Last year I bought the 12.9 inch iPad Pro and I love it but for some things and depending on when/how I’m using it, it can be just over sized and heavy.

Does anyone with this model also have a iPad mini for when your just using your iPad at night, etc or do you just use your phone?

On the fence of buying a mini to supplement the Pro.

I probably said this already in the thread that sparksd posted the link to, but yes, got me a 12.9 and a Mini and I need both!
- 12.9 for personal laptop duties, portrait pdf reading, portable drawing, and portable external monitor with my work MacBook.
- iPad Mini for at home reading, casual browsing/videos, quick productivity, messaging, and phone calls—basically my super phablet at home.

12.9 is the bare minimum size for what I use it for. I might even want bigger. And I never liked holding iPads bigger than the Mini for longer than a few minutes. iPad Mini with a pop socket I can hold with one hand comfortably pretty much indefinitely.

I have both the 12.9 and 11. The 12.9 I use to stream while on the treadmill and for most of my personal day to day needs. The 11 I use for travel and work needs, taking notes, etc. Love them both!

Having two 12.9's makes more sense than having a 12.9 and a mini.

Not for me.

I once had 4x 12.9” iPads in rotation (my old 2017, 2018 refurb, 2020 open-box, 2021) while evaluating which I should keep amongst the 2018-2021 models. I’ve never really needed to use 2x 12.9” iPads at the same time nor have I needed to swap between them whilst charging the other since it’s often just plugged in at the desk.

I have the 12.9 iPad Pro (2018) and the iPad Mini 5.
Same here. The 12.9 is mostly for desktop use and reading PDFs, the mini is for use around the house, easy to hold with one hand, for travelling and in bed. The mini fits in coat pockets and in a small bike bag I have. It gets more use than the 12.9 due to its versatility and mobility. If I could only keep one iPad, I would choose the mini. In fact, for a number of years I only owned a mini (mini 4 and 3 before the 5). I also have a full PC desktop setup though.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding here, but why would it make sense to have two of the exact same size iPads?

I could understand wanting two different sized iPads since different sizes serve different purposes.

But why two that are exactly the same?

Well, I’ve almost always had two of the medium-sized iPads (kept my old iPads after upgrading). I use iPads a lot for marathon reading sessions and swap between devices when one needs charging.

I did something similar back when I was using iPhones for reading. Kept my old OG iPhone for night time reading while I used the 3GS during the day. After upgrading to the iPhone 4, I couldn’t stand jaggies/blur on non-retina displays so I also picked up an iPod touch 4th gen for swapping.

Several reasons. You could keep one as backup and store it in your closet. Or carry both around with you and you have double the battery life since you can switch back and fourth between the two. Or keep one strictly for the washroom. Or one for home use and the other for office use.

For about a year I had both a 12.9 IPP and an 11" IPP. The 12.9 stayed on my desk as a 2nd laptop and very rarely did I ever take it anywhere. I sold it and bought a 13" M1 MBP. The 11" is still my main take it with me device if I am going out for coffee, etc.

A USD$1100 device (base 12.9) stored in a closet that may never be used seems unwise. Unless one uses it for work and in the event that the primary device dies and a replacement cannot be purchased in a timely manner and no other device in ownership can temporarily assume its duties—but seems unlikely. If you want to double battery life, a battery pack is a much smarter purchase. Washroom iPad lol, I suppose. The last reason makes the most sense to me, if one uses the iPad in both locations heavily enough and transporting one back and forth is a big hassle.
