crash your car and see if it shows up...

LMAO.

I'm probably going to purchase this, but I was hoping to get some more feedback on it first.

I think eventually Google GPS will replace most other GPS apps on the iPhone, but I figure it's going to be a good solid year or so before they get to the same level of polish that other GPS manufacturers have attained.

Looks like Live Traffic is only working in the US now. I am in Guelph, Ontario and the closest traffic updates that I see are in NY (Buffalo area - 130km away) and MI (Detroit area - 300km away). Hopefully Canada is active soon, since this looks like a great add-on!

I live in Ottawa, and it's showing local traffic info for the 417.. note that Google Maps traffic only works in certain cities in Canada, so maybe that's the case for Navigon?

Not for those of us who don't want to be relying on a data connection and that is a large segment of people.

I have both. Overall, I prefer Navigon, but not by a wide margin. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

I went ahead and purchased Navigon last night and tried it out this morning. My initial impression of the app was very good. The user interface was very user friendly and worked extremely well. I really liked how it showed the next 2 turns in the lower left corner of the screen. This is a very useful feature.

It never really did tell me which lanes to be in though and it often told me to turn down streets that no longer existed. The maps for Navigon seem to be outdated which was a huge disappointment. I also have tomtom and must admit that I like it better so far. Tomtom actually does tell me which lane to be in and its maps are more current.

The traffic information Navigon did work very well. It correctly alerted me to potential traffic problems.

My wife & I share apps. and I put Navigon on her phone some time ago. It updated fine to 1.3. However, when I went to add traffic to her Navigon app. I got an error message that you have to purchase the app itself before you can purchase traffic. Before I updated her phone, I purchased traffic on my phone, then updated her phone to 1.3. Suggestions anyone, as it is now it won't even let me get traffic even if I wanted to pay for it on her phone.

TomTom maps do seem to be more up to date and accurate. What's odd about that is Navagon uses Navateq, an American company for their maps, while TomTom uses TeleAtlas, a European Company. By the way CoPilot uses MapSure for North America and their maps are outdated too.

I believe Google GPS caches the entire route, so unless you wildly go off in a different direction it will still get you from point A to point B.

However, you are right, searches, drastic route changes, etc, will not work without a data connection.

I would like confirmation that with the traffic update feature activated in navigon.....if you lose data connection/cell signal, the actual routing will still work. Just want to make sure that navigon isn't linking traffic updates to routing which then makes it dependent on a data signal.

hope the question makes sense

Would like that as well... Considering most highways have poor cell signal here, it would suck to lose trafic info every now and then

You have to have a data connection for the traffic features to work. It says that right on the Navigon app installer.

If Navigon works like every other traffic enabled GPS then it will just continue you on your current route if traffic data is no longer available.

You need to go into the app store on her phone, sign out of her personal account and then re-sign in under your account. Once you do that, launch Navigon and try again. That should do the trick.

Tried the live traffic thing last night going home from work and I have to say it is amazing! I usually don't take the closest freeway exit to my house because of traffic congestion and there's a local route that took me a couple tries to figure out the fastest way home. And guess what, Navigon guided me through that route last night and avoiding the heavy traffic! Overall I'm very impressed!

The only thing I can complain about Navigon is the battery consumption. I had a 100% as I left work and when I got home, it's down to 70% already on a 35 minute drive.

Got to invest in a car charger. Using the GPS chip, the screen being on, and the speaker your going to go through your battery fast.

Just tried out the traffic option on a very busy stretch of I35 in between Dallas and Denton TX. Worked very well, including showing details of exit number ranges of where the traffic was (even in both directions - North/South). Unfortunately there weren't any 'reroute suggestions' because where the traffic was is a pretty landlocked area without many side streets/alternative routes.

The maps must also have been updated, as a very new stretch of re-built/widened road that I needed to use was updated and showed the new speed limits.

I also noticed that the iPod interface has been refined (or maybe I didn't pay enough attention in v1.2 ;).

Well worth the $20 for me!

Has anyone dl the new update using there iPhone not there computer?

Yes. That's how I did mine last night. Downloaded the new version and then the in-app purchase. No connection to the PC was involved.

Tests have shown that you will get at most 2 or 2.5 hours of run time using any of the GPS apps.

Get a charger for your car(s) if you plan on using GPS. It will be very hard on the battery otherwise.

Tried that, didn't work. Uninstalled the app on her phone, reloaded it under my account, signed out, signed in under her account, still won't work. Keeps saying you have to purchase app in order to purchase traffic.

Worked AWESOME for me here in NY...took me on the quickest route, then had me exit the Parkway when it got congested and took local roads. It was the first use in traffic conditions, should be able to test it again tonight.

I'm confused about adding the traffic update to more than one iphone too. I installed the newest version of Navigon on my iphone and bought the traffic upgrade. Then I installed it on my wife's iphone (my iphone and hers are both authorized under my itunes account). I then made sure that she is logged in under my account on her phone in itunes. The new version runs fine on her phone, but when I go to the extras, I see the traffic update and it asks me if I want to purchase it. If I click on this, am I going to have to pay another 20 bucks or will there be another note saying that I've already purchased it and then can install it on her phone for free?

I emailed Navigon, there response was that yes you can put the app itself on up to 5 computers, but if you want traffic, you have to purchase the actual Navigon app for each computer. I've now emailed itunes support because I think this is a violation of the SLA.

This was Navigon's reply:

"Unfortunately is the application for the iPhone device related, that means actually you had to buy the application for your wife as well, that is the reason why it does not work, sorry for that."

That's what I suspected .... that in-app purchases go with the iphone and not the account. I talked to someone at Apple tech support and he really didn't know, but he said that I would have to contact Navigon and it's their thing, not Apple's. It's just confusing because others here said they got it to work on 2 iphones with one purchase.

I purchased on my iPhone first. Then I went into my wife's phone and 'purchased' the traffic in-app, at which point I was told I'd already purchased and that I could download for free.
