I guess I'm seriously confused at this point. Will leave it to you guys. I mean, generally speaking, two backups in the field are good enough. One on the iPad and one on the wifi drive. I understand what you're saying, the camera SD is a third backup.

BUT .. so wait up @MrMister111 your wireless drive doesn't have it's own spinner inside? You have to actually load in a separate MicroSD card? Not sure how much a 128GB costs these days but I think you may be better off getting a RavPower (39.99) and a 1TB portable (39.99). 80 bucks gets you 1TB vs 128GB and it does a whole lot more … powerbank, wireless extender/router etc.

Yes the wireless drive doesn't have internal memory, just a microSD slot.

So the plan was take pics on Digi Cam, remove microSD, put in wireless drive, copy to iPad, back in Digi Cam.

This means that I have pics and vids on iPad and microSD as backups. Can also view on a nice big screen rather than small 3" camera screen.

Reason thinking of a 128Gb was to stop swapping, maybe getting a new Digi Cam with 4K so more memory needed, and maybe try he 128Gb might not get full so I wouldn't have to format it and still have the 2 backups. They are about £30 at mo

Now I get it. SO it's not really a wireless drive. Sounds like the RavPower actually just without a HD connected. In that case, yes, you need to keep the SD to have two backups. Can you connect an external portable HD to this device you're using?

Ha ha it is confusing isn't it! No it's just a microSD slot is all. It has no internal memory, but it has a USB on the end as with a microSD in it can act as a normal USB flash drive.

It's this one for ref...

Another thing I wondered on was if copying to the iPad will it keep all the exif and GPS data along with it?

And another thing is there a way to import the pics from FB app to the photos app on the iPad? I knows the videos won't as they are *.mts but the pics are compatible as jpeg?

Is it so slow copying over.... Testing again and really really slow.... Not sure if that's the did if the microSD although it is a class 10

Interesting. Never even heard of something like that before. Cool gadget. And now I understand the workflow.

Honestly, if you can swing the 60 or 70 bucks needed, a RavPower FileHub with an external (512 MB externals are so cheap these days. Even the 1TBs can be had for 30 bucks or so) is such an elegant solution. Solves all your needs.

I'll look into them, don't mind buying though, but this is so small, and only used very sparely, and when it is I'll have my iPad with me.

Just copied over about 3Gb worth and roll 1/2hr though. Very slow.

Yes, that's why I like the FileHub - it's only $40, you can use any USB storage with it, and it has that other functionality that has proved quite useful.

I'm wondering now, sorry to keep going on this! If a lightning to SD adapter, that plugs directly into the iPad would do the same?

I know own the Apple one won't as it would only see the pics and not the video. But maybe of these adapters with an app could? Would be faster copy, and smaller again?

I bought a USB SanDisk lighting drive which is good but only for extending the iPad memory, or putting some movies etc on, but not too copy from a SD card into the iPad.

I only use the official Lightning to SD adapter and know there are limitations such as folder structure etc. I think mts files will be a no no as well. An unofficial adapter would need it’s own app to get access to such files so not sure if there are any out there.

I have a couple of different Lightning to uSD adapters that do this with their own apps but the knockoff SD adapters other than the official Apple one seem to work the same as the Apple device (files under DCIM folder, etc).

Nice one. Do you have a link to any? Sony cameras can be a pain for video content.

Here's a review I did on one:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/review-smartq-c620-mfi-lightning-microsd-card-reader.2100810/

I've actually used a uSD card in an SD adapter in my DSLR so that I can use this reader to review and cull RAW images using my iPad - can't do that with the Apple SD reader.

I also got this one:

https://www.adamelements.com/www/iklips/iKlips_mireader.html

Works great for streaming videos from an inserted card while being able to charge at the same time (oddly, the device accepts a micro USB charge cable). Also good for documents (Word , Excel) and photos (jpeg, RAW). One big downside - if you try to copy multiple files from the card to your iPad, only one file is copied (the first one selected). I don't really care as I use it for streaming movies stored on a 256GB uSD card while also charging but for your application it may be a dealbreaker.

They smartQ one isn't available in UK. Loads of others, just seems very hit and miss on the app being any good, not crashing, kept updated according to the reviews.

Do you think I'll see any better transfer speeds over my wireless stuck currently with one of those these USB types?

Suppose there's a few for £10 could take a chance.

It's really a hit or miss thing - I tried a couple of devices (Leef, Meenova, Geekgo) which all had problems of one kind or another and ended up returning them for refunds. Speedwise, they tend to be around USB 2 speeds, unlike the Apple SD card reader which is USB 3.

Not sure on Wireless stick speeds compared. Think you're right so many brands, devices etc. I have the Sandisk iXpand, works well, didn't think when bought it about the camera though! See Leef do any older version of their Leef ibridge which has a microSD slot, or the iAccess 3, but are expensive compared to these others....mmmm...

Leef was really painful. I had several issues and went through three exchanges of them. I sent debug files to their developers and tried Beta firmware finally before giving up after about 4 months of effort (I'm a retired S/W Systems/Architecture engineer so I had time & expertise to try and help working through it).

Bought a generic card (microSD) re easier that has lightning, USB, micro, USB-C on in a cross shape.

Uses the iUSB Pro app, I thought it would be able to use any of these apps, iDiskk, powerreader etc but only the iUSB Pro app can read it, not sure why.

Anyway it opened up my cameras microSD in the app, copied over and was much faster than the wireless drive. Speeds reported in the iUSB app says around 6Mb/s to 11Mb/s, not sure how accurate or if this is good?

So think this is a better way now as long as the iUSB Pro app works in the future.

Thanks

With most of these devices only the single associated app works with the particular device - they all seem to have unique software interfaces/handshakes. Glad you got something that works for you.

Do you have a link?

Wish they didn't, I expected other apps to work, should maybe have looked into that more, and maybe picked the best app rating. Although this iUSB Pro works fine really, just doesn't get very good rating in app store.

Thanks

For me, the biggest problem was finding one device that (a) was able to stream mp4 video > 4GB and (b) supported viewing RAW photo images on the card. Several devices did one but not the other. The iKlips device does both well and also supports simultaneous iPad charging (but through a micro USB interface) but it will only copy one file at a time. I'd give it a positive review because it does (a) and (b) and I don't care about the copy issue - but someone else may only give it 1 star because of that issue. It seems with these devices you have know exactly what you need it to do and be able to live with its faults. What a pain, though.

I'll have to check a video file to be honest never tried yet. One of the .mts AVCHD videos from the camera microSD was 2.1Gb, not sure it goes over 4Gb. I could try and find a movie to test? Would it not depend on the format of the SD as well?

Just testing on my iPhone at moment, but it's a little clunky to view a file. There is a share/export but it wants to "copy to" not just stream to like the wireless drive did. Would just prefer a stream to VLC to watch a video from it.

The 4GB issue was not related to the format of the card or how the mp4 was created. The files were copied to the cards just fine and played just fine from the card on my Windows & Android devices. First ran into this problem with the Meenova reader and their engineers had no explanation other than the problem seemed to be in a 3rd party app library they were using and they had no control over it. One of the other readers I tried had the same issue. Also, attempts to copy the files to the iPad also failed. This all worked with a different reader but that reader couldn't handle RAW images ...
