Hi

Just purchased an IPP 12.9. Currently using it with the ASK. When at home and not needing the keyboard, I was wondering about the idea of using it naked? Anyone using their IPP naked at home?

By naked I mean without keyboard, case or Smart Cover.

I considered it as I didn't want to weigh it down since it's not exactly a feather (for a tablet). But, no. I put a back case on it and a glass screen protector as always.

I'm not afraid of scratches per se -- the back WILL get scratched, esp. the Apple logo, if you don't put a back case on it. The glass might get micro scratches, esp if you clean it with a regular or paper towel. But I don't buy my iPads to have and hold until death to us part. In effect I "lease" my iPads to myself as I sell mine after a year or so and to get top dollar they need to be super clean. So the case and protector are required.

I do on occasion, but I have found it better to have a Smart Cover in addition to the Smart Keyboard. I have only a thin clear skin on the back to protect from scratches and improve grip, so I like the light and thin feel. I've gotten into the habit of using the smart cover in the house and the ASK when out and about. That seems to work well.

If it weren't for the camera bump, I would put a Best Skins Ever on the back and the ASK on the front and not worry about anything else, but I just can't bring myself to use the iPad flat on the table while that camera bump slides around and gets all scratched up. Same with my iPhone.

I use the ipad ALL THE TIME naked, I mean yes I use the ASK as well but when im taking notes or using it as a tablet I use it naked. Less weight and I am very careful with my devices. Also it looks awesome naked.

I had a case for my Air and it worked well, but it weighed it down. I got a 10.5, and use it exclusively naked (in the shower ;P), as the case just made it so much heavier even though it was a slim case.

I’m going to make my own leather sleeve which I’ll keep it in when I’m not using it for awhile or away from home. Got everything for it, just need to make it.

I have an ASK and a back cover. I always leave the back cover on and only use the ASK as a cover when out of the house. When home I only use the ASK as a dock to type with.

I went from all covered up (silicon apple case, Zagg screen protector and ASK) to just an ASK.
Both on my 12.9 (1st gen) and 10.5.
The reasons are simple.
I write a lot, both on my 12.9 and on my 10.5 Having a glass screen protector makes it slippery as a wet tiled floor. It makes my writing even less readable, even for the Nebo app, and makes for a more cramped writing. So out went the screen protector.
I had the silicon case on my 12.9 and 9.7 but it makes it a bit sticky when I want to stow them both in my Goruck GR1 laptop compartment and even more so when I want to get one out. Then I also got the Yohann iPad stand, which I really like a lot, but the first version was only usable without case. So of went the case.
So now I only use the iPP’s with ASK, but when I want to read a lot I click the ASK off because it’s more easy to hold and lighter without.
When transporting them both I put the ASK against the AKS and have the aluminium back outwards. It then slides easily in any laptop compartment.

I do clean the “suede” side of my keyboards a lot as that touches desks/tables/what ever I’m putting my iPad on to prevent grains of sand scratching my screen. But so far it goes really well. My 12.9 is now about a year naked and has no scratch, the 10.5 obviously has had much less time being naked but it also is still in pristine condition.

Only worry I have is that it drops and might damage. But then again I have apple care + so it’s a financially limited risk.

I prefer to use my iOS devices with no case. They’ve actually been getting better imo because my iPhone 6s I bought at launch doesn’t have a visible scratch on it and I use it everyday, out and about, at the gym, in the car where it falls on occasion to the floorboard. It looks great.

The iPad Pro seems to have the same type of aluminum back, which I’m glad, because I’m mainly going to be using a Smart Cover (not keyboard) on this. Maybe a sleeve case when traveling with it a bit more.

At the end of your post this morning, you talk about how you carry the ASK and your iPad when out. You mention about and aluminum side and something called AKS. Could you or someone else who understands, explain. I am confused.

Thanks.

Sorry, typo.
I have a 10.5 with ASK and a 12.9 with ASK. When I pack them both, I make a ASK-sandwich :) with the ASK’s against each other and the aluminium iPad backs to the outsides.
This way it slides easily in the (not overly thick) laptop compartment of my Goruck GR1 backpack.
Hopes this makes it more clear.
