It sounds like installing SummerBoard may have been the source of my problems noted in the above post so this evening I will give it another go without installing it as otherwise the problems should be more widespread.

I uninstalled Summerboard and then the crashing apps and they still crashed when I reinstalled them. I didn't reinstall Summerboard. Do I need to resotre my phone and start over to get the apps working?

I just saw the below message on an iphonealley board and tried it. This seemed to do the trick, even with summerboard installed.

i figured it out

"i solved the problem. i forgot to install the BSD subsystem. its necessary to run the 3rd party apps. hope that helps!"

Thanks, tobefirst. I'll try uninstalling Summerboard and see if that solves the problem. I'll report back.

EDIT:
Looks like that was exactly the problem. Apps seem to run fine now without Summerboard. Too bad, really, because I love the themed look.

By the way, how do you rearrange the icon order? I haven't seen that yet.

Yeah, I'll be looking later for a way to have a desktop wallpaper instead of the black background. I hope there is a way other than Summerboard. Anyone know?

You can rearrange the icon order with rSBT, which is included inside of Customize, which you can find in the Installer.app if you don't have it already. I only have 11 icons (including the ones in the dock) on my phone right now...the rest are accessible via another application called "Dock" which I love.

Update: after uninstalling and reinstalling Summerboard several times, it seems to work consistently now, with no ill effects on other apps. I don't have BSD Subsystem installed either, so I don't think that has a bearing on it. Very strange.

i did it today and it worked perfectly!

make sure you install bsd subsystem and community sources to get more apps to work!

played with it. it seems choppy and slow compared to apptapp. why don't they release one i might do a restore. plus none of the apps i use are there.

i just installed it fine, checking it out now :)

shouldn't apollo im be there somewhere?

edit: being a dumbass, following procedure on apolloim's site

Did you try downloading the community source package? That opens it up to the whole shebang list of apps out there, instead of just the basic list it comes with.

And maybe it's just me and my lack of understanding of this, but I wouldn't call it a complete "jailbreak". From what I can tell, services.plist isn't modified to setup AFC2, so there is still no filesystem access, and so far I can't figure out a way to get that done (recursive error....need to modify Services.plist to access file system, need access to file system to modify Services.plist) without basically restoring and using another jailbreak method.

update.....figured it out. Guess I typed some stuff wrong when trying to do the login, but I got in and modified the Services.plist file via SSH. Now everything works like a snap.

Anyone having luck with Ringtones SSH'd to the phone after jailbreaking this way? I did the appsnapp last night, installed the BSD subsystem, openSSH, all that. This morning I tried to SSH ringtones and NES roms on, and the roms went on ok, but the ringtones (I transferred them onto the phone as .mp3s) don't show up in the sound settings. Will they not work as .mp3s in 1.1.1? I checked again using my FTP program, and they're in the Library/Ringtones folder, but they just don't show up on the phone.

Ringtones on 1.1.1 have changed a bit.
There's two ways of getting ringtones working on 1.1.1:
The hard way, using this guide:
http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/Free_Custom_Ringtones_on_iPhone_1.1.1

Or the semi-easy way, using SendSong. Make sure you download SendSong v0.19e or higher.
Have your m4a ringtone songs synced into your phone via iTunes.
Once in SendSong, find the ringtone, tap it, and "Add to Ringtones". After each time you sync with iTunes, you'll have to go into SendSong, tap a song, and perform the post-sync restore. Reason for that is explained in the above linked guide.

I did it lastnight, went very, very smooth.

At first I couldn't get access via SSH, but that's because I forgot to flush my user folder of the know host.. so simply did a cmd + shift + g key combo and .ssh and deleted the known host file and all is working smooth...

So far I haven't had anything crash (knock on wood)

After an afternoon of playing with the various 3rd-party apps, I decided to wipe the slate clean and do a Restore. There's nothing there except Summerboard that I really want, and it's simply not worth putting up with the glitchiness just to get a nice wallpaper on my home screen.

My phone is running nice and fast again, with no issues. I now see the logic in waiting for Apple-approved, Apple-tested apps to arrive.

Your mileage may vary, of course, and folks with a more experimental nature should continue to play around with the hacks and 3rd-party apps in the meantime. It just isn't for me.

Yeah, count me as another that did the AppSnapp install, but found it just too buggy and slow to actually use. I'm in the process of restoring right now.

Safari would crash nearly every time I had it open, and nearly every app at some point would crash on me. Also, the overall UI just seemed slow and not snappy at all. The instability and slowness just weren't worth having MobileRSS, ApolloIM, and a few token apps.

Hopefully, when Apple releases the SDK for 3rd party apps, it's not nearly as buggy as these releases are.

Having hacked my iPhone at every development (terminal, ijailbreak) sought the cleanliness of this install. Everything went off without a hitch until I went to play the iPod, no sound!

Will let you know after a restore.

just installed. Had to do it twice since I didn't know what was going on. For future users after you hit install, it will exit back to the springboard page and look like you just exited safari, but give it a few minutes to do its thing.

i think i'll hold off on this....at least til i'm beside my computer at home....just in case

I would. I've tried it twice and both times my iPhone became sluggish and unresponsive. The Installer app doesn't seem very stable either.

Frankly, I miss the first iteration which worked really well.

Oh Apple. *sigh*

Well... I did it. It works pretty well. I get paid tomorrow so I'll donate to AppTapp then.

Not too shabby. Getting Cyberduck to work was pretty frustrating.

For those who want to install NES Emu and ROMs(that they own) You need to install the Terminal from AppTapp and type "passwd" to change the password of the root.

For those who haven't gotten that far, "dottie" or "alpine" seems to work as passwords.

I got Zelda, installed it, amazingly it works beautifully. The only problem is that the "Select" button is so close to the "D" pad that it pauses uncontrollably! I probably have to work on my left thumb control too.

The Navizon app... it works, but is a mile off. Literally. A mile away from where I actually am. I'll go to the Navizon later to see if there are any tweaks.

I have to admit this makes the $400 purchase that much better. The only thing that's missing is a vagina.:p

ok guys i cant get a straight answer anywhere... i have a unlocked iPhone im using with T-Mobile with AppSnapp can i upgraded it to 1.1 and not brick my phone or is this not capable yet?

it will brick your phone if you do this. don't upgrade to 1.1.1 until you viriginized your phone.

appsnapp vs ijailbreak

does appsnapp have any features ijailbreak doesn't have... i dont want to re-format my ipod...

i know it patches up the tiff exploit but there already is a patch in installer.

Also, will anything bad happen if i patch the tiff exploit?
