Same issue here. I thought I was missing something but from the looks of it, no. Will have to check my Note to see if it behaves in the same way
It's still a problem. A common issue with me is when I pair my Amazon Echo with my iPhone. Then I switch my iPhone to Airpods and leave my apartment to check mail / etc.

When I return to the area of near my apartment , my iPhone audio will switch back to the Echo before I even get inside. I'll pull my iPhone out of my pocket, unlock it, and switch it back to my airpods.then unlock the door and go inside.

it would be worse if I had more BT speakers at home but luckily I don't.

A rule such as "don't switch if you're already connected to a BT headset device" would fix this issue.
 
Increasingly annoyed by this. It's the auto-routing rather than the auto-connecting that gets me. And it's absolutely fine that auto-route is the default behaviour, but please, Apple, add an option to make it a manual process and to stick to whatever output device we've selected until we manually select another.
