slow performance, glitchy controls.
Side headphone jack was very uncomfortable

Im not sure how many of those issue carry over to the bold, but I would seriously chose the iPhone any day over blackberry's current offerings.:apple::apple::apple:

I just switched from a 3GS and to the new Bold on AT&T and I actually really like it. Of course it can't do as much as the iPhone, and the browser isn't that good, but I love having chat rooms with my friends on BBM.

To fill my iPhone void, I will get an iPod Touch.

And when the new iPhone comes out, I will probably switch back to it if there is a new design and some new features. I'd also like to see them add a feature similar to BBM, so that you can have chat rooms with your friends who have iPhones.

What made you give up the 3GS for the 9700?
I'm just curious because lately whenever I go through threads lately I see talk of the 9700. Just would like to see what the hype is about, of people making the 'switch'.
