I have been doing so for about 3 weeks, but i just can't do it anymore. A case is due today.
As for the keyboard, i'd rather use a real magic keyboard via BT - but in honesty id never do that - i'd use my Mac.

Other than phones I've never seen the need for a case. If you have pets or small children then screen protection (such as the keyboard) is probably a good idea. The screen replacement fee for a 12.9" iPad is not cheap.

Screen replacement for the 12,9 is so expensive that it I wouldn’t dare to buy it without AC+.
And it’s just 4 components: logic board, screen, battery and back-casing.

I have the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, hope I'm allowed to say something too?

I'm currently using mine without any case or cover, but that's because I have yet to buy a Smart Cover later this week. To be honest, I just hate walking around with the iPad (or any other Apple device) without 'protection'. The back is getting filled with fingerprints, there's the potential of scratching anything etcetera. I hate it. Not using at least a Smart Cover on my iPad feels almost like holding a piece of very fragile glass that at every step has the chance of breaking. :p

It sounds a bit exaggerated, I know. But I just like to keep my Apple devices as clean and scratch-free as possible. I haven't managed to keep that up with my MacBook Pro of less than 1,5 year old unfortunately. Already got this scratch at the bottom. :(

So yeah, I'm not taking any risk here. xD

I used it naked since I was waiting for my dbrand to ship ... one week before it came ... I accidentally dropped my iPad in the garage. It was a little less than waist height, with the screen facing up so there are some scuff marks on the back... but the skin covers it all.

The skin was originally supposed to ship July 5-ish, but got super delayed for whatever reason.

You can use it naked but be aware of shrinkage when it gets cold.

Joking aside the back will get scratched up from sliding around on surfaces if you have no protection. Just from having it sit on the countertops will scratch it.

I can’t speak for the 12.9 since I’ve only had it for a week now, but my iPad Air 2 has been used naked for 2 yrs and 9 mos and it has almost no scratches on the back. If you angle it in just the right light, you can barely see 2 micro-scrathes. Otherwise, at first glance, it looks fine.

Now granted, every user is going to be different. But I always set my iPad down gently, if I think there is debris where I’m setting it down I give a quick wipe of the surface with my hand, and I don’t use it on abrasive surfaces like concrete. But otherwise, I just use it lik the tool it is and have never used protection and it is rocking along just fine.

Again, my approach may not be suitable for others, but I just use Apple devices as Apple intended (while exercising reasonable care) and by doing so, I enjoy the device’s natural aesthetics and I don’t add any weight or bulk from cases. I like it this way and have never encountered any problems.

I use it with ASK and would have loved to have an Apple silicon case for the back, but don't have that option with the 2nd gen. I bump it against a wall or bookcase occasionally, but am overall overly cautious and therefore don't worry too much. I was worried about the camera, but my phone's camera has come into contact with stuff over time with no issues, so I feel okay with it.

I'm fairly careful as well and really don't like how bulky devices get with big cases. A slim case that protects from scratches and makes it a bit easier to grip comes is what I try and use.

I think the use of a bulky case or thicker a case for an iPad really takes away from the appeal of the iPad physically. I understand that some might need the added protection layers depending on what field they are working in, but the thinner case for me still allows me to enjoy the thin profile the iPad and its overall light weight.

Mine is naked now apart from the ASK - I had/have the silicon back cover, however it's had pieces start chipping off of it so I've taken it off and haven't put it back on in some time now
