i hate to sound nostalgic before i even graduate, but everyone who can should consider themselves lucky they can use a computer for exams. until my second semester of second year I didn't type. My advice to anyone going into law school facing this situation would be to buy a MBP and a used laptop from someone graduating this year.

Examsoft isn't going to have additional system requirements and it would be worth the $2-300 it would take to buy a laptop just for exams.

Oh, to the people just starting...get ready.
To the people starting your second year, prepare to hate everything.
To the smart ones starting third year with all elective classes because you front-loaded your classes...get ready for an awesome time of doing nothing.

Regardless of how good their creds are, if the school forbids mac, vote with your wallets and switch to another educational institution! A degree from such a place is not worth the paper it is printed on anyway. If sufficient students are to do the same perhaps then they will realise the folly of adopting a "Windows only" policy on your customers and wake up from their f***ing ideas :)

YES! People can't be like sheep their whole lives and by a pc just becuase their friend or family member has one. THINK DIFFERENT!!!:D

I just finished my exam

I just returned home from my last final exam of law school, which I took on my MacBook Pro using Examsoft. Everything went smoothly and I think I can reccomend others lobby heavily to do the same at your school.

The only problem came when the MSFT screen window was launched by some combination of shortcut keys which I did inadvertantly.

Because of this, rebooting after the exam was a noisy proposition. I'm sure some people in the exam room were annoyed, but many peopel in law school are easily annoyed anyway.

I've got details posted now on my weblog.

Good luck to everyone who isn't finished with finals yet...there's a patio with cool beverages calling my name.

Where do you go to law school that you couldn't type until a year and a half ago, or was it a choice thing and I am misunderstanding you? I am jealous - my last exam (only one this semester) of law school is tonight. Then, I relax until graduation in two weeks.

Alywa, I emailed Exam 4 about that last year, I'll see if I can dig up the email. I think they passed the blame onto Apple for not releasing code that would be needed to allow an app to take over your computer. I'll see if I can dig up the email.

inlimbo, don't worry, I was surprised at how few people used computers for exams my first year. Almost everybody bluebooked. These last few years I've seen the shift. Now, there are very few that bluebook.

Edit: I may be wrong about exam 4. I am pretty sure that there was another set of emails that passed back and forth, but all I could find were my initial communications (I must have done the rest of my emailing back and forth through the school POP instead of Gmail). All I could find was their response to my complaint that we hd stopped supporting the VPC workaround for exam 4:
We were unaware of this policy detail, and can understand your eagerness for a Mac-native solution. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending how you're looking at it) the VPC workaround has been quite successful, so we have no present plans to go beyond that.

Site devoted to Macs in law school

Michael,

I'm a 1L at Santa Clara, and I've put together a site all about using a Mac in law school. It addresses the exam software issue and provides related information. I'm always looking for feedback, so please take a look and let me know what you think of the site.
