I own a Nexus 5. It is a very solid, stable and competent performer. The battery life does go up and down depending on the strength of your cell phone signal. This is not something you can directly control as the commands to raise or lower transmit strength come from the Radio Network Controllers on your carrier's network.

Is it better than an iphone? That is subjective..... that argument has been had thousands of times on this forum and it is really better to evaluate it yourself.

Two other people i know have Nexus 5 phones. They are both very happy with them.
