When you double click on the calendar, iCal thinks you're trying to add to this calendar, which you don't have right to. Select the calendar (color) you actually want to add it to, then add away. :)

Which happens to be one of my peeves with iCal. I want to be able to edit locally, just on my viewing on my computer, events in calendars that I subscribe to. For instance, I am subscribed to the holiday calendar, and I want to be able to delete my viewing of holidays like Grandparents Day. It clutters up my schedule and so I have to deselect viewing the whole holiday calendar just to get it off my schedule and then I have to keep it off for a whole week, after which I don't remember to reselect it and thus get surprised by the next important holiday because it didn't show up in my schedule. Arg.

I use it a lot actually, and I mostly like it. It's turning out to be very useful for my upcoming trip to Europe. I've put in all my flight dates, reservation numbers, phone numbers, etc and will sync it with my iPod so that I have a mini organizer along with printouts. Let's just hope it doesn't go buggy on me as I won't be bringing my PB.

iCal is very good at many things, but is also terrible in some major ways. There are 2 situations where I would encourage a person to not start using iCal. One is if you imagine ever using it to do much more than you currently use it for because it would suck to start to rely on it and then find out certain features are missing or poorly implemented. And second is if you are beginning to use it now and are just putting up with certain bugs and lack of features thinking it will surely improve. Because there has not been a significant update to in 3 years and seems to be apple's red headed step child. But there are plenty of people out there that are mostly satisfied with it as well. So just be forewarned.

Let me un-arg you.

1. Subscribe to the Holidays Calendar
2. Export the Holidays Calendar to a file on your desktop.
3. Select your calendar (color) or create a new one.
4. Import the file on your desktop.

Now you own and can edit all of it. Granted, you won't get updates, but how often do holidays change?

Or, of course, you could prompt someone to run a published holidays calendar that has only the most useful (commonly needed) holidays. :)

HTH!
