I restored my iPhone 3G last night, specifically to remove the jailbreak. Since 3G and the App Store, the only hack I'd been using was Winterboard, anyway. Jailbreaking's advantages have all but evaporated for me and I don't think it's worth missing out on updates like the up-coming 2.1.
I agree. I'm really going to miss WinterBoard, but after using 2.1 on my touch and comparing it with my iPhone 3G side by side (boot times, app launch times, etc) I have to say I'm really impressed - 2.1 fixes a lot of bugs, and has a much more responsive UI than 2.0.X. That alone is worth losing WinterBoard for (at least temporarily) in my opinion ... :)

I upgraded my itunes and I tried to restore my 1gen iphone back to it's original state. Everything looked normal as it uploaded the files. When it was complete, my iphone was stuck at the apple logo... Does anyone know how to fix this?

Okay, so to be perfectly clear here:

Using iTunes 8, we can no longer restore our phones with custom firmwares.

Is this a correct statement? All of the replies here are so confusing. I want to know if I can use pwnage to create a custom firmware, and restore my phone with it using iTunes 8.0. Is this possible? Yes or no.

Exactly, this is my question as well. No one seems to be able to provide an answer.

My iphone, the iphone that froze, was unlocked when I tried to restore it. My friend did the same thing with his iphone, 3G just jailbroken, and was fine.

Is your phone back to normal now or still frozen?

I'm also curious as to whether or not Quickpwn works. I'm assuming it does since it alters the phone, not the IPSW.

WTF? It's a yes or no question.

CAN I RESTORE MY IPHONE WITH A CUSTOM FIRMWARE USING ITUNES 8.0 OR DID APPLE CHANGE SOMETHING TO PREVENT THIS?

No, you cannot.

No, you cannot.

There's our answer.

Looks like Quickpwn, for the moment, is our best bet.

Thank God I have a macbook that I'm NOT upgrading to 8.0. I can always pwnagetool there (since i dont like quickpwn)

Looks like Pwnage Tool will be doing the restores from now on. This seems like a minor inconvenience for the dev team, honestly.

The best part about this discussion is that I had to restore tonight! What are the odds that we're talking about this and it happens? Pretty good with 2.0.2 I guess...

But it worked out fine restoring to a virgin 2.0.2 and then using Quickpwn, just as I suspected.

So you can't pwn your phone anymore with itunes 8?

Can you go back to itunes 7 if you already have 8?

I suggest that you DO NOT upgrade. I had to restore the phone on my friends laptop and now everything is fine.

More or less my opinion too. Pretty much the only apps I would miss are Winterboard & BossPrefs... Losing WB would be a huge loss for me though; I love customizing the dock, icons, etc.

Actually you can still use custom firmware. I tested this today with a PWNED 2.0.2 custom .ispw. When 2.1 comes out we will no longer be able to PWN until a new tool is released.

YOU CANNOT USE ITUNES TO PWN THE PHONE WITH 8.0!!!

Apple has patched it to detect a pwned IPSW and not accept it (the phone still will but itunes refuses to put it on it) so the dev team either has to patch it out which if you read their blog is what they plan to do or make pwnage do the restores (difficult, cuz it does firmware and everything)

I've heard that if it's already pwned, it works. Either way, they'll have patches out before too long. They already have one ready for the iPod Touch, and they're working on the iPhone. Just sit tight everybody!

I am just saying that it can't be affecting everyone if it worked for me in iTunes 8.

yes the problem isnt pwning 2.0.2 which works with 8.0 if u had it pwned before but u wont be able to pwnage it with 2.1 until the dev-team comes up with a new patch to "pwn" itunes

how do we know all this?

Are we saying iTunes 8 accepts a custom 2.02 firmware but wont accept a custom 2.1 firmware? How does anyone know that? 2.1 isnt out..

Has anyone actually tried to restore a custom 2.0X firmware under iTunes 8?

Im not worried about pwning 2.1, dev team will come up with pwnage tool that can pwn 2.1 soon. Just getting it on the iPhone seems like the issue.
