I find the picture quality on ATV3 to be excellent. However, the video is not always smooth.

I have also use MLB.TV on my iMac and the video looks really good too. I really like some the extra features online, like highlights of other games, pitch tracker, picture-in-picture, etc.

Happy with MLB.TV

You can get the event timeline on ATV3, can't remember how I did it, I think I pushed down on the remote, and the wording on the time bar changes from time to event, to runs scored, etc... then when chapter skipping it would go to the event, run scored, inning was the other one I think.

I am not sure if this is the same as on the ATV2 app (at least prior to the 5.1 upgrade but...)

As for quality I find it depends on the feed.

ESPN national feeds are always nice, though I think you have to be out of US to get them (Im in Canada) because of the blackout restrictions.

In terms of streaming services, MLB is probably the best. Then NHL and NBA is the worst.

If only NFL Gamepass came to AppleTV natively (I can use the ipad app and airplay to it), though again, this is something that is only available outside US because of TV rights/blackout restrictions.

Here's the article from Macworld that mentions forthcoming enhancements to the MLB.tv interface on the Apple TV:

If you watch MLB.TV live streaming through your Apple TV, get ready for some changes as well. Gould says MLB.com is planning some interface enhancements, though it’s not releasing any details about its plans right now.

This came out way back on February 28 though, and I don't think I've noticed anything different from last season, in regard to the interface.

You're definitely right. A day or two after I posted about the event timeline, I figured it out on the ATV. Pretty cool! Still works a tiny bit better on the PS3, but at least it's there.

Looks a lot better than last year. On the MLB site it states you need 3000 kbps download for HD video. Also it is true 720p. Read this article from 2009:

http://blog.streamingmedia.com/the_business_of_online_vi/2009/03/mlbs-hd-video-using-3mb-stream-h264-full-720p-at-1280x720.html

Also on the Roku forum:

I have NexDef installed and I haven't got a 720p stream yet this season. The quality setting in the browser shows full bars and the top slider is marked to NexDef, but the stream is only 540p. I have a 20 mbps connection so I don't know why I wouldn't be getting the 720p stream if it was available.

Question, is your computer monitor HD capable? If not, it will not stream in 720p, no matter what NexDef shows. What is the resolution you have set on your monitor? If you don't have it set properly, you will not stream 720p or 1080p either. NexDef on my imac shows 720p when I stream. What you see on your computer is not always what you will see on the ATV.

Ya, I have a 50" 1080p tv with the ati graphics card outputting 1920x1080. Still don't get a 720p stream.

Try this on your computer with MLB running. Click the little HD icon next to video quality, uncheck detect and recommend, and manually click on the slider bar until all the bars turn green. Also make sure the little toggle is not set to standard, but nexdef when you click on the HD icon.
