I agree with you there. I just hate getting my hopes up. I really think that the Apple TV has the most potential out of all of Apple's products. I'm just tired of Apple not giving it due attention.

Or at least that is my perception. For all I know, Apple could be hard at work on this product to bring it beyond the hobby that it currently is. An app store would really start to show that they are ready to get serious about the Apple TV. My guess though is that before an app store, we will see the next generation of Apple TV with more built in storage (more than the current 8 gb of flash) to be able to handle some of the larger apps that would inevitably come with the opening of the store.

Till ATV2, ATV had been a hobby - not so now that ATV2 is using iOS. One has to listen to how Steve Jobs used "hobby" in introducing the ATV2 to realize that iOS is offering a new direction for ATV.

It may end up being the chicken vs the egg thing.... ATV2 is selling well - but maybe not enough for it's own App Store. But without an App Store the ATV2 may not sell in the numbers to make an App Store work.

I would not mind some screen savers (fireplace, and 3D photo savers); some games (with a touch pad controller like the Magic Pad but for the lap/hand - for those that don't own iPhones, iPads or iPod Touches).

Ask any grizzled veterans from the ATV1 days here: don't hold your breath. ATV has always been at the bottom of the list for Apple...and will continue to do so. Expect MODEST updates over the next few years with little to no new features. Enjoy what you have now and hope for the hacker scene to really open it up.

An apple app store simply is not going to happen any time soon...

As an old ATV1 veteran, I agree you should always make your purchase decision based upon a devices' current capabilities and not on possible future features. However, I disagree with your opinion on the future of ATV2. There will be some expansion, probably an app store. There are rumors aplenty. Just today evidence of a gaming controller was found in the system code, and a few months back DirecTV accidentally spilled the beans in a survey when they asked its customers if they knew that the NFL Sunday Ticket games could be viewed on other TV connected boxes including AppleTV -- Not, if it should be, but whether they knew it could be. It seems evident that plans are a foot, and they'll probably materialize before next football season.

Still, do not make plans on these speculative apps. Until the store is opened, plans could change.
